been doing some great riding up here in maine the past few days, and ive noticed that my 2000 Blast will have some funky sounds at certain RPM's. at first the sound is like a crunching sound or like a marble(just one) playing high speed pinball in the engine. it happens at somewhat higher RPM's, usually in 2nd gear at about 30mph and around 45 mph in 3rd, sounds like you are just at the spot where you should shift, but dont necessarily have to. other than that it is running fine, when RPM's are low you dont hear this sound. Its not like the knocking or pinging that i'm used to in a car, but then again, this is a totally different machine. I've been putting high test in it ever since i got it a couple months ago, been thru about 7 fill ups. changed the oil about 500 miles ago, as well as trans fluid. so is this normal or am i riding on borrowed time? thanks in advance guys and girls dave |

"like a marble(just one) playing high speed pinball in the engine" that's how I would describe the sound of detonation. "it happens at somewhat higher RPM's, usually in 2nd gear at about 30mph and around 45 mph in 3rd, sounds like you are just at the spot where you should shift, but dont necessarily have to" it's possible that those are conditions where fuel demand is relatively high (although demand should pretty much just get higher the faster you go). the 2000 has a smaller main jet, which could give a lean mixture when demand is high, which could cause detonation. another (more likely?) possibility would be an air leak that occurs when vacuum is high and/or engine vibration hits a certain frequency - remove the rubber boot that connects the carb to the intake manifold and make sure it isn't split or cracked. aside from that, it could be an leak into the carb itself, or between the manifold and the head. ...can a tube with only one inlet and one outlet really be called a "manifold"? |

Detonation = Pinging/knocking. I describe it as two skeletons F-ing in a tin can.... Check you timing and primary chain. There was also a bulletin for 2000/2001 Blasts on making sure that the TPS was set right. Check Here: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show.cgi?tpc=20164&post=220484#POS T220484 |
