I will be moving back to Seattle within the next month. I have a rental truck for moving, and wish to put my bikes ('03 XB9SL & '04 FZ6) inside. I did this on the way from Seattle to Syracuse and ended up damaging the kickstands on both bikes. I really don't want that to happen again. Anybody have an idea how I can get this to work? I will be pulling a car on a car carrier as well. | ||

tie the bikes down so the stands arn't supporting the weight (more or less upright) | ||

I JUST did this about 2 weeks ago... Use your mattress.. place the matress vertical against the wall...and lean he biek against it, and strapp it down... I took the bars outta the triple, and removed the rear brake lever(in case somethign shifted it woulndlt brake off).. laid the bars against the the top of the tank... it traveled 26 miles liek that dwith no incident, and for those hwo have traveled them, I went 95/ 80/70/20 and then 10....NOT the best highways in teh Nation....but the straightest route... Bomber, I don't recall these rental trucks having any decent tie downs inside. Hopefully I am wrong. Chase, did you notice any scuff marks from the mattresses? I had a mattress touching the windscreen on the FZ6 for the last move and now there is a hazy spot there. | ||

Most U-Haul and Ryder rental trucks have rails along the sides. I've looped tie-down straps thru them when the hooks wouldn't fit, then cinched stuff in sideways and it worked fine for me. Although I have no idea what the failure mode or force required to damage those tie rails, but they seemed to hold up just fine. What you pack around the bike and how you pack it is just as important as how you tie the bike(s) down or otherwise secure them. Don't use anything that will rub and sand the paint off. | ||

Yeah, the Budget truck I used last time had those same rails. But I did end up pulling one off the wall tying the bikes up. Maybe that one (truck) was the exception? I'll swing by the rental place and take a look at how they're currently set up. Sounds like this should be pretty straight forward then. Thanks to all! | ||

I wish I could go to the homecoming, but my schedule doesn't allow for it. I can't even make it to the Demo days at Appleton HD, like I had hoped.  | ||

What part of Seattle are you heading to? I grew up out there, well, make that I aged from childhood out there. Still have relatives scattered around that region. Should be a nice drive westward, mountains should be coming into full bloom with decent weather for the most part, but a slight chance of freeze in the mountains. | ||

We'll actually be rolling into Bremerton for a few months, then I would like to end up in the Northgate area. I hope to take some time to enjoy the drive this time, rather than the hectic pace we set on the way out here. | ||

Northgate can be a nice area, close to the water, north of the main part of the city, easy escape from town to the hills, and out of the worst of the traffic. Last time we were out there we spent time on the coast near Moclips, and before that some time down around Hoodsport and up around Sequim. Drove around Bremerton on the way to the ferry dock back across the Sound. I miss it out there at times. Stop in some of the mining towns along the way. As you come down the hill into Idaho there's a small jewlery/nicknack shop in Wallace if I remember right. Probably a good spot to cool the truck brakes off a bit. | ||

Update - My moving truck (BUDGET 14ft) didn't have tie downs in the floor. My father-in-law and I built a swingarm stand out of leftover 2x4's and put some of that no-slip material on it where it touched the swingarm. It ain't pretty, but it worked like a charm. We're still in Bremerton, but looking to get back to the Seattle side of the water soon. |
