Hi folks! A black Uly and I became close friends on Friday, 8/4/06. Hard bags were also ordered. The warning stickers and hand guards were promptly removed and the factory mirrors were replaced with `06/`07 Aprilia Tuono mirrors that have a lower profile with slightly better rear vision. New Pirelli Scorpion Sync tires were installed yesterday (love `em) and the Uly got an early engine oil/filter change to get rid of those nasty, metallic, 100-mile break-in particles. I'll switch to synthetic at the 1,000 mile service. I'm studying breathing improvement mods and currently leaning toward either the standard Drummer or SS Drummer with a hose kit, catch can, K&N filter and ECU mapping (experienced suggestions will be appreciated). I've carefully read the dyno exhaust comparison which, BTW, was excellent. The bike design is brilliant with stellar handling but it's unnervingly tall for my 30" inseam...even with the low seat. So, it will soon go to GMD Computrack in Atlanta for a custom Penske shock and front fork mods to lower it approximately to XB12Ss specs (same chassis) while enhancing suspension compliance for twisties and one-up touring. I'll probably add a LSL Steering Damper too since I've known the terror of a full tank slapper. A dirt/gravel driveway is the farthest off-road this bike is likely to go--I'm a mountain twisty rider. Here is a comparison picture of the Uly/Tuono mirrors: http://www.zenfire.ws/buell.htm Question please: I might want to change the Uly's plastic bar ends. How are they attached...threads, glue, press-fit or what? Thanks! Tom in Tennessee (Message edited by warbaby on August 10, 2006) |

Congratulations on the new bike! Welcome. The mirrors look great. Would the hand guards still fit with those mirrors? I like my hand guards...they keep the bugs off my gloves. |

I have had issues with the DL and would highly recommend that you wait until Al at American Sport Bike starts selling his MAP for this application. Email me if you need more DL info. I really like my XBS fender, traction grips, right side scoop and Vista cruise throttle lock too. Frank |

Tom,mirrors look good whats the cost? Bar ends are pressed in. I've just got the standard ULY drummer nice sound+performance. Thanks. I don't know the cost. I have a `07 Tuono that I installed CRG bar-end mirrors on and therefore had the stock Tuono mirrors in my garage. They just happen to fit perfectly. However, you can call the following Aprilia dealer for cost information (they are probably the most competent Aprilia dealer in the USA): http://www.af1racing.com/ Congratulations on the new bike! Welcome. The mirrors look great. Would the hand guards still fit with those mirrors? I like my hand guards...they keep the bugs off my gloves. I just held one of my hand guards in place (with the Tuono mirrors installed) and could see no reason at all why the hand guards would not fit just fine. That is exactly my set-up: std Drummer, Drummer catch can, K&N filter and direct link ECM. I have had issues with the DL and would highly recommend that you wait until Al at American Sport Bike starts selling his MAP for this application. Email me if you need more DL info. I really like my XBS fender, traction grips, right side scoop and Vista cruise throttle lock too. Thanks. I'll call Al ASAP. Anyone ordering the Tuono mirrors will also need the Tuono top mirror nuts (2) and the Tuono rubber cover boots (2). The mirrors will then bolt on and look like a factory-integrated installation. I added a few more pictures to the mirror link above to help clarify the conversion: http://www.zenfire.ws/buell.htm |

Give yourself a chance to get used to it before you start lowering the bike. I have a 30" inseam as well, and was a bit pensive about the seat height. After a few rides, though, I got used to it. Now managing the bike (with the stock seat) is no issue. |

Now managing the bike (with the stock seat) is no issue. I appreciate your intentions but after owning 2 dozen + bikes, I know what works for me and what doesn't. I will never be content with the current riding height. Lowering the Uly was discussed with my suspension shop before I bought the bike. The Uly will end up essentially being a XB12Ss with better street suspension, factory hard bags, a high handlebar and unique Uly styling...all traits that I prefer. |

Welcome to the fold. It is a great bike and as the miles add up it runs better and better. Keep us posted about the lowering but as the suspension lowers the bend in your knees will increase. (Message edited by electraglider_1997 on August 10, 2006) |

Keep us posted about the lowering but as the suspension lowers the bend in your knees will increase. How does lowering the front and rear suspension change the relationship between the seat and foot pegs on a Uly? |

I am another new Uly rider here. Finally found the deal, color and dealer that pried open the checkbook. Salesman was pretty knowledgeable and a BLAST rider himself. Service manager stopped to talk about the Buells and how impressed he was with them. One thing however. I mentioned I liked to change the oil at about 100 miles on a new bike and the salesman (not svc manager) discouraged that. He thought the initial oil might be special to help with breakin. I doubt this and prefer to change it and filter at 100 and then after that at scheduled intervals. Any comments on this? Bike it running very nicely and day is great so I am very pumped right now. |

Thanks for the welcome folks! Aeholton says: Alchemy - I changed oil within the first 100 miles and again at 500. Sounds about right to me. I am betting the factory does not put any special oil in them. Probably just HD 20-50 SAE as I am planning to use for replacement. I would like to get a confirmation if it is anything other than the HD 20-50 SAE. |

I just changed my Uly's oil at 500 miles. I dropped the primary (plenty of metal shavings stuck to the drain bolt - but the oil looked brand new). And the main enginer oil (looked dark brown, didn't smell, not many particles). I am glad I did the change and just tossed in the HD Formula + and the HD 20W-50 std oil. I'll change to synthetic around 3000 miles or 5000 miles depending. |

The Uly got a precision chassis analysis at GMD Computrack Tuesday and a custom Penske shock is being built. The front forks will be machined, re-sprung, and re-valved for my riding weight and handling preferences. The bike's trail will increase slightly when it is lowered 2". After the chassis session, I moved on to Deal's Gap for 3 days of Dragon flogging and new tire scuffing. The Pirelli Scorpions stuck like a cat on a carpet. At 350 miles, the engine is loosening and clearly getting stronger...2nd gear power wheelies are hard to resist now. http://www.zenfire.ws/buell.htm |

Congratulations on the new Uly. I too bought my bike from Bumpas. I live in Mt Juliet. You may want to consider the Buell race kit. Bumpas had 5 left when I got mine from them a couple of months ago. I am satisfied with it. That Tuno you have is an awesome bike also. I test rode one last year and came real close to getting one, however, I sold my Guzzi and bought the Uly. instead. Good luck perhaps we'll cross paths sometime. |

Oh, I'd love to have it. I just don't don't know how I'd swing it financially. The wife has taken to wanting her own bike now. She is wanting a Blast and try as I might I don't think I could get her on a Tuno right off. She has never ridden on her own. |

Warbaby and Chris_in_TN. There is a local forum on CF for middle TN folks. Here is the link. http://www.cycleforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=328 We usually do a Thursday night "Bike Night" and there are always local rides planned. Check it out. I'd be nice to have another Uly or two in the pack. There are currently two represented, me and ChadHargis. I hope to see you around. (Message edited by ft_bstrd on August 19, 2006) |

We'd love to have you guys around. Riding is a blast, but riding with friends is so much better. The advantage here is that there is always someone doing a ride somewhere. So you get to meet some great people and find a ride just about any time you want. Besides, what's the fun of hitting a hole in one when there isn't anyone there to witness it! Let me know when you are ready to make your appearance, and I'll introduce you to everyone. We want to make shure you get jumped in good and proper! (Message edited by ft_bstrd on August 19, 2006) |
