how can you tell if your bike is running lean or rich just by riding it? Does it "Cough" more when its rich? i know im at 1,000 miles on my Ss and my right leg does seem to get hotter alot sooner then it used to. it has warmed up allitle but sometimes in slow, stop and go city riding, my leg is on fire. I thought maybe it was leaning out. Are new bikes set up from the factory rich, or lean? i go for my 1,000 mile service this sat.(weather permitting), so ill have them check it out!! but just thought id check in here... |

I hear they are factory lean to help with epa regs. But thats just what I hear, and now that you are reading on the internet what I heard, that makes it next to worthless |

They are set up pretty lean to meet EPA standards. Normally a cough indicates a more lean condition. I still pull the spark plugs to see how the engine is burning. The contemporary method is to use the dyno and a O2 sensor. As long as your bike is not pinging (spark knock/pre-igniton) then you should be ok. I have a xb12x and it runs lean and hot especially when it is in traffic. I have to run in clean air to cool the engine off for a few minutes after prolonged inching along in traffic to prevent pinging under load. The rule of thumb is use good gas, time the engine for the gas, always watch for intake manifold leaks and use a good motorcycle oil! |

They really aren't set up "too lean" from the factory. They ARE at 14.7:1 through the lower RPM/throttle angles where the EPA tests constrain them. But above the EPA test regimen requirements, they are set richer than 14.7:1. The WOT fuel curve on the stock pipe and stock ECM map at the exhaust shootout was actually quite nice without any tuning at all. I'm not saying that I wouldn't push the whole curve down a little, but I certainly wouldn't feed bad about riding it around as it came from the factory, IF THERE ISN'T ANYTHING ELSE WRONG (i.e., intake leak) Al |
