Thought I was going crazy but about 2 weeks ago I noticed the fan was running quite a bit (noticed is a couple of times). Bike is running good (7,500mi), oil levels etc are good. Thought maybe the 4inch lights were interfering with the air flow. Removed the lights and light bar. I still get the same problem. I commute to work on back roads with minimal traffic so I have a fairly controlled environment. I have done a few trips now and am pretty sure the fan is running all the time once the engine gets up to temp. I have a 38 mile trip one way, only a hand full of stop signs/lights on which I hardly have to sit. In general, I ride at a consistent speed between 50-70 running in 3/4 gear keeping the rpms around 3K. This morning the temp was about 59 when I left. About 15 minutes into the trip the fan kicks on... At every stop or slow down I can hear the fan..of course it is difficult to hear at speed, but you can occasionally hear.. Given the conditions and the ride.. pretty steady speed on good strechs of road (ride 6-8 miles without stopping or slowing). I am certain the fan is running much more that is used to and I'm 'pretty' sure that it runs all the time. I have a service appt Sunday for tires and side stand.. and wanted them to look into this and of course would appreciate any input/information anyone has (just in case). My initial thought is that the heat sensor on the head may be bad?? Thoughts? Thanks in advance Mike |

Sunday? Wow. Mine kicked on this morning during the ride in, which I also thought was odd (I was thinking about those grip heaters I've not yet installed, if that gives a clue about ambient). Not much heat at all on the right thigh. Didn't think a lot of it, just seemed odd. Of course, I had just gotten on it around this cool offramp with a slightly banked bumpy right hander... |

Yeah.. Sunday's are a recent change... but very useful. My problem... it's kicking on and staying on until shortly after I turn the engine off. This is definitly not how it worked up until a few weeks ago?? |

My fan runs all of the time after the engine reaches operating temperature. My operating temperature is about 397 F. The fan comes on at 428 F and will not turn off during key on conditions until 356 F. Some will argue that it is not normal for other xb's but it is normal for stock Uly's. The after market right side scoop will reduce the fan's operation but will actually reduce the engines cooling capacity under the most extreme temperatures at low speed. In most parts of the country that is not ann issue and the right side scoop is probably the best remedy. |

Interesting.. mine has only started doing this recently.. and the temps in the morning are in high 50's/low 60's. This is a recent developement on mine and given that many are reporting that their fans run less as they rack up more miles...just a bit concerned that something is not quite right. |

My fan runs constantly after warming up. I've learned to accept that it's ok. Get some earplugs or earphones, it helps. |

Regarding the fan evaluation I am performing. I have inquiries in to NTN for "temperature effects" on Life calculations, since I could not find them on their or any other mfgrs web site. Its my understanding from memory that at 350F-450F you could expect a significant decrease in life just due to the impact on the metal properties. I have also given up in trying to get valid fan speed data with the jury rigged test I had been attempting and have ordered an inexpensive ($80) noncontact digital tachometer from Amazon.com. Should be here in a week at the most. Then I should be able to wrap it up! Joe |

I have earplugs and an XM radio (helmet speakers) ... could be that because of all the attention on the fan I'm just more sensitive to it It hasn't stopped me from riding... |
