I have just recently bought a 2001 Buell blast p3 from a buddy of mine. He is quite a bit bigger than me and had put some after stock renthal handle bars on it and i decided to rotate them down a bit. everything went well with that except now it wont start. I have checked the battery and all of the wiring is intact that i can see. any suggestions?

Will it turn over at all? Power up at all? Could it just be an unrelated dead battery?

er, the Voice of Experience asks, didja hit the kill switch? check it before you completely re-wire the bike

you do NOT have to ask, do ya?

didja hit the kill switch ...

Imagine the morning of my very first track day ever. All geared up, ready to ride to the track (Loudon w/ Pridmore CLASS) and the bike won't start. After about 6 runs to jump start someone points to the kill switch ... if I wasn't aggravated and nervous already ...

Of course, later that day the bike dies on the very first intro lap heading into the bowl. Jason Pridmore stops by and ask if I can fix it - give me a ride to the pit and back. Armed with my trusty leatherman, electrical tape and wire ties I short out the kick stand kill switch and off I go again.

Ah, the memories ... : D

I have checked the kill switch and it is on, i fell like it is going to be something stupid though. the battery works fine and the lights and everything turn on but nothing at all when i try to start.

try pulling in the clutch and trying to start it. If the neutral switch has a problem, you may be able to start it that way.

Read the Hand Book ...

Get a Motors Manual and Parts Book for your
year and model ...

If you have lights, it should start ???

Make sure the KILL SWITCH is in the PROPER POSITION, FUEL ON(has to have gas in gas tank), PULL the CLUTCH and it should start ...

Twiggy - What sort of lights come on when you turn on the bike? Headlight? Neutral indicator on the speedo?

Will it start in neutral with the sidestand up and the clutch pulled in?

BTW, I see you're in Atlanta. Go over to the Storm Fronts section of this board, and the 3% group under that. They are a very active BRAG chapter near you. Some of them own Blasts. Not only a good source of help, but you'll make some friends as well.

all of the lights come on the headlight, tail light and brake light, neutral light, and the turn signals work. I always have to have the clutch in to start whether in neutral or not. I know it has to be something easy but i have wracked my brain and got nowhere.

If you have a voltmeter, slap it across the battery terminals when you push the start button. If it does not drop significantly, that narrows the range of things that could be broken by large amount.

If that's the case, I'd be looking at the starter relay and the starter switch.

try bypassing the sidestand switch, Twig -- they are notorius for failing

then, if that's OK, check the plug for spark --

Still having no luck. I find it hard to believe that the switch went out at the same time as i rotated the handle bars. are there any hidden kill switches anywhere that i may have hit in the process. starting to feel pretty stupid though.
what is the easiest way to bypass the sidestand switch?

When you say it doesn't start, do you mean it does not crank over? If so and it started OK before you rotated the bars, I'd say you probably pulled out or broke the wire that goes to the starter relay from the start button on the handlebar.

Well, there's probably 2 wires to that switch, one with +12 VDC and the one that goes to the start relay. Either could be disconnected or broken.

sorry about that bomber. i just bought the buell and i am trying to open a restaurant so my brain is going in a whole lot of different directions. the lights turn on and everything, but when i hit the ignition button, nothing. It does not try to turn over or even do any pull on the battery. I have traced the wires from the ignintion all the way under the gas tank and nothing has come loose or broken. i took the ignition apart and everything looked good. I tried bypassing the sidestand swithch and still nothing. just ordered the service manual as well so hopefully that might help. thanks for all the help and if anyone has anymore ideas let me know.

maybe pulled the wired from the start switch on the bar. if you have someone who can check the continuity with a volt meter, that would eliminate that problem.
If the lights are not going off, I am guessing that is probably it, or maybe the kill switch wires.
You can take the assembly apart, just be careful. Take pictures as you go if you have a digital camera, so you know how it goes back together.

Good luck, these are frustrating problems sometimes.
If the wires are zip tied really close to the bars, it doesnt take much to pull one off the switch.

How's your battery? New? Old?

Battery on a charger regularly?

How long since you had the bike running last?

that's great data twig -- I suspect your clutch interlock siwtches -- bypass the son up a gun -- if that doesn't work, track the wiring using a meter backward from the starter -- the schematic in the service manual is a big help here, tho of bit of an eyechart ;-}

no apologies needed mungst friends, bud
