Hello, My name is DiabloBrian and I love motorcycle gear. I have developed this thread for nothing more than praising the Gear Gods. If you would like, please join in. Haha, hey brian! I did the experienced riders course again today, man was it hot. I was in the full leathers,boots,gloves,fullface. Everyone else was in jeans, long sleeve shirt, full/half face, and gloves. I was sweating my a** off, but I knew I was safe. Even if we were only going 20mph. If nothing else at least everyone took me seriously because of my dressing. | ||

hahaha..just posted in quickboard how he HELPED covince me to get some gear..i'll repost as it was saved w/ "copy/paste" while i was writting it... only recently have i come to the conclusion about wearing gear. i WAS the type to NEVER wear a helmet, and if i did it was just a skid lid.(still wear it every so often but i am getting better only 2 times this year) last year bought my first REAL helmet.(weird doing tricks with it on compared to a open helmet) then this year i got some good gloves, now sidi boots are comming, soon to be followed by an icon jacket(1-2 weeks due to $$$$)i have always herd brian preach on the gear and NEW i should get some but NEVER considered it.you know ..wont happen to me plus it is soooo expensive. until recently. had 2 friends go down this year. one not to bad..the other not to good. opened my eyes you could say. you can get hurt real easy out there and the cagers ARE aiming for you! i swear they are! i also have 2 young boys 6 & 10. both love to ride anything w/ a motor. they have full motorcross gear. i preach to them constantly on gear. they asked why i don't have to wear it & they do.and that they want me to be safe.i'm like there hero, take them to every car/bike show i can.kill my tires cuz they LOVE burnouts.(how can i say no to them..lol) but they had a good point huh?!.(i owe it to them to come home EVERY time i ride).. so that was the last straw. now i am convinced i NEED gear to ride.i think between brian in the back of my mind and all his posts and the kids in the front of my mind with come home safe it worked. wife likes the idea of gear also as i love to do silly things here and there. cant help it..well i wont ramble on here...just thought i'd throw a quick experience out there..STAY SAFE GUYS! LOOKS LIKE THE "GEAR PUSHER" managed to get someone else "ADDICTED" to the stuff..lol not sorry this time for my loooong story..lol | ||

Right on. This is a great thread. I've seen and heard of too many people getting in slow speed wrecks and if they would of had the "correct" gear on they would of faired 100% better than they did. Shorts on a bike? WTF. Anyway - it is expensive but it just takes some saving. I can vouch for the Icon line of Jackets, Crevier (sp) helmet (full face) I have the 06 DAytona Retro. This jacket is great for any kind of weather. When it's 100 outside you can still wear it thanks to the vents and it actually keeps the heat away! Hard to believe but it's true. Great stitching, great leather. The Crevier helmet is great also. Keeps the sound out. Good vents. Great view. Now I have to buy motorcycle gear and snowboard gear. Funny thing is they all cost the same! Dammmit, I need another job. I should just sell my cars and ride motorcycle everyday. If only it was possible where I live! | ||

I'm not just a victim of the "gear disease", I'm a carrier and I spread it wherever I go! Seriously, I'm glad to hear you guys are wearing your gear. If 1 person is saved from 1 injury because of the gospel I preach it's all worth it. I have 3 kids myself and i know what you mean. The girls let the dog get ahold of the helmet that they wear on the 4-wheeler. They won't be riding it until I get around to buying another one. I'm not in a hurry either. They know to respect and take care of their gear. I'm making sure that it sticks too! Remember, ATGATT! | ||

funny ...after racing motocross for many years i never thought about riding without good gear....the one time i did a bahama biker i hit a cop car on my rd400 back in the day.....im a great beliver in good gear and wont let my kid on the bike uinless she's suited up....so amen to this its fun once in a while to think about riding without a helmet and i still think it should be my right to choose....but i wear mine..always....i do switch to textile in the summer and dont have racing boots but everything i wear is top notch and has saved my arse more than once. | ||

M_H, I couldn't agree more on the right to choose. The Constitution I studied in no way stated the government had the right to regulate and mandate my personal safety. But you know what my stance is on it  I have mesh gear for truly hot days, with CE armor and a spine protector, An arai helmet, tour master, and Dainese gloves, Sidi boots, and a First gear perforated 2 piece suit that is my mainstay plus an Icon "field armor" spine protector. | ||

