So I went n bought a new battery 2 days ago. Was tired of holding my breath every time I went to start it up wondering if I was gonna hear that awful grind/clicking sound. Worked fine for 2 days fired up first try every time. Today I go to start it for work n what do I hear but that awful grinding. So I'm just guessing that SOMETHING is shorted or melted somewhere and this is more than likely the same short/melt that has blown 200$ worth of headlights. Any ideas were to start looking? |

Did you put the new battery on a charger before using ??? Get yourself a trickle charger, when not riding keep on the trickle charger !!! |

Pull the primary inspection cover and take a whiff. Smell burned popcorn? If so, it's your stator... |

Best bet is to get the service manual, and follow the directions for checking stator output, current draw, regulator bleed, and the whole nine yards. Best to follow that before replacing components. Hope this helps, Chris |

It was the voltage regulator. Replaced HOPEFULLY under warranty. Thnx to all who chimed in. |

That could explain the blown headlights as well. It probably damaged the battery over time as well, so that money was not wasted. |

Was spiking up to almost 17 volts. Some time next week or so I'm taking it in for a dyno run. |

Anyone know what the normal output voltage is for an X-1 while it is at an idle? My meter is reading 12.45 to 12.50. Would that be sufficient to charge a battery? I just bought an aftermarket battery off e-bay and rode 100mi. I let the bike sit for 4 days and got the god awful clicking noise when I tried to start it. |

RR: I think it needs to be up around 13.5 to charge. Did you check the output at higher engine RPM's? CHeck this out from the Knowledge Vault: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show.cgi?tpc=3842&post=247836#POST 247836 Sorry I missed the crawfish boil... rt |

Thanks rt will check at higher rpm then start further diagnostics. |
