New to the board. Been hanging around here for a while but couldn't figure out how to start a new thread til today. I didn't see it at the bottom of the page lol. I bought my wife a 2001 Blast last month and she loves the bike. The shifter arm is too long for her though so I'm gonna modify that this week. The bars are too high and I'm gonna see if I can get a set off a Lightning, Bandit, or FZ1 or something similar. And when she starts off for the first ride of the day just as she's letting the clutch out and pulling out of the driveway the bike makes a loud "knocking" sound. It only does it once when the bike has been off for a day or so. After that it's fine. But then don't touch it for a day. Start it up, let it warm up and then when she go to leave "knock" "knock" "knock". This familiar with anyone? And it also seems to use quite a bit of oil. Like 1/2 litre for 1000km Is this normal? |

Get superbike bars from Chapperal - inexpensive and you can cut the arm shorter and add a toe peg - easy - the knock - let idle for a bit longer if not run everyday, and get a little further into the rpms on take off - she's lugging it - thus the sounds. Oil usage during breakin is alot - aka - normal - lol GT - JBOTDS! EZ |

Wow thanks for the quick reply. I was thinking it was something to do with the bike being cold cause it only does it in the morning. Rest of the day it's fine. And after break in what would be considered normal for oil consumption? All of the bikes I've owned hardly went down a drop between oil changes. So this is a first for me but then again it's the first Harley/Buell product I've owned. Where would I find those bars from? Is there alot involved in changing them or will everything just swap over pretty easy? |

Prozac, The bars that oyu are looking for are made be Bikemaster, I've found that the superbike bend is the mot comfortable for me. http://www.powersportrider.com/cgi-bin/zcatjpg http://www.bikebandit.com/partsbandit/productlist~section_dept_id~1170244~terrai n_dept_id~1171505~cat_dept_id~1171561~product_dept_id~1171568~selection_Path~3.a sp The bars are a bolt-on deal Normal oil consumption is about a quart in-between oil changes. More if you ride hard in high temperatures. James |

Thanks everyone for the quick replies. This is truely a great site. I'm very relieved about the oil consumption being normal. I'm gonna get bars as soon as possible and probably gonna shorten her shifter tomorrow. Is there anything to do to reduce the oil consumption? |

Break the bike in per the manual. After that, a qt between oil changes is pretty normal for a Blast engine. |

ive been using about 2 oz roughly, per 100 miles. this seems fair enough. sometimes higher durring high speed but word around the board is thats normal. what does everyone else get ? |

O... also I was wondering if I could do damage by running 90+ with a stock blast for too long. or even 85 + for doo long I dont like to live there I only do it if I need to move on the freeway. from what I understand the rev limiter is like the red line is it ok to live anywhere below the rev limiter ? |

Yep, it's okay to live anywhere below the rev-limite, jusy keep an eye on the oil level. A day with 100+ miles at 85+ will pull the oil level way down. |

NJB: I havent used any (not a measurable amount anyway) oil in about 1700 miles since I did the top end and the pcv is not in any way connected to the carb intake! |

Also, any high-RPM riding. You don't necessarily have to hit 85 to hit high revs, a good spirited ride through some twisties will do it just fine. Given that I spit more on my commute, but still. lol... I've also found that my gas mileage goes down, down, down when I'm commuting. Just noticed today when I had to hit reserve at 90 miles, as opposed to the 130ish I made (twice!) going the back way to SLO... That's all, just found it interesting. |

Oh great, here I go again. I read all the engine knock symptoms & all though I've had (& still have when hot)the typical "knocking & pinging" pulling away from a stop in first,a mechanic (not Buell or H-D)told me I have what could be yet another serious problem. After riding my bike, he stated something about a loose wrist-pin and noise.I told him it sounded the same to me,until he leaned my head over to the left side of the bike where the "tack-tack-tack-tack" noise that sounded in unison with the movement of the normal "thump-thump-thump". It seems to be centered at the base of the cylinder mostly left side. He said it sounded as if someone had ridden it VERY hard. I ride mostly highway at 65-70mph. He said it could be from switching to synth that did it. I say he's crazy. When my intake boot gave out 2 hours from home,I did manage to ride it all the way back. Could this have done it? The noise is NOT audible unless you lean in to the engine, & it follows the movement of the piston perfectly.Fast, slow, idle. I'm about to dump this thing into a swamp. |

Adjust your primary, retard your timing 2 degrees and such noise should disapear, if not - I wouldn't worry about it unless it affects performance - singles and twins of the HD variety especially have a lot of weird noises that goes with the engine - heck when I first got my head back the sound of the titanium valves against the steel head was loud compared to stock and I thought she was going to blow up any second, now I take it in stride and am in tune with the engines new sounds - relax its probably nothing. Thank you EZblast & for the part #s Jprovo! I got back from running errands today with none of the take off sputtering or the "tack-tack" noise. Yesterday it was in the 90s here in Florida & I got back from a 70 mile round trip at a fairly steady 65-70mph with some heavy city traffic in town when this guy made the comment. My trans is probably fairly dry from the for-mentioned clutch cover leak. (I ordered the parts today. (Of course they don't have them) The parts guy asked "what is this thing?" Thanks guys I feel much better! |

Flrider: There was some debate about a Sportster shifter lever working on the Blast and I am actually using a Storz XL shifter lever, but what year XL lever are you using? |

Gearhead, I am using the same year as my Blast,02. It seems that lever is used for 97-current,from what I noticed as I walked around a used sportster lot measuring different levers (xl883 or 1200 with standard controls)against mine. Works well if you wear boots, sneakers not so well. It is 2 inches shorter than stock and you must trim the rubber washer by half. It will not come loose & fall off like the stock one! Hows the stortz shifter? Do you know of any pegs that will fit the stock slots? |

The Storz is actually mounted backwards (reverse shift pattern) for rear sets, but would work just as well forward. Its about an inch shorter (and $100!) I dont know of any footpegs that fit, but EZ might. |

The other Buell pegs should fit - just looking at them. GT - JBOTDS! EZ |

Re: KNOCKING/PINGING. I just starting riding a 2002 with 7K miles. The owner history suggested it was well taken care of. So, when I started noticing the the knocking/pinging when taking off I thought it was a timing problem. First, I tried higher octane gas -- no difference. To my amazement the Blast specialist at my dealership (he maintains all the dealer's Blasts used for their Riders' Edge program) simply said it sounded normal, although on the way home today, after heating up a bit, there it was again - PING PING when I started up from a stop! BUMMER -- or so I thought -- UNTIL I got home and discovered the following on page 66 of the Owner's Manual: "IGNITION TIMING...NOTE: The ignition module of Blast Models has two spark timing advance curves controlled by the throttle position. In certain transient load conditions, as the throttle is opened, the timing is changed from normal to fully advanced causing an instant pressure rise in the combustion chamber as the spark advances rapidly which may result in a noise that is similar to detonation ("knocking"). "This condition is normal and should not be confused with detonation, which can be stopped by the use of a higher grade fuel. This condition does not affect engine performance or durability." It sounds like EZBlast has it nailed. It's a sound that many of us have heard and it freaks us out like the other sounds. I guess I just gotta get used to the freaky, noisy sounds this power plant produces. For most of us this User Guide Ignition Note should be the end of it -- just ignore it -- of give it higher revs on start up. I guess a really great Blast specialist should have known to to mention this when owners complain of "pinging." Relieved? I am. (Message edited by bitbear on July 04, 2006) |
