I want to add a cigarette lighter type charger so I can plug in a GPS or cell phone charger or whatever... anyone have recommendations on the best/easiest way? I have no experience w/ electrical work on bikes... should I even attempt this or will I screw something up |

I drilled a hole opposite of the ignition switch on my 12S, slapped one in there. West Marine has the outlet in stainless. |

What wires did you connect it to? Thanks. |

I ran a fused(10amp)wire from the battery to the outlet, grounded it on the headlight mount. I want it hot all the time. |

Did you splice a wire into the fuse box, or did you connect a wire directly to the battery, put a fuse on that wire, then run it to the front? Thanks again... I should look for a diagram or something huh. |

I went directly to the battery, with a 14 amp fuse, and heavy insulated wire. Ken |

You can also try (I have no affiliation) http://www.powerletproducts.com/ They have kits for specific bike models and some generic versions. I've ordered from them with good results and they are very helpful in helping determine exactly what you need. HTH Mike |

Ok, so there is no problem drawing power directly from the battery? Thanks, this should be my last question, heh. |

Gamdh, thanks for that site... I am going to use the one that will "Convert your Battery Tender pigtail to a Powerlet socket. Approx 4" long." |

No problem... I really like them. They have custom made a few things for me as well.. they do nice work. As for drawing power directly from the battery.. I had 2 outlets wired directly to the battery on my 950.. used them to power the GPS and XM radio. My Uly already comes with 2 plugs...but I may see if these guys can make a replacement that used the bmw style sockets as they are more secure than the cigerette type. |

Another strong recommendations for Powerlet. We're using Powerlet/BMW sockets and plugs for GPS/XM/FRS power with good success on our Beemers (sockets added at front of bike, in addition to OE sockets in starter cover). If you panel-mount the socket, then plugging in while underway is a possibility. The BMW-type plug is well suited for motorcycle use. Powerlet supplies an in-line SAE fuse for direct attachment to battery... makes install easy, as long as you don't drain battery leaving gizmos running all night. Bought extra socket kits for the Buell - heated vest in cold weather and XM radio. The Powerlet handlebar mount socket is pretty cool, but expensive. I'd go for a really clean install... Get one of these: http://www.centechwire.com/catalog/panels/ap1.shtml and the appropriate GPS hardwire powercord from http://www.gpsdiscount.com and the appropriate GPS mount - get a locking MVG version http://www.touratech-usa.com/shop/navigation.lasso?-session=touratech:05716D402B A8F3F7F136D8F33216864A Good luck... |
