After riding (engine warm/hot) when I coast back into the garage, I hear a "clicking" type noise coming from the primary. I am not sure if its the chain or the adjustment, I checked the primary chain tensioner adjustment, unsure completely if it is too loose or too tight, no box of rocks sound and no drop at high speeds. Any ideas?? Thx Kat |

I forgot to add a few things............left side and it is when I have it in 1st gear and the clutch pulled in...maybe clutch adjustment needed?? |

just got back from my clutch cable replacement from the shop, they changed the primary oil too...now the primary area whines, kinda like a turbo.. Is this because the primary is too tight? should i be concerned about this? or will it go away ? thanks |

It's too tight. The way I set it is to loosen it up, then tighten it flat by flat until the idle starts to drop, then back it off a flat or two... |

other than wearing down the teflon, will it do anything else? should i loosen it a flat or two or leave it? |

Re-do it the way James described and you'll be fine! GT - JBOTDS! EZ |

to tight primary chain will cause cause excessive wear on chain, engine, trans and clutch bearings. |

when you use the torque wrench, do you start it up and get it warm or just do it without starting it (and warming it up)? Also why does the manual give the wrong settings for this? just curious? |

The manual doesn't say anything about starting the bike, so I ASSuMEd that it was with the engine off. I don't think they would have left that out if it was necessary. I don't know why the factory setting seems tight. My guesses are: 1: The setting came from a dry primary and the trans lube affects the tourque setting 2: The technique only checks one spot, and the tightest spot may not be where the engine naturally stops when you turn it off. 3: The settings a typo, and no one has investigated it, because no-one has reported it. (I know I'm guilty of this) James |

I'm getting a very lite clicking noise from the left side and a lot more false neutrals then I used too lately. First gear has also sounded rougher when being shifted to then normal. Could this be from a loose primary or is it something else? |

Yes - adjust primary, then perhaps if shifting isn't back totally - adjust clutch at primary. GT - JBOTDS! EZ |

Adjust the primary and if that doesn't do it adjust the shifter pawl. And when you are in there adjusting the shifter pawl, check the detent bolt that holds the shifter drum locking plate in place, and champher the edges of the stator wire retaining plate and goober some silicone under the plate to keep the wires from moving. |

Knocking Noise/At Speed Powerloss I have just recently purchased my 2003 Blast, first bike, and am absolutely loving it. But I have been experiencing a few problems/oddities with the bike that I wouldn't expect considering it has under 2500 miles on it. After spending about 5 weeks reading through this site I have not been able to completely narrow what is going on; something I'd like to do before I start to dismantle the boy... Just like what was mentioned before I have a knocking from the bottom of my bike, but only with the engine pulling lightly-to-just below full throttle and at an upwards of 30mph. I tightened the primary chain with the running method (factory spacer was still on) with little results. What could it be? Secondly, the bike also **intermittently** loses power when I'm accelerating in 3rd, 4th or 5th, with no change in engine speed. I did a clutch adjustment through the primary case door and it worked for a bit, but the "slipping" soon returned. Do I need to preform a clutch replacement? Could the clanking be the result of a worn out shoe? Are the problems related? <- They seem like they are at their worst when happening together. |

You removed the spacer - correct? |

Yes, I removed it and tightened the bolt about 1/4" inward. I clearly heard the bike drop rpm and backed it out 1 flat. But the sound persists, possibly less powerful but still very present. It only occurs while I'm driving |

Take it out a few more flats - so no sound at idle/neutral? - does it sound like a rattling noise? If yes to both a minor timing adjustment may be in order, but first replace Das Boot! EZ (Message edited by ezblast on July 24, 2008) |

Thanks for the quick response EZ, always on point. There is no sound at neutral, does that rule out chain tension? I can feel the rattle through the engine and case, but not through the frame. It's hard to tell considering the position I have to place myself in while moving 40 mph. |

It could well be a simple timing adjustment. EZ |

Welcome Bluetuna! Are you sure its not footpegs or normal valvetrain noise? Make sure clutch and cable are adjusted properly. And 'Das boot'! |

"...loses power when I'm accelerating in 3rd, 4th or 5th, with no change in engine speed. I did a clutch adjustment..." If the clutch was slipping, the revs would go way up. The other thing could be oan overly-loose primary, since it does it under load, whuich is when the bottom side of the chain is slack. You could re-adjust using an inch/pound wrench and the 8 flats (about 1.5 turns) method, but if that didn't work then I'd open it up and check the spring on the shoe. |

Thank you for the welcome. Its definitely not a normal operating noise, much to metallic and powerful...and intermittent. I think at this point my only option is to open it up and poke around. Any advice/warnings on the difficulty of opening up the primary? I previously unleashed half my trans oil onto my garage floor during the first clutch adjustment... should have seen that one coming |
