I'm trying to find an inexpensive way of getting GPS for my bike. I like the google maps system and see that theres a way of getting it on your palm. http://www.palminfocenter.com/view_story.asp?ID=8021 Anyone know what you have to do to a palm to get GPS or Map software to work? I have access to a zire palm but dont know what else to do. | ||

There are quite a few cable, cradle and Bluetooth GPS accessories for Palms. However, I do not see that KMaps (the software you linked) is intended to be used with a GPS, nor does it seem to be used for directions. I have a Palm TungstenT ($60 on eBay) with a Magellan m500 GPS cradle ($60 new, I don't know if it's still sold) and I run Mapopolis software ~$100 tho I believe there are cheaper software packages. | ||

I have a Palm T3 and I use TomTom's bluetooth GPS software. I love the software, but one annoying thing is that to charge the bluetooth receiver, I have to connect it to the Palm cradle. I just wished someone made a cable that I could charge it using a 12v outlet, just like the T3. | ||

First and foremost, make sure your PDA can accept a GPS device. There are PDA's with GPS built in but Zire isn't one of them. Second, select the type of map software you want to use. To my knowledge, Google maps don't integrate with GPS. GPS devices all come with map software but you don't have to feel stuck with what they give you. Personally, I use a Toshiba E740 Pocket PC with a CF-type Pharos GPS. I mounted it myself to the upper triple-clamp using some 3M double sided foam tape and a mount that I built myself from parts of 2 different cell phone mounts purchased at Radio Shack.     I programmed the front panel buttons to control the most commonly used features. I carry different SD memory cards with extra maps. This system isn't what I would call "pretty" but I had this thing kicking around my garage, not getting used since it runs an older operating system version and can't be upgraded. But one thing it does very well is run this map software and having it on the bike keeps it fully charged. It's held in place with some good velcro and I can just tear it off and go map trails with it on foot! I couldn't bring myself to spend another $1000 or so on a new one when I already had this and it has served me well. It also has 802.11B wireless built in so when I stop at most coffee houses I can get my email and check BadWeb! And I can dump my camera photos into it with infra-red, bluetooth, or USB! Pwnzor, 1 quick question, how do you load more maps and use the gps at the same time? My pocket pc only has 1 sd slot... so i can only use the gps adapter or put in an SD card... only one at a time. Thanks. | ||

this PDA has both an SD and Compact Flash slot. The reason I bought it in the first place, it was one of the first to integrate wi-fi and had both slots. A 256MB SD card holds California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. On my other PDA I carry the main artery maps for the rest of the country and also a topographical mapping program which lets me see existing trails and add my own to state and federal parklands and backcountry areas. I can transfer maps back and forth but I haven't had to yet. It's all there, just in case. |
