Most major motorcycle gear manufacturers produce synthetic gear. Faux leather or synthetic boots and gloves are all around too. Not sure why you feel the need to apologize. Just wondering, as you make it a special point to proclaim that you "don't wear dead", do you wear the living?

I saw a program the other day on Nova about African Lions.

There are 5 BILLION people on this earth now, and only 100,000 lions left. I wonder what will happen when people and cockroaches are the only animal forms left on this planet...

Anyway, yah dude - there is just as much synthetic ballistic nylon gear out there as leather. Check out www.aerostitch.com if you want the best of the best. My gear is from fieldsheer as a budget alternative.

But remember, nylon is made from petrochemicals, refined from crude oil, which drives various socioeconomic conflicts resulting in oppression, corruption and even war in some cases, not to mention that ultimately oil comes from dead animals and plant life too - albeit on a longer time scale.

Still, I'd rather wear oil and kill people than wear leather and kill animals. : ) But, my reasoning is not so honorable as being vegan.

This should be right up your alley : )

I bought a set of Rukka riding gear. Quite expensive, but also very well made and comfortable to wear. A bit cumbersome in certain situations, but that's a longer story. Their site is not great (being kind here), nice flash and such, but short on substance. Their gear however gets great reviews in EU.

Rukka is available in the US here

I'll second the Aerostitch recommendation as well. I used one of their suits for a few seasons (thanks Court ;)), and it's a great piece of kit. I wish they would keep up with the progress made in armour, but you could always replace the Aerostitch armour with a set from T-Pro - sold in the US by Johnson Leather. They have a bunch of good armour/protection related links on that page as well.

Motoport: http://www.motoport.com/ is becoming more known for their kevlar gear and may be a nice option as well. No personal experience.

You'll find many more options here;

What size do you wear? I have a very nice Harley FXRG 1-piece riding suit that I don't wear. It's a size medium. They're water resistant, plenty of vents, great protection (padding in shoulder, elbows, hips & knees). It sold new for around $500. I've worn mine about 6 times. It's yours for $150.

I have used both Areostich and Motoport apparel and have been very happy with their products. I find the motoport ventilated kevlar jacket to be the most comfortable non-leather jacket I've owned.

Many good products are available, buy the one you like and more importantly wear the one you buy. We don't want you to loss your skin.

Like they've said there are loads of synthetic riding gear options available that offer
anywhere from minimal to great protection for you in case of a crash. This is much
the same as the range of leather available from fashion to race.

The only area I knoe of that you may run into trouble with is in gloves. While
there are some synthetic winter and summer weight gloves out there they do not offer
the same level of protection as leather in a sliding situation without being very bulky.
There may be some out there that are adequate (alpine stars makes their smx series)
but I've never seen a pair I thought offered the same level of protection as an armored
leather gauntlet/race glove made of leather.

If you do find a glove that works for you protection wise let us know.

I do have a pair of Joe Rocket summer weight gauntlets in XL that list as being 5% leather
(I don't know where they put it I don't see it with all the synthetic leather)that
I've never worn. They are black and grey and they are yours for the asking Jolfvr666.
If you want them PM me and they're yours. I got them as a gift, but I already have a
couple of pairs of gloves I favor so they are just sitting on the shelf right now.

I have a Fieldsheer jacket, which I love, and will buy the pants soon as well. http://www.fieldsheer.com One of my buddies bought a jacket from motoport.com and really likes it. As most have already stated, gloves are hard to come by. I ended up buying some Alpinestar gloves that just had a leather palm. I am currently looking for boots. SIDI seems to have a few but it's hard to find some everyday type riding shoes that are non-leather.

http://www.waterjets.org/vegan_motorcyclist.html is a really good site though it's a bit out of date. There has been a few discussions about this on a vegan forum I am a member of. I'll take a look and see if there is any more info for you. Happy to help out a fellow weirdo vegan.
