Hi, my first post here...

I was thinking to install better breathing -06 airbox and K&N filter to my stock -05 bike.
My question is: is the stock ECM capable of adjusting to improved breathing automatically?
What if I add F.A.S.T intake mod as well?

Is it worth it?

Thanks in advance...

First, welcome to Badweb

Second, you can just "open" your existing air box by cutting holes in it with a hole saw or dremel.
That will save you $35 or so.

whether or not the ecu can keep up is hotly debated. Some people run open air boxes and an
aftermarket pipe on their bike with the stock ECM. Others (I'm in this camp) think it's way too
risky. for the price of an ECM you risk losing the motor. Doesn't make sense to ME.

I believe you would be better off (since it looks like you intend to incrementally mod your bike)
going the direct-link route where the stock ecm gets re-programmed. That way you can adjust
the bike to deal with future mods. I recommend you talk to Al at American Sport Bike about
this option. He and Terry (Buelldyno_guy) are the guys in the know with this system.

The FAST system was designed to be used with an aftermarket pipe and should be used with
either the direct-Link, TFI, PC3, megasquirt, or even the race ecm.

i have the FAST kit and a jardine. ran with a stock ecm for a little while till i found out how LEAN my bike was running. that threw up the red flag "DANGER..DANGER WILL ROBINSON!!!" BAD COMBANATION !!!..i now have the DIRECT LINK and it runs like an animal!!! the map used was for the A.S.B. air mod w/ jardine and although not perfect it was closer than anything out at the time. this sunday it is being put on the dyno for some tuning and will hopefully be dead on i hope by the end of the day. i would HIGHLY recAmend speaking w/ AL at American Sport Bike. he is an AWSUME guy! i alsways learn something when i call there....problem w/ calling is i usually buy something as well.check profile if you want to see the kit.

K&N Filter with stock ecm makes bike run hot per pulling & checking plugs.

I've replaced my plugs and gone back to the paper filter.

Your 05 inner air-box should have the down facing "nipple" - if not, then it is worth the $35 for a new one.

Thanks for the answers!

Yes, sounds good. Unfortunately two of my favourite mufflers
(Buell race & Latus) are currently discontinued, so I have to delay
the decision on which can to get... : ( (It's about the looks, btw ;) )
Meanwhile I'm going with the modest modifications...

Uhm, what's the purpose of this nipple...?

It improves the air flow. dyno testing shows 1/2 to 2 hp improvement by adding this
$35 part. That's CHEAP hp! And a good upgrade for the 03-04 xb9 owners. 05 and up
all of the xb models got this from the factory. They keep a close eye on what the
owners are doing with their bikes;)

The "nipple" air box cover was a design improvement implemented with the XB12 bikes FWIW
