i removed the belt guards from my '06 xb9sx since i think the bike looks better the more "naked" it is. I was concerned at first that the belt might "jump" the rear pulley, but have since read some threads about grime, dirt and debris eating away at the belt without the guards on.

So, is removing the belt guards a bad idea? I see lots of pictures without the guards on (and again, i think it looks so much better without the "plasticky" dopey guards on), does anyone have any advice?

The warranty only covers the belt if the guards are in place. If you are out of warranty, than you probably only have to worry about shortened belt life.

I took the belt off my 9R. I think it looks a lot better. But I only rode my bike on the track. Haven't had any problems with it removed, I even have original belt on the bike.

Does you bike go faster at the track without it's belt?

Without a belt? That's pretty funny, I'm "sure" he meant belt guard but I just came up with an image in my head of someone trying to take off on a bike without a belt! Varoooooom! Wait a minute?

He might be on to something there... you can save a lot of rotating mass if you remove the belt!

I have heard two dieerent stories from two reputable sources regarding the need for belt guards. Given what I have seen riding in bad weather both with and without I think Buell Guru number one was probally right. No need for them except to apease insurance comapnies.

Besides the belt guard does not protect the surface between the idler pulley and the belt.
