I'll try to keep this story short. Was on the way to the lake to spend the day on the boat when i pulled up on a motorcycle accident scene.It had obviously just happened(no police, ems.etc)I'm now a volunteer firefighter and the guy that was with me is also one and a EMT. We get out and there is a guy lying on his back half in the road half on the shoulder. He was awake, breathing, and somewhat alert..Guy was wearing.....SHORTS, T-SHIRT, Sneakers that weren't tied and motocross gloves!! Completely covered in Road rash(a lot of spots were worn down to the bone)One shoe came off and he scraped the skin off a few toes....He claimed he was doing 45mph and hit a bump....we all think he was doing something reckless.... but can't prove it check out this pic and you tell me how fast he was going.....if you look at the top of the screen you will see people standing...thats were he landed..about 100 feet away  had to bring a helicopter in to bring him to the hospital......i even asked one of the kids riding with them why they weren't wearing proper gear...he said they have jackets at home......i just shoke my head and walked away...guess some people learn the hard way | ||

Holy christ, he definitley mashed up that telephone pole! What kinda bike is that anyways, I can't even seem to distinguish it what-so-ever. Shit did the forks get ripped off the frame?!? | ||

bike was a gsxr anniversary edition...Yup thats the front end...the 4 throttle boddies even came off the bike and there are pieces of plastic in the trees | ||

Glad you were there to help. He was lucky it was not a bus full of girl scouts. Can you imagine how much all that Bactine would sting? BTW I did not know the aniversary edition Gixer came with a quick release front end..... Learn something new everyday. | ||

Bob, Holy cow. Where was this? I know if it was me and I came upon that I would probably be upchucking most of strawberry waffles I had for breakfast over the poor guy. How as the lake, I had a nice uneventful ride up to Utica HD and then a couple runs through the Ilion gorge. | ||

thats one lucky sumnabitch to be alive...funny it was hot in washington today and i have a black nexx i wear most of time..i was sweatin bullets..but i remember my road rash well....i went home got my rocket ...still hot but better....i think id rather sweat a little than have some student nurse flush my road rash out with saline again...damn asfault pebbles hurt commin out....i agre with the 45 thing thats a long way to slide for goin 45....its a shame every time u see this...too much power not enough skill = salvage gixxer for sale...not much left of that one though..summer time brings out all the fair weather bikers....then they go down....thats one lucky kid there. | ||

I will have to say that going down isn't that great. Feel for the kid. I just went down the other day. Lowsided into some trees. The Uly came out 100% better then that and I was doing about 50 when I hit the ground. I was in helmet, jacket, gloves, boots and jeans. Ended up with a sore neck, bruised knee and scraped up wrist. nothing major but was in gear. Showed me why I wear what I do. Have pants and will most likely start wearing 100% of the time also. I wish the kid well and hope others will learn form it. See the bahama attire on bikes all the time. best is when the helmet is straped to the back lights! | ||

I hear that Buelltoys. I see it all the time here.. People don't realize, Accidents are accidents for a reason. And stupidity, is well.. just plain stupidity. Most accidents are caused by just sheer stupidity and showing off. I paid a bunch for my new riding gear. And I plan on wearing it to keep in this world. I love my life. And I dont' want to become a statistic of motorcycle crashes. Thanks.  | ||

-=shakes head=- Some people...he's lucky to be alive, hopefully he'll have the scars to remind how dumb he was for a very long time. They're working hard to institute adult choice here in Michigan when it comes to helmets. I say fine, whatever (hey, they are adults, they can make their own choices)...but let me sign a damned waiver saying that I always wear a helmet (in addition to all other appropriate gear - gloves, jacket, boots) and my insurance had better not go up ONE DAMNED CENT because of it. | ||

yes he did have a helmet(icon) and it was banged up but still intact. I don't know who the kid was or where he was from so i probably won't know the status of him. I know the helicopter was on the ground awhile before they took off so i guess thats a good thing..He took a hard lick to the head. He knew his name and where he was but every once and awhile he would ask the same questions. Patrick we where out in Columbia county near Kinderhook lake...It happened right in front of a horse farm. Took the rescue squad and Ambulance awhile to get there.....I WOULD ASK ALL OF YOU GUYS TO CONSIDER VOLUNTEERING FOR YOUR LOCAL FIRE/EMS DEPARTMENTS!!Especially those you you who live in rural areas....I know numbers are down here in NY....there was a story about how it took 45 min for an ambulance to show up to an accident in a local rural town one day!! Great link Buellshyter. looks like something that might be on my list of future upgrades to my gear. That suit would keep the armor exactly where it belongs, all the time. And i wouldn't feel unprotected wearing blue jeans. | ||

I'm not sure if it would have helped this guy, but I really think MSF courses should be mandatory for a license. I'd be willing to bet that the unfortunate rider in this accident was well under 25 years of age. Although, it is mostly older guys on Harleys that I see in shorts, t-shirt, and flip-flops. Of course, they are not usually the ones showing off like the guys on the gixxers. | ||

I learned some things from the msf course, BUT, I think that they need to go over certain things at speeds exceeding 15mph. There is no way that some people in my class who had never riden before were ready for street riding by themselves. | ||

Eric, I agree, my biggest disappointment with the MSF course was the lack of training on crash avoidance maneuvers. There should be an entire course dedicated to this!!! | ||

MSF does warn you about "target fixation", and the telephone pole in the photo sure looks like a likely candidate for that. | ||

I am planning on taking the experienced class in the near future, and maybe even the instructor class when I'm 18. Cut them insurance rates.  | ||

There is only so much we can teach in the course before it becomes absolute information overload given our average time allotment. Also, finding a range that would be suitable for extended manuevers above 15mph would be difficult, not to mention that new students wouldn't have the confidence to perform such manuevers and actually learn (fear block). Back on topic, all I can do is shake my head in pity. Given that it was a straight section something like that is uncalled for unless there was a mechanical issue. I can't say I've ever randomly had a wreck on a straight section of road. Can anyone else? The fact that they had gear and chose not to wear it just shows absolute stupidity on their part. I see cases like this way too much. |
