For those of you that have installed a right side air scoop, what good do you think it does. Does the fan stay off or just go on less often. Gas mileage difference? Heat on leg difference? Where you buy it and how much? Oh yeah, why do suppose Buell doesn't have it on as a stock item? Thanks. |

Electraglider_1997, Al at American Sport Bike sells them; http://www.americansportbike.com Buy it and try it; let us know how it works for you... Note: all testing done after 1000 mile service. Bike now has 2000 miles. So far here's what I've done to my bike to see if it affects the cooling fan characteristics. Mobil 1 V-Twin oil = no change Reset TPS & AFV = no change Retard timing zero,-3,-6 = no change Remove right side scoop = no change No matter what I have done, so far, regardless of the ambient temperature. The fan comes on at around the 8 mile mark, give or take a mile, on the same test loop. After the fan starts running, it shrieks until the engine is shut down. |

Teeps, Very good information. Maybe you should try oil level. More oil, I think, should spread the heat to some degree. Your testing of the right scoop apparently showed no change. Anyway, I'm not inclined to spend 200 bucks for something like that without knowing that it does what they claim. Even then that is way too much for an item like that. The only reason I'm asking about the scoop is because it is over 90 and 100 F here everyday and once the Buell fan goes on there is no shutdown until I quit riding just as yours does. I hope no problem. |

I would suggest there is something wrong with his bike. The right side scoops works very well and keeps my fan off about 98% of the time. Best move I ever made. Cost is of course, subjective. |

my fan runs so often, so LOUD I get asked if I'm riding an electric bike I agree the extra scoops price is too high unless someone can say its a cure all. |

I worded that poorly as I doubt any scoop would really solve my complaint and that is the fan noise. I don't care if the fan ran 24/7 what I do mind is it scares animals small children and draws funny faces from all that here it. The manufacture of that fan must be a close family member of whom ever approved it for production. Most bikes have fans and many cars have electric fans but none sound like this thing, If the scoop was so effective that it would keep that fan nose from kicking in I would pay as high as $500 to shut it up, but I want to know its a guaranteed fix first. If someone offers a replacement fan that would more than likely solve my concern better. |

I doubt that more or cooler oil would alter the fan operation. I believe the temp sensor is at the hottest part of the combustion chamber. I would think that if more oil was beneficial Buell would have said fill the oil tank to the top and call it good.

Teeps, A lot of Buell riders have told me that it takes 5K miles to break this engine in. I have about 4K now and notice that my fan is running a bit less now. Ride it more... it will either help or you will get used to it! Happy Trails, WindRider |

Said it before, will say it again... Teeps, something is probably wrong with your bike if the fan runs constantly as you describe. Likely culprit is the cylinder head temperature sensor. |

The fan on my bike does seem to run less now that I've passed 5k, break-in temps on an air-cooled engine can get pretty high. Until my BMW broke in the head pipes were sapphire blue for a foot! But like Teeps my fan runs a lot, but the temps around here and on my trip last two weeks were in the 90-100's. My bike isn't even three months old yet but the fan just started making noises... I thought maybe the guard was loose but it's not. I guess maybe it may just rattle for years or might be ready to fail. I can't understand why it pulls superhot air through itself then onto brake fluid, shock body, ECM, battery, and whatever gets stored in the tail. Can someone tell me why it wasn't designed to work in reverse? I don't care about the noise at all, just as long as it works. |

Teeps, My Uly fan has the same characteristics as yours. In warm weather it comes on at 7-10 miles then it stays on until I shut down. In my opinion it is normal for stock ECM parameters. there are others that do not run as long. It is either race ecm, different stock ECM flash or right side air scoop installation. I have been told it will run less once it is broken in. I am approaching 7K and no change. I use AMS Oil MCV 20w-50. The fan is a good thing. most air cooled small engines (other than motorcycles) have the fan run 100 percent of the time. |

If I had to listen to my fan run all the time I would sell the bike. The motor and exhaust sound great, the fan sounds like shit (to me anyway). |

I life of firearms, chain saws, friday night racing and nail guns have cured my noisy fan problem. I can't hear it over the stock exhaust. The only thing I can hear well is an eternal ringing and thankfully, pinging! |

Well I know it's not unique to the '06 Uly ECM, as I have an '05 XB12 ECM in mine and it acts the same. I have been told it will run less once it is broken in. I can't speak for Harley engines, but "break in" shouldn't take more than a couple hundred miles. If break in is so important, how would race engines be explained? I am approaching 7K and no change. I use AMS Oil MCV 20w-50. The whole synthetic oil thing is a placebo if you ask me. I noticed no change what so ever after switching to the Mobil 1 V-Twin oil. This is seat of the pants, mind you. (that oil was given to me by the original owner, as I would never spend $10 a quart for oil.) The fan is a good thing. most air cooled small engines (other than motorcycles) have the fan run 100 percent of the time. You're right about that, my lawn mower, edger and weed wacker all have ducted fan cooling.

I had my wife on my Uly for the first time the other day. She really likes the room and comfort. First thing she said when we got to the burger joint was wow that seat is way up there and WTF is that noise! Anyway once we are back on the open road even at 90+ the fan seems to cycle on and off. I noticed the other day that if you kill the engine with the kill switch and the fan isn't on it may not come on. But, if you then turn the key off the fan comes on. Seems like a programming error to me. The fan should come on with the kill switch the same as keying it off, engine protection-wise that is. |

I received the plastic (stock look-alike)on Friday and promptly installed. I, also, wrapped the header pipes as it is getting really hot here in FL and my leg has been roasting. My wife and I took a 500 mile or so round trip this weekend to St. Augustine/Daytona/east coast of FL. Gotta say the fan comes on alot less. It only came on during stop and go city traffic and after shutting the engine down. It used to come on when running open road for more than 15 minutes or so. Not anymore. My wife noticed less heat (attributed to wrapping the pipes). Here are a couple of pictures.

The fan noise will get less as soon as the engine gets a few more miles. The Buell Engine takes about 2000 miles to get all the pieces working together. A good quality oil makes a great bit of difference cooling the Buell engine. We have had Buells since 1995, and all of them get stronger and run better after the 2000 mile mark. Good luck |
