Hey guys, and gals, Been thinking of getting the Handy Industries front and rear wheel stands for my 97 S1. $100 for both is a killer deal, but I want to make sure they will work with my S1. They offer the rear with either rubber pads, or bobbin supports. I assume I would need the rubber pads...but not 100% positive. Anyone have anything to say about Handy Industries...or the stands themselves? Thanks in advance! Jay Boudreau | ||

Jay: I bought the $100 deal with the rubber pads-I'm pleased with the stands. They work with the S1 and the S2. The front stand seems a little wobbly on its own, I recommend using it only when the rear of the bike is already up on its stand. I sometimes remove the rubber pads and their associated hardware from the rear stand and substitute a steel rod--I think it's 5/16"--that I run through the stand and the hollow rear axle on my bikes. This arrangement is easier to use than the pads, but obviously it won't work if you're removing the wheel! Put a 90 degree bend in one end of the rod to "capture" that end in the stand. The company was good to deal with. I ordered off their website and they shipped fast. For the price, I don't think you can go wrong. r-t | ||

Can someone explain the difference between Bobbin Support and Rubber Pads, I have the rubber pad thing figured out. Is Bobbin Support to go into the hole in the rear axel????? | ||

I have a set of Pitt Bull stands (and like them). For the rear stand I have a set of reversible tips so the stand will handle both spools (bobbins) and lifting directly under the swingarm. On bikes that have them, spools/bobbins are screwed directly onto the swingarm. Having used both (spools on the SV650), I'd highly recommend using spools - much more secure lifting - but I haven't come across a way to mount spools on Buell swingarms?? Henrik | ||

I was going to get the handy stand but I was in a hurry so I bought the L-P series 2 rear stand at a local dealer for $75. I really like the pit bull and will likely get one for the front. | ||

I have the Handy stands, $99 for both the front and rear has to be one of the best deals in motorcycling period! I have been using them on both my M2 and S2 for over 2 years and I am completely satisfied! | ||

Question... Now that I have moved to WI from CA, this is the first time that I am storing a bike for the winter. I am considering both the separate Front/Rear stands as well as the one that lifts the rear by the pegs and utilizes a bottle jack for the front. My question is one better than the other concerning the steering bearings, forks and shocks? Have only seen both types used for temporary applications and was wondering what effects long term storage would have on the Old X1. Thanks in advance for your input concerning this matter. | ||

Addendum... The folks that store bikes in the area simply tell you to over inflate the tires and put the bike on 3/4" plywood rather than directly on the concrete. Any feedback on this technique? | ||

I don't think I would over inflate the tires but this will be the first year I store with bike stands. I always checked the tire pressure and put the bike on 3/4 inch plywood,keeps the condensation away from the bike.BadS1 | ||

Bads1... Inflating the tires to 40psi is to insure the rounded shape and help prevent flat spots. At least that is what I was told. | ||

Nevco: I have both kinds of lifts, and store bikes on both. I would however not use the bottle jack up front when using the "footpeg lift". Since I don't one of my bikes are resting on it's front wheel - no problem yet. I do prefer the front/rear stand combination. I'm using Pitbull stands. The 2-piece front stand that will lift under either forks or steering stem is great for all kinds of work. Be careful what you use for cover - a completely waterproof cover will trap condensation, which will wreck havoc on all metal parts. | ||

Henrik... Thanks for the information. I checked a number of websites and they concur. Additionally, they provided a list of other things I should do to prep for storage. Heck, at the rate I get things done, I will probably wrap it all up just in time to fire it up in spring. LOL | ||

I just got the stands in the mail. They seem to work great the only thing I didn't care for are the hard plastic wheels.Hmmmmmm!!! my sons skate board wheels look like the same size. I wonder if he will know the difference. | ||

I have put the Handy stands to work while my wheels are getting chromed and they seem to do the job just fine.And I didn't steal my kids skateboard wheels.I couldn't forgive myself for what could happen to him. | ||

I don't think I'm going to do the swing arm because then the cases would have to be done. But having the wheels done and then polished stainless nuts and bolts on the cases and the rest of the engine along with some more stainless braided line it will highlight the grey that the engine is.As far as the lights are concerned that will be done in chrome just have to recooperate from X-MAS. | ||

Lake... I bought the centerstand lift this year. Like it for what it is but not for all you are planning. After seeing the pics of the others, damn the price, I am going with the pit bull next year. I really like the front lift. | ||

Orion theres holes under the fork legs that the stands slide into.So line up the holes and push the stand down to the ground the bike is now lifted.They are really pretty easy to use | ||

OK, I got the Handy stands and I love the rear one. I'm apparently not smart enough to use the front one, though. I have a 2000 M2, and the holes in the bottom of my forks don't line up with the stand. The stand seems to be a half inch or so wider. Was I supposed to order a special front stand? Probably OK to just bend it in? TIA, J.D. | ||

Orion had the same problem yes just bend it in while lining up after you use them ounce or twice they will have memory of your forks. | ||

I used zip ties to hold the ends close while lifting the Blast. Worked good on the other bikes w/o the ties. | ||

I've borrowed Keith's handy stands three times now. The work okay on the '97 Cyclone, but the rear stand does like to start sliding up the swingarm if you wiggle the bike. I secure the rear stand to the swingarm with zip ties. It's awfully hard to beat the price, especially when you can borrow them from a friend. I think skateboard wheels would be too compliant and allow the stands to become tippy. Keep the hard plastic ones. | ||

I got a pair of the Handy stands this week. Did the trim on the rear stand to get 15 inch clearance between the uprights. That part is working good. Now how do I work the front stand? Do I need to modify the right leg to be shorter (3/8 inch)or do I just hoist it up? I have never used stands before so I could be just shy about using them. Any help would be appreciated. DBird | ||

Dbird the one fork leg is longer then the other on the XB's so yo will need to have a 1/2 inch added to the one side to make them work.That what I had to do. |
