I inadvertently changed the transmission oil in my S1 using Harley 20w-50 oil. I Didn’t realize I had messed up ‘till after a few rides. In looking through the archives looks like I should be running Mobil 1 15w50 motor and Mobil 1 75w90 gear oil in primary. Did I do any damage by running the wrong oil? |

not likely just change it and change it sooner next time. |

Why not play it safe and use the recommended Harley primary oil. No brainer. Thats all i have ever used in my tranny's and never had a problem. |

You didn't mess up - that oil is perfectly fine for your transmission. |

The shop manual calls for SPORT-TRANS FLUID, whatever that is. It doesn't give any alternatives or weight ranges to use. |

I think you are under the impression that gear lube and motor oil are rated on the same scale for viscosity - they are not. 20w50 engine oil is approved for use in Sportster/Buell transmissions. |

Moto: I believe Harley now offers 3 options for use in the Sportster/Buell Primary and transmission: Sport trans Formula+ Syn3 I had been using Sport trans until they came out with Formula+. I switched last year to Formula+ because it works with my Superglide primary and transmission too. I can't say that I noticed any shift effort or feel difference between Sport trans and Formula+. Thanks for the Posts!! I just got Formula+ at the dealer. The parts guy said to flush out the old (20w/50 motor) oil as well, didn't suggest any products to use. Looking at Pyroil Engine Flush - 'melts sludge and cleans engine' etc. Contains kerosene and other cleaning agents. Since it's designed for a engine, I'm a bit leary of running it in my transmission. What do you guys think about flushing the transmission? Any specific product suggestions? Thanks again!! |

You don't need to flush your system. The HD OIL is fine to put in your primary |

don't flush you dont want the solvents on the stator, or the clutch plates. |

I've always used Mobile synthetic 75-90W in my trans with great results. Gear oil and motor oil are rated different when it comes to viscosity. A 90W gear oil is about the same as a 30w motor oil on the viscosity index. If you go to the Amsoil site they recommend their 20-50w motor oil for the evo primary case in a sporty engine. Either will work fine. Don't worry about flushing, just drain and refill. Hodakaguy |
