My bike wont turn over. It just starts clicking real loud when I try to turn it over. Anyone know what the problem is and what I can do about it? Any advise would be very appreciated. James |

Dead battery. Loose cables. Loose cable-to-cable end. Bad starter. |

James, I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago. My tender said my battery was always charged, but the battery was still bad. I had it checked and it was only putting out 50 amps. But, still check your connections first. Steve |

James.....I went round and round for weeks trying to figure out what was going on. Finally SMHD/Buell looked at it and found that the ECM had an open ground. Hope this helps |

Boisebuelly, First suspect would be the battery. Charge it up, turn on the ignition/lights for one minute then turn it off, check voltage. If below 13.0V, it is likely bad. If below 12.5V, it is definitely bad. Trolldaddi, As you have already learned, a battery tender can report that a bad battery is fully charged. Thus a battery tender is not a good indicator of battery viability. |

a functioning battery tender can charge and/or maintain a GOOD battery. a 36 dollar battery tender will NOT do any of the following: 1) Charge a dead battery 2) Charge a defective battery 3) Load test any battery 4) Measure the internal impedance of any battery. A glowing LED on a cheap battery charger is NOT an indicator of a GOOD battery. BlackSun: the ECM is grounded externally at pins 2 and 11 on the black connector. sounds a little like a "smokescreen" to me. |

Hi all, Thought I was going to enjoy some nice weather riding today, but I got this same problem as listed above instead on my 12R. I had the issue a month ago so I thought it was the battery so I did the following: 1. Checked the tender (read "charged") 2. Removed battery, cleaned connections 3. Took the battery to Battries Plus who load tested it, charged it over the weekend and said the battery was fine. 4. Rode for a couple weeks and put away for two (rain) Now, same click, click, click, click. Weird issue. I noticed that the digital clock reset itself when I turn the key and engine switch off. Any suggestions? Fuse? Relay? Diodes? I greatly appreciate any help. |

It's the original ('04). I just took it out and I'm headed to get a new one now b/c the weather is going to be too nice tomorrow not to ride. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it IS the battery. Fuses and relays checked out. This is my first Buell so I'm learning as I go. |

Good call. A 5 year old battery is really pushing it as far as reliability goes because batteries tend to self discharge faster as they age and, if the bike has a clock, that puts a further drain, however minimal it is, on its ability to hold a charge. But if that doesn't do the trick, check back in here for further tips on what to look for. Oh, one more thing. When you put the new battery in, there were some instances reported of the battery cable hold down screws being slightly too long resulting in the screws not clamping the cable lug tightly on the battery post. So the fix is to put a small washer under the head of the screw when fastening down the battery cables. This keeps the screw from bottoming out and allows it to clamp the cable tightly. |
