here is the deal . riding back from the store and about 1\2 mile form home the check engine light comes on. Assesment , no burning smell no loss in power just light . so i continue home . 1\4 mile from home the guages die , my lights dim and the bike will not keep running under 2500 rpms . i kill it and push it he rest of the way ( all down hill ) . get back and check to see if there are ant loose rubbed wires etc. nothing . turn teh key dim lights and the fuel pump sounds sluggish , try to start it and the click click sound of the starter solenoid kicking over but not he starter turning . dead battery , ok . i get a new battery and the same thing again ( fresh charge overnight ) . Starter bad? other problem ? ran the trouble codes and nothing shows , nothing was stored . I am stumped , mabye a faulty battery , mabye something else , no clue . any sugestions let me know , later dudes . |

check for loose battery cable terminations, especially the ground cable. |

Check all fuses first. Can a starter go bad? Yes. When you get the "click, click" sound, that usually indicates a poor gound. A poor ground will point to a bad: battery charging system starter sensors etc... and throw you off the trail. The most likely culprit is a bad ground in the starting system. Also, to check for a bad voltage regulator: Place your multi-meter across the battery terminals to read DC volts. Make a note of your battery voltage before you start the bike. Start your bike. Rev engine to 3000rpm. Meter should read 13+volts. If it does not, replace voltage regulator. $70 at Buell dealer. |

checked ground cable off of battery , loose and rusted. fixed the cable. changed battery to a known good battery , bike is fine for two days now it is doing the same thing again . i dont have a multi meter and i am probibly going to take it to the dealer this weekend to let them figure it out , it is still under the 3 year warrenty . thanks for the help guys . |

Took my battery off and cleaned the connections, tightened my ground cable, started fine with no trip meter re-set. HOWEVER, can someone tell me an easier way to hook that stupid leather strap over the battery ??? I tried everything and the strap is just not going to get attached. What will happen if it doesn't and I ride it ?? CJ |

Hook the strap by using a screw driver to push the metal loop around. Sub65... It sounds like a stator failure. |

I tried with a screwdriver, scrapped my finger up, cursed up a storm, threw said screwdriver on the concrete garage floor, it bounced up and nearly got the car, finally said f%#@ it !! Also tried with a vise grip thingy, and it was too fat in the small space to be any good !! So will it hurt to ride with the strap loose, at least until I find a way or someone to help get the damn thing hooked back up ?? |

It won't help the battery at all... Batteries don't really like sharp forces at all. One thing is that you'll probably want to hook the metal loop first. Make sure it's the proper orientation as well. The metal loop sticks out further on one side of the strap than the other. |
