I'm pretty comfortable working on my bikes now, but this is beyond anything I've done before.

Thus far I've got gotten the engine rotated down (for something unrelated - replacing exhaust seals) and the primary cover off, and now I'm stymied at how to actually remove the primary chain.

According to the manual, I need to remove the primary drive and clutch assembly as one, so I've got some questions.

I do not have any of the specialized tools for removing a clutch drum safely.

1) Is there any other way to accomplish this, or do I really need those tools?

2) What parts do I need to replace (and thus order) as a part of this process? Snap rings, retainers, etc.

3) Do I need an impact wrench to loosen the primary drive? How do you lock the gears to keep it from turning with the wrench?

Any tips, tricks, and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You really need the tool you wedge in the middle to keep it from turning. I ended up making something that would fit in there. When I did it I had to buy a new gaskets. Don't forget to



It was a pita for me because I had to keep going to the auto parts store for tools I didn't have. If you have all the tools and some the FSM you should be ok.

I've already got the appropriate gaskets on order from Daves, I'm more worried about parts internal to the drive/clutch assembly that may be 'one-time use only'.

I'm hoping someone in my family has the clutch puller, I'd really hate to have to go buy something that I'll only use once (hopefully!).

Only things I had to buy or get was the sockets and the wedge tool. A needle nose will pull out the retaining ring.

There is no clutch puller needed. Loosen both nuts and it should slide out easy.

Only thing you need is a new gasket for the cover. I reused the rest of the parts.

Hmm...maybe I'm making this more complicated than it needs to be, since I don't need to disassemble the clutch, just remove it entirely.

Is the primary drive nut right-hand thread? The diagram showing placement of the locking wedge would seem to indicate so, but I don't recall actually seeing mention of it.