Just to add my two cents - I have a full face helmet and joe rocket jacket and gloves, and I always wear the helmet and used to "almost always" wear the jacket - except when it was like 100 degrees. Unfortunately I was thus "almost always" protected, and low sided on a patch of gravel in the street at like 25 mph last year on one of the few times I had no jacket/gloves. I rashed my arms and hands up really bad. Thank goodness for my helmet and boots, both of which had a hole ground in them as I slid down the asphalt, but underneath was protected! I was able to pick it up and ride home, but it was worse than it seemed. I had broken my wrist and my collar bone and ended up with two metal plates in two surgeries. My shoulder and wrist still ache sometimes, and probably will for the rest of my life. If I had a dollar for every time I regret not wearing my jacket and gloves that day, I could afford every motorcycle currently in production.  Now I have a mesh jacket with armor that I wear on those 100+ days. If the thought of surgery, road rash or death doesn't scare you, how about the thought of having to take a crap with both arms and hands completely bandaged up... I'll spare you the details, but some things are worse than death.  | ||

about 4-5 years ago i hit sand in a corner not even going fast..maybe 15-20 mph..i was wearing shorts with a t-shirt and boots. while laying it down i did not even notice i put my leg right on the straight pipes to avoid putting the rest of my body on the road...picked the bike up and went home. nothing hurt due to the adrenalin rush i assume. but once home in the house my leg had 3rd degree burns from top of boot line to my knee. worst pain ive ever felt (so i thought)as it felt like it was burning from the inside. should have went to hospital but i was to stubborn. 2 days later i am watching cartoons w/ my son and he leans into my leg(w/ farmer jeans on) and proceeds to sit down tearing the blisters right off..NOW THAT was the most pain i ever felt. thought i was going to pass out from the pain. i went to the hospital right after that. got some white cream from them that was the best feeling in the world. always wore pants from that day on when on a bike. still have the burn scar to remind me, now i am finding gear. i guess i am a slow learner or just stubborn. but better now than after a bad crash i guess. | ||

Eric - I hit some sand a few weeks ago, mid-turn. Scared the hell out of me, front tire started to wash-out, I guess it was just habit, but I opened the throttle to shift the weight to try to recover.... AND IT WORKED! I think the wheel might have come up an inch or two, but I stayed on the pavement, and I didn't go into the other lane (no traffic anyways), and most importantly, shiny side stayed up (read: wheels stayed down if you have line-x) | ||

  That was my ER Course Group, the BMW and I were probably the smoothest riders there. There were originally 12 ppl, but one of the bikes started spewing oil all over the place (old rebel 450) so I complained (since I just put on new pilot powers last night) and he got sent home. I know, I'm a prick. Anyways, last thing we did was the complete "circuit figure 8", they sent 3 riders at a time, it was me, the BMW, and some old guy on the other bike in the front row. The BMW and I were just RUNNING through the course... what fun. What a beautiful bike he had to, I think it might be my next bike (after I run the lightning to it's grave). | ||

a soldier dosent go onto a battlefield without kevlar and weapons....its actualy mandatory if i remember right even if ur just sitting around on base in a combat zone....well we are at war 24/7 just today i was goin to work to get some $$ someone owes me...quik trip no big deal but i put my coat on my helmet my gloves long pants boots....well i was kinda tired and not really paying attention...looked up and saw a city truck parked with its lights on...thought mm thats weird....the next thing i know im riding in sand somebody lost from a load...all i could think was ,...daaamn im glad i wore my jacket....worked out ok i just slid around for a few seconds and all the cagers got a good show....but it could of been a lot worse..it hurts to have some student nurse wash sand out of ur road rash....ive been there....worst i would of gotten if i went down today would of been a bruised ego. | ||

My problem with the choice to wear a helmet or not, is having to live with the thought of someone dying during an accident I am involved in because they didnt have a helmet on. I spent 8 years as a patrolman, and 5 years as a volunteer emt/fireman, and have seen first hand what brains look like when your skull cracks open. I have also seen the toll it takes on the other folks in the accident, and the family of the rider when I had to go notify them of the tragedy. If you enjoy rocks, bugs, and whatever else zinging off your face and head while you ride, I guess it is your right to have that pleasure. But riding without proper gear and crashing affects many others besides yourself. | ||

I agree with you too Lorazepam. I think everyone should ride wear full gear! Been there, done that with regards to crash scenes. I'd love to never see that kind of thing again. I just dispute the governments right to legislate what gear must be worn for my personal safety. The government has begun to believe that they, as a group, know what's best for everyone. I don't want to live in a "Nanny State". If we allow small freedoms to be whittled away that's where we're headed. I'm a strict interpretation kind of guy. Probably a side effect of being a machinist and building parts to spec, not what i thought would be best for the customer, because I didn't know what the customer's intent was with the part. I'd make suggestions in my notes, but that's it. If the government would make recommendations instead of laws I'd be right on board with that. That's not how they operate though. | ||

I am a total believer in gear, even though it may be embarrassing some times. I still remember in the late 80's (I could've have been a squid...) wearing those shiny little nylon shorts, t-shirt, and sandals while riding my motorcycle. Had many falls, none too serious, but the road rash was terrible! I remember my first crash, when a cager turned in front of me, and I landed on the other side of the car. When I got up, bleeding from my arms, legs, and feet, the only thing I cared was my bike's "health". When I saw the bent front forks, I started crying like a "sissy", but not for my road rash. That took a few hours... taking a shower was painful!!  So, no jokes about the crying part...  | ||
