Looking at doing a open airbox mod for my 2005 XB9SX.. I have the buell race pipe,ECM and K&N filter and desnorkled... How many mods are there.. After a few days of searching I have a few questions... 1. Was there a Intake Shootout and what were the results? 2. How many Velocity stacks are out there and are they worth the dough... 3. Does the 2005 City have Same rubber stack and throttle body as a 12... Too many choices my head is splitting..I'm going to unplug, take some Motrin, and go ride... |

I have done some "non-scientific" tests and have the same basic setup you do (except with a DRUMMER exhaust) and have found very little difference between open airbox and using the dimpled air filter cover (the black part under the semi-transparent part you see). The best mod you can do is increase the volume of air that the bike can pull in and exhaust for the same time unit (i.e. CFM per minute). Just opening up the exhaust will likely have a bigger effect than just opening up the intake...you have effectively done both...which I am sure you have noticed is much better than stock. I will say that the open airbox seems to give a bit more power in the higher revs and the bike runs "smoother" in pulling through the revs. However it seems like it is a little softer at the bottom. This all makes sense since typically high airflow setups tend to make more power in the higher revs assuming the cam, heads, and the rest of the engine is geared towards making power in the upper RPM range. Unless you are going for a significant amount of power and doing many more internal mods to the motor, I personally don't think it is worth it to do much more than you have already. I don't plan to myself with my 9R and have instead focused on riding the bike better so that I use the power it has better (drop a gear sooner, let it rev more often, etc). |

The stock velocity stack is (as far as I know) as good as it gets. The metal one was snake oil. Opening up my 05 9sx airbox made the bike snort nicely, just like my Cyclone did with the forcewinder. It also made the filter show up through the airbox. The 06 inner airbox would likely have done much the same thing and be a simpler and more reliable modification. The nipple on the inner airbox (showed up in 05 I think) does make a significant differen ce. I think the throttle bodies are different. They got a lot closer in 05, but somebody mentioned they are still different. |

Don't quote me on this but I believe the 9SX & 9R have a 45mm throttle body & the 12s have a 49mm throttle body. Both are one piece. Before 05 the 9s had a two piece throttle body. It is my guess that the new one piece throttle body is the reason why the 05 & newer 9s have a different ecm & race ecm than the 03 & 04 9s. That's just my guess. I'm not an engineer or a mechanic so I'm sorta peeing in the wind on that one |

I suggest downwind. Headwinds get messy. |
