I love the look on peoples faces when I put the key in the ignition and the fuel pump kicks on. I look at the and say....Ya it's fuel injected. Dart....far as the sweet spot in temp goes. I cannot find any info that shows what it really is for these engines. Besides I just about roasted my ya ya's the other day riding home. I will take a cooler running bike. The fan still runs on power off so it is still running hot enough IMHO. |

I love riding my Buell. I don't give a single floater what spectators think about me or my bike. The question is: You posing or are you riding? |

"The question is: You posing or are you riding?" Oh, can we feel your muscles? The fan and the fuel pump noise both bother ME, as I prefer listening to the motor and exhaust. That is one of the great pleasures of the bike. Rec to Buell, find a different fan and fuel pump! |

AGAIN, not a thread about weather you "like or dis-like fan", and we obviously all like our Buells or we wouldn't have bought it. I had an R1 before this and also had items I didn't like on it and either fixed it after market parts or found a way to make it better. IF you buy wax and polish your Buell are you a poser.......NO you just like your bike to look good. So no, I'm not a poser because I don't like the loud fan noise after I shut the bike off. AGAIN, please post up info if you know how to better this feature or don't post up please. Thanks |

I like my Fan I have fun with the noise, looks and questions.. Flux Capacitor, "Loud Fans save Lives", "Don't touch it or it will blow!" Get a really loud exhaust then you won't hear it!! I understand that fan keeps us from having a Cat converter - jeez, i'd take two if it helps!! MB |

Has anyone done a real Scientific test on the right side scoop... I have a few scenarios In my opinion the scoop works or works differently than we think.. IF IT WORKS? A. The scoop works but Buell wouldn’t revise the design because of the legality. Can you say Class Action… B. The scoop works but we will never see a revised cooling on the old motor but only on a new engine… IF IT WORKS DIFFERENTLY? A. It works at speed but at Idle and slow speeds its actually hotter because there not enough resistance to slow the air down… Someone needs to test this… Head temperature gauge. Oil temperature gauge. Exhaust temp gauge. Head Temp Sending units spark plug or drill and tap a bolt right on the top of the head.. on the head bolts the temp may not be as accurate as the others ways..

fix for the fan. I second the Jap or Euro bike. Not nearly the personality of the buell. that is why I bought it. |

the scoop works but it is not needed. and by saying works, it runs cooler at speed. and buell seems to think that the motor temp is fine where it is stock. i dont see where a class action would come in. the bike is not broke, so there is really no need to fix it. i dont see how it would be hotter at idle or low speeds with the scoop, the fan is pulling the air from the front of the bike, i dont see why the air needs so be slowed down to work, the more air you pull over the head, the better. |

actually, you dont need any of that to test the temp at lower speeds, my fan does not come on when the bike is running, in town or traffic or whatever. now if i left it idle for long enough, i am sure it would come on. so the temp is lower at any speed with the scoop. |

There was some talk about the Right Side Scoop actually increasing engine heat at idle that made some sense. The existing cover creates a path to suck air across the heads, by opening this with a scoop theres theory the fan won't pull air across the fins. For now, I'm going with your results Pupu. Bottom line, sounds like fan runs less with Right Side Scoop so I'm buying one. I also think it looks cool for the record, kinda reminds me of an older Yamaha Vmax with air induction that I thought looked good for it's time. For those that like "fan noise" you've saved yourself some money by not needing it. |

"Bottom line, sounds like fan runs less with Right Side Scoop so I'm buying one" My experience after two years with the scoop: The fan runs less irrespective of what kind of riding I am doing or what the temp is. I love having the fan remain silent. Good stuff. |

