Oh but by the way...I do think the Eye-talions may have us beat on the sound department. Don't get me wrong, I love the noises my bike makes, but I've ridden with a few Ducs and my buddy's Aprilia Mille...and they sound incredible at full throttle. |

Kyle, how could I forget. You really really need to hear the 750 Brutale, and the Benelli TNT. Both those sound incredible. Almost like an F1 car on full chat.
how about the clacking of the extra cam shaft in the ducs clack clack clack... no thanks. desmo crap: to high maint, to expensive, limited parts avail, limited dealer support, to much status symbol and BS with a duc.... riding around trying to look pretty.... gimmie a break
Todd, you're obviously a Ducati expert. Perhaps you can explain where I might find the 'extra' camshaft you mention, in my own 916?
I can't be arsed to debate the merits and rewards of the Desmo valve train with anyone on a Buell forum who is ignorant of its workings and its cost effectiveness. Suffice to say, you are not alone in your beliefs, but like others, it is most definitely your loss having such a blinkered misunderstanding.
When Steve owned mine he rode it from Yorkshire to Assen on three occasions, as well as the odd track day here and there. I don't live in the heart of London or Leeds where city slickers exist, but that said I've never met anyone who posed on a racing Ducati. Check out the scene in any bike park on a sunny Sunday in the UK and I'm always impressed by the Ducati's as they always appear to be well used and enjoyed by their owners. There's a reason for this I think. Ducati owners tend to be long term fans once bitten by the bug. That means they've come to accept, understand, put up with, even enjoy, the harsh racing style they're blessed with. They are what they are for what they are, and once you've fallen for its rewards you won't give a shite what the rumour mill throws out. They are unique in the sense that they truly are a racing bike that is produced in road legal form. Nothing comes close to the experience they offer. Learn to live with one and you'll understand Ducati with a respect you'll find hard to allow any other manufacturer.
Before I bought mine I always liked it and wanted it. I've enjoyed thoroughly the experience of putting several thousand miles on it once I wrestled it from Steve's hands. Remind me to thank his ex wife for their divorce. Many of those miles are fun fast and sweaty hard.

I like Ducati very much even rode one just like the one above posted. But replacement parts are extreme $$$$. |

Hey teddagreek. I am going to dallas on monday to pick up the very bike in your pic. I also had them install the race kit. I have a xb12s with a micron also. I'll let you guys know my thoughts on the sound when I get back!!! I am very excited!!! As I have heard black is the fastest color |

I've seen this bike in person on the road well in actually in a parking lot...The guy was pulling in barley bliped the throttle no clutch and pulled a nice wheelie...
They don't call them monsters for no reason... |

I also beg to differ about the sound of a Duc. My wife had a 98 Monster that we have since sold that would make most Harley guys with drag pipes cower. She had D&D megaphones, and when we rode together, no one could even hear my 9R with a Latus, which is not the quietest pipe out there.
I also agree with the above post about the sweet sound of a Duc with Termis. But for just pure volume and nastiness, I would have to hand it to the D&D. |

I'm sure I'm biased (beacuse I can't really hear much any more...) but I like the XB12 with a Force pipe for sound.
I was on a ride with about 15 Buells and a number of Ducatis, Guzzi's and Aprillias one time... (and a VERY quick 2up FJR 1300...)
A number of us had just left the final fuel stop and were all putting through a tunnel at the lower end of a ~70 mile run up Hwy 191 here in Arizona. The Ducs revved a little near the middle. It was a good sound. Made me giggle as a matter of fact. I certainly appreciate the sound of a great engine. The Guzzi's and Aprillia's did the same a second later. That too was a good sound. There were four of us in the tunnel that were riding Buells. Three with Force pipes. An XB9, an XB12 and an S2. We revved ours a little too. Every rider in the tunnel in front of us looked back in unison. Every rider in front of us pulled to the side and waived us by as we came out of the tunnel.
We never saw most of them until the end of the road (except Kobie on his RSVR and Ruben on a Tuono). Kobie went by one of the times I stopped to wait for the other two Buells. I'm sure the rest of the Italians were just interested in a more leasurely ride that day...
As a side note... Ruben and that FJR caught up to me about 1/3 of the way up the road. All I have to say is that Jerry Haughten is a BRILLIANT rider when it comes down to it. Gravel and bumps, 2 up... I saw him rail around a number of turns with the peg folded up and making sparks while he just casually hung his inside leg out... sometimes dragging it along the road just for fun. Denise on the back all the while, hanging off right along with him. Two great riders if I do say so myself  . Hwy 191 was most certainly NOT made for an FJR. It was made for a Buell.
For power...

Oh... sorry... I don't really know anything about Ducati Monsters...

I was just out east (Long Island) and visited Moto Italia, the local Italian exotic shop. I was looking for the Benelli TnT, but they're not in yet... probably end of next week. They had a lot of SWEET looking Monsters, including the S4Rs, but the bike that caught my eye was the Bimota Tesi 2. Dang, I like funky looking bikes, but that thing is TOO funky for even MY tastes! Looks like a Transformer built from an erector set! It almost looks like it has a Buell exhaust mounted backwards! And that "Weird Alice" steering mechanism looks like an accident about to happen. James Parker did that concept best with the RADD front end; a nice, simple steering tube. But I guess the GTS1000 was before it's time.
Anyway, I can't wait to see a TnT in person. That's the coolest looking bike I've seen since the MV Agusta Brutale. And I bet that 1130cc Triple has an awesome exhaust howl, too! |

M1 I need to get one of those stories. More importantly, I need to get a bunch of Buells together. Most of the time I ride with a bunch of Jap liter bikes. Don't get me wrong, it's nice having the only bike that sounds like it has a pair, but I would love to be in a group that just thunders down the road. It's time to find that group.

heehee... i love how wound up everyone gets!!! desomdromic engines dont have another cam shaft? how the hell do they close the valves mechanically? crazy. cool. sorry rocket. i definitly am not an expert regarding..... anything.

Ducati desmo engines don't have another camshaft to close the valves, they have extra lobes on the same shaft.
I'm not an expert at anything either, I just portray one on the internet. |

Ducati desmo engines don't have another camshaft to close the valves, they have extra lobes on the same shaft.
Todd, consider yourself closed!
So the 4 valve Ducati head has two camshafts, making a total of four cams per V twin motor. About the same as a Buell then, except the Buells are low down in the right side case.

Deuceman is right about the D&D megaphones. Their Monster was the baddest sounding bike I've ever heard, sort of a cross between a Duc and a Harley or Buell. My wife had a Monster with Termis on it and it sounded great, but nothing could beat those D&Ds.
