Look what the nice UPS man brought me the other day:

brake rotors

Braking wave rotors, ISR hand controls and Buell PM 6 pot calipers, Motul RBF600 fluid, Lyndall brake pads. That should slow me down - or hurl me over the bars : )

Those rotors are absolutely gorgeous. I'll try to weigh them, as well as my late style tuber rotor and the old stock cast iron rotor. Interesting to see what, if any, the weight savings might be - single disk vs. single disk mind you - I have no illusions that those 2 rotors would weigh less than a single.

More to come ...

Henrik

Very shiney and anything *but* mundane : D

... to the moon Alice"!

You're probably right, although I have found the single disk stocker disappointing. I even tried upgrading to the newer, more rigid Nissin caliper. And keep in mind we're talking about an S2T that mostly hits the road in touring trim, i.e. 550 lbs bike, 200+ lbs rider w/ gear and maybe 100 lbs of luggage.

Also, you can adjust the mechanical advantage on the ISR controls, so there is some room to tweak to taste. But I'll be careful the first couple of rides ;)

Very nice bike btw. Looks like a PM caliper on yours too?

Thanks Henrik, with my braking rotor it just takes a finger tip to bring me to a quick stop and that's not using the rear at all. I know you will but just be careful!

Fireman - I did indeed. I bought it from Cap a couple of years ago. I'll post pictures and description as things progress.

As of right now I'm pulling stuff off the bike. Bodywork is off and suspension is coming off tomorrow - going out to Traxxion for rebuild.

The planned work for now (needs to be ready for beginning of September in case I can get time off for BRATPAC II) is a long list. Tires, bearings, swingarm bearings, aux lights, hopefully a charging system upgrade, late model shifter etc. etc. I'll keep you posted.

S2 in pieces

As you can see the renovation has really progressed ... to the point where I'm beginning to wonder if I'll get it back together for BRATPAC II ...

Here are a few of the things I've come across so far:

Ripped front isolator:

front isolator

Brake caliper rebuild; only the new left side caliper is back together. PM buggered up my order so I'm still waiting on replacement pistons for the old right side. From the pictures you can see the differential bores:

front caliper apart

pistons in

I also tried to install an oil cooler, but the braided lines included in the kit were 2-3" too long for a good fit, so I'll need to find oil line fittings that will fit the cooler:

oil cooler fittings

I believe these are AN fittings?? and they are 1/2 UNF thread (boy has that thread chasing kit come in handy many times the last days).

Can anyone confirm whether it is indeed AN fittings and would any of you know what size oil line would fit that size fitting?

Finally I got to take a good look at my bars and am wondering if they are the older recalled items. As you can see from this photo the bars are dimpled above the clamp:

dimple

But in this next shot, you can see that part of the bar has been cut away before being welded onto the clamp.

S2 bar inside

Can anyone tell for sure if these are pre or post recall?

Of course the renovation is being held up a bit by all the stupid little details that you don't realize until you're in the middle of something:

I'd been wanting either angled or at least shorter valve stems for easier air filling at pressure checking, but so far I haven't found anything that will fit the S2 Marchesini rims, so the wheels are sitting on the floor waiting for valve so I can install tires so I can install at least front wheel so I can get the bike supported well before I pull the side plates so I can pull the swingarm so I can grease the swingarm bearings ..................

Both front master cylinder and brake lines are in the mail.

Bits and bobs for aux wiring as well as aux lights are still in the mail - and need custom brackets that I of course can't finish designing until I have the actual lights to measure and compare.

.... and so on and so forth. Wish me luck : )

I have had good luck getting my AN line stuff from Summit Racing.Henrik, the lines are super easy to make up. I bought a length of #6 line(the 6 refers to 6/16 or a 3/8 line and a #8 would be a 8/16 or 1/2" line)and a cutter and whipped out all the new oil and fuel lines on the Buell and Yamaha for all the new turbo related stuff.I got the Summit generic branded stuff, cheaper and just as good of quality as the rest. They deliver very fast, too.
BTW,I have a set of bars sitting at home, though I cannot say they don't look just like yours, and a spare caliper if PM parts do not come through.
Poor bike looks like it was drawn and quartered.

H -- I used to have on of those coolers -- it is most definately AN-6 -- a good gearhead/hotrod store may have the supplies locally

Dan; I did see Aaron's excellent work and write-up of his bars. They's unfortunately end up being a tad too low and forward for me. I do mostly long distances on the S2, so comfort and a more upright riding position is key for me.

Loki; I'm in NYC and am limited to public transportation or walking. Basically, unless the shop is around the corner - rarely the case - I'm better off ordering : )

Fireman; drawn and quartered indeed - I'm getting a little antsy wrt. the time line for BRATPAC II. Can't have too many goofs, shipping errors or forgotten parts before I'll be up the creek so to speak.

Thanks for the AN-6 confirmation FMJ and Bomber. So for a straight connection I'd need something like this:

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SUM%2D220690B&N=7 00+4294924496+4294923377+4294906722+400304+115&autoview=sku

The hoses that came with the kit are steel braided lines, and I prefer black rubber hoses, so if those fittings would work I can make the lines to perfect fit myself.

There's an auto parts store in midtown Manhattan not too far from work, so I'll give that a try today.

If you are going to use rubber, like above line, you need these type fittings--

Have you checked the speedo drive clearance on l/s disc? I had to massage the center hole and the drive a bit on my EBC so it would not bind.

Thanks for the links Fireman. I guess that's kinda what I'm looking for. I guess I'll need to use hose clamps to secure the hose on the barbs.

Massage the clearances on brake rotor and speedo drive? So *now* you're telling me. In other words - I haven't ...

Ah, yes. The charging system. I feel confident that it *will* work, but am currently stuck on a few questions/points:

- If you replace the stock rotor, stator and regulator with XB items, this will supposedly work. Some have stated they are currently running such a set-up but have not reported back with important details.

- of course the stator and regulator are the key parts here and will have to be XB items. The rotor however - I don't know if a newer 8-bolt style Tuber rotor will work or if it has to be an XB part as well.

- That wouldn't be a big issue except that I have an old style 4-bolt Tuber rotor and would like to upgrade to the more securely fastened 8-bolt rotor. However, the only way to buy a rotor is as a rotor/engine sprocket assembly, and the tooth count is different for Tubers and XBs. So in order to get an XB rotor I would have to buy an XB rotor/sprocket combination, have the XB sprocket pressed off, buy an 8-bolt Tuber sprocket and have that pressed on. That'd leave me with an XB sprocket on the shelf (a bit over $100), plus labor charges for the pressing off and on. A cost I'd rather save if I can find a way.

- so I have tried to round up information whether it is possible to 1) buy an XB rotor separately, since it is possible to buy an engine sprocket separately or 2) if a tuber rotor will work with an XB stator, in which case I can just buy a new style Tuber rotor/sprocket assembly.

Hope that made sense. If I get any solid information I will post it here and in the KV along with part numbers, prices etc.

Henrik

I've wanted to put a PM front caliper on my '98 S-1 for a while. Not for any performance advantage if there is any but because I like the little horsey on it!
Thanks for doing all the run around for us and finding out the sizes and part numbers!

Seth; if you don't have one already, I have a spare PM caliper in the garage. It is in dire need of a rebuild though. As for performance, I always thought the PM single caliper came up a bit short - which is why I'm trying to get a dual disk set-up mounted (not going well ...). Back when the S1 racers used the WP forks as an upgrade, the hot brake set-up was the late model Buell master cylinder and the Nissin caliper.
