I bought my Race Kit today from Dave at Buell of Appleton. Thanks Dave!!  The Service Manual says you need to remove the idler pulley in order to remove the muffler. Is this correct or can it be worked around? It also says that you should replace the front muffler strap and the clamp that holds the muffler to the header. Can these be reused or do they absolutely have to be replaced? Thanks, Schmitty | ||

you do not need to remove the pulley to install the muffler. yes you can re-use the clamps at your own risk. i personally like "new" hardware when i install something | ||

It can be worked around. I used a long extension w/ universal joint and deep socket to loosen the rear straps. I didn't replace my front strap, although a few guys have posted that their front straps broke. Just don't over-tighten when you put the new muffler on. | ||

just replaced my exhaust this weekend. i worked around the pully. you need a 7/16th deep socket with extention. the stock exhaust is easy to remove..... | ||

Let me tell you my trick. I just removed the front pulley cover, and Walla! the nuts on the clamps are right there. All you need is an extension. BTW the front pulley cover takes about 1 min to remove and the same to install. | ||

Don't sweat the pully either, it comes off and goes back on really easily. I was going to work around it, and after cutting up my knuckles I went back to my milk crate for a sit and asked my self "how much effort should I be putting in to avoid removing two nuts?" Once you pull it off you can clean it all up as well. It's a beautifully made part. | ||

Oh, and with regards to the front mount. A great many people have reused the front clamp (which is the one they say to replace) with no problems. One person (and there were other circumstances) reused the front clamp, and as a result slid a long way on top of a $1000 digital SLR, and stopped his slide via a compound fracture of his elbow. (confession time, the one on my bike is reused, but I have a new one sitting on the shelf beside it that I mean to install really soon now  ). So the answer to the "should I reuse the mount" is: "Sure. It hardly ever breaks in the middle of a hard turn and launches you through the guardrail". :0 | ||

Reepi, I choose to remove my pulley but found I had to back the rear axel off (18?) turns to get the pulley back on. Do you have a better method? | ||

You only need to replace the FRONT clamp. When doing an exhaust swap. Retighten the front band clam to the same specs as the rear two...your good to go. | ||

I don't remember how many turns to get the axle out far enough.. I have a big ratchet so it was not a big deal. | ||

You don't need to remove the idler pulley, your just making more work for yourself. Remove the front sprocket cover, and the strap nuts are right in plain sight. I used as extension, didn't even need a universal joint. | ||

hey guys, i just did this also and did not have to remove the pulley. the bolts are right there and you can actually put the socket and extension through one of the holes in the idler...i counted the number of threads showing before loosening the nuts on the straps so i knew how much to tighten them when i put them back. The EconoDrummer is out of this world btw. | ||

what does one do with the servo cable after installing the race muffler??? btw, is this also the clamp that needs replacing? Even on an 05 bike with just 2000 miles on it?  | ||

I took the cable off the bike. I also reused the clamp, being very careful not to over-tighten it. | ||

Skip the Idle puller removal. I did only because I could not get little %@&! off of my bike. I wasted a whole afternoon trying to get it off. And before yall yell @ me I did lossen the rear axle. I even removed the axle and wheel. That little bugger would not move. I hope It never has to be replaced. One thing you do need to by the book is a TPS reset, don't workaround that. You will have to take it to a dealer. Less that $40. Enjoy your race kit! |
