Is there any difference between the XB9 & XB12 race kit mufflers? On the Buell site they offer polished and unpolished mufflers - supposedly they fit all 03-later XB models except the XB12X (Ulysses). Is this correct? Are they in fact the same as far as external dimensions are concerned? The reason I ask is I am trying to fit a silver/ceramic XB9 race muffler to a 2006 XB12R and the right outlet is fouling the belt idler wheel. Very frustrating. |

The reason I ask is I am trying to fit a silver/ceramic XB9 race muffler to a 2006 XB12R and the right outlet is fouling the belt idler wheel. Very frustrating. I gave one of my Buell Race cans to New12r, and he had the same problem. It seems the "old style" cans were shorter than the newer race cans. This probably doesn't help you much I know, but, New12r has been using this can for over a year now with no issues. He may have had to dent the exhaust outlet a little to get it to clear the pulley, but I'm not sure. |

The difference isn't between the XB9 and XB12 race mufflers, or between the matte and polished mufflers. It is between the early 03 race mufflers and the 04 and later race mufflers. The dimensions were revised when the new belt drive system was released. All 03 mufflers were Matte silver. However, not all matte silver mufflers are the old dimensions. Al |

That would explain it - thanks. The guy I bought the muffler from had an '03 XB so it must have been an early race kit muffler. All I need now is a solution to this rather annoying problem. I don't like the idea of denting the exhaust outlet but I may have no choice. Trouble is it also doesn't sit snugly up against the rear U bracket under the engine. I may have to find a way to pack it up a bit. |

I traded my 03 muffler with someone who put it on a 12R. We used a small metal spacer between the bracket the muffler so the exhaust tip would sit lower just under the pulley. Since nothing moves it worked out fine. I don't remember what we used as a spacer though. He has been using the pipe for over a year now, and is having no problems. If you do go the spacer route, you have to make sure you don't overtighten the mounting band, because it will just bend the muffler around the space and pull it all the way up into the pulley. The metal on the muffler bends really easily. |

Thanks. As an alternative, I'm thinking of getting a welder to cut off and re-weld the muffler outlets so they face 45 degrees down and thus clear the idler wheel. |

I used some brake pad shims between the muffler and the rear mount and then I still had to Dent the outlet some, you cannot see the dent unless you are looking. |

I think the 04 and later 12's also have larger headers. 1.75" The 9's have 1.50" headers which means you'll have a little difference at the inlet connection. |

Nope, inlet size is the same. |

I've decided to have a welder modify the outlets. He said he may replace the outlets with drummer/special ops -style stainless steel outlets pointing 45 degrees down and back. But now I am worried about the internal difference between the 12 race muffler and old-style 9 muffler I have. Could my 9 muffler be more restrictive and thus not work well on a 12 with a race ECM? |