A lot of us with only a left side scoop have reported that our fan runs all the time at highway speeds. This tells me that the rear cylinder is running a bit too hot (and, that try as it might, the fan is unable to bring the temperature down at highway speeds). Conversely, those with an added rh scoop report that the fan doesn't run at all at highway speeds and much less even at lower speeds. Therefore the rh scoop must be useful to the reduce rear cylinder temperature to below the point where the ecm considers that it's getting too hot. Seems to me a right hand scoop is not just a way to reduce annoying fan noise but also an effective way to ensure that the rear cylinder doesn't run hotter than the front cylinder. It's no use saying that "Buell would have fitted a rh scoop if it was needed". Numerous bikes, cars and planes over the years have had modifications to their cooling systems and designs in general during their production life. No designer gets things absolutely perfect the first time. (Look at all the changes made to the XB design between 2002 and the present). It may be that the XB doesn't *need* a rh scoop - but the '07 probably doesn't *need* more slots in the airbox than the '06 either. |

this is the 5th generation though, i would think they would have added it by now if it needed it. i think assuming that just cuz the fan is running, it is to hot is a false saying. the fan might be keeping it exactly where it needs to be. to hot would be when the bike starts cutting spark. so i dont think the bikes are running hot. the bike was designed to run at a certain temp, if they could not meet that criteria, then they would have done something about it. just my opinion-i was wrong once before |

If the fan is running continuously at its highest speed - that tells me that it's trying to bring the temperature down - and not succeeding. (But I agree, this temperature would still be well below the danger point where the spark would be cut.) All I'm saying is - rather than have the fan screaming away at high speed ineffectually - wouldn't it be better just to fit a rh scoop? I guess it's like a choice between running the extractor fan in your toilet or opening the window. I'm saying why not do both? (Message edited by lenb on July 20, 2006) |

any thoughts on what exhaust to run with a right handed scoop... I wanted a micron full exhaust before this thread... whats the next best option for a slip on? |

Another reason you may have the fan running while riding... with the fan off it actually obstructs air flow from the air flow drawn in by the scoop. |

My fan runs darn near continuously when it's hot out but I've also noticed that the bike runs better when it's at these temperatures. The fan noise doesn't bother me one bit. It kinda gives me peace of mind when I hear it cause I know it's working. I think I'll stick with the stock set up since the bike isn't complaining about it. |

Here's an idea, how about a solenoid actuator that deploys the right side scoop when warranted? |

Blake, That modification would require a modification to quiet the whirrr sound of the scoop deploying................. |

Seems to me a right hand scoop is not just a way to reduce annoying fan noise but also an effective way to ensure that the rear cylinder doesn't run hotter than the front cylinder. Pull and check your plugs. You'll find that in stock form (with the fan and no RS Scoop) that the rear cylinder runs cooler than the front. As to BMC and the RS Scoop - several of us spoke to Erik at homecoming this year. They have tested the right hand scoop setup and found that "yeah, it worked, but it just wasn't necessary". |

A scoop with a flap inside that you can easily close during long idle times or slow speeds would be ideal. That way you can open it up during highway speeds and close it in traffic. However, I would want to ensure that it also blows extra air on the front cylinder. |

You know, you're probably the first person I've met who rides a Buell that doesn't like something that is good for their bike. So, to give you a little peace of mind, here it is directly from the Buell website. "After you turn off a motorcycle, the oil begins to break down, causing potentially harmful engine damage. Unless that motorcycle is a Buell®. The thermostatically-controlled fan continues to cool the oil even after you pull the key. It also has you covered if you happen to get stuck in traffic. It’s one more thing we’ve done to keep the Firebolt® primed for top performance." I think that that little message boxes up and outlines quite neatly the reason why the fan is the way it is. Erik does have a method to the madness and he does things for a reason, not to annoy you. Not only that I recall something being said on the website about how the fan keeps punk kids from sitting on your ride while you run in for a cuppa joe. |

A quiet fan would be great. I keep thinking that a custom squirrel cage fan might fit the bill. It would need to be thin, which is not a normal configuration for a squirrel cage fan, but it seems like it could be done. Or maybe that wouldn't help? I dunno, just thinking out loud. |
