The snow is slowly melting away on the streets here right now, so I have been pulling the newly bought XB9S -03 out for some test rides. I must say that the bike feels like nothing else I have been riding before :-) But, the gearbox seems very rough... I can clearly feel the dogs shifting from 1'th to 2'nd and even to third gear when revving it up a bit. It seems that a more aggressive shifting generates less noise in the gearbox. I have read a lot of different experience with the gearbox here on the XBoard, is this normal or is some adjusting or other service needed ? | ||

Hard to say. But HD trannies, and this includes Buells, are kind of clunky. Yeah, you are better off shifting a little harder. But you may need a fluid change. Depends on the bikes mileage, and where you got it from, etc. CHeck with others on the board, since there was a recall for the belt, or something to that effect, that may have something to do with it. I have an '03 and they are a bit clunky for the first few thousand miles. Using synthetic 75w90 gear oil, proper primary chain tension, and miles will smooth it out quite a bit, but not as smooth as some Japanese bikes I have ridden. | ||

I got about 22000 miles on my 03S, and the shifting will definatly get smoother as time goes by. I would recommend changing to the synthetic gear lube that Moboy mentioned, it was the biggest change that I noticed. | ||

My primary chain was the biggest issue for me on my 03, check it when you do a fluid change. | ||

oil level also has an effect. make sure that it is exactly as described in the manual. | ||

It only has 3300 miles , the belt is changed due to recall, how could the type of belt make the shifting rough ? Is the recommended synthetic 75W90 of hypoid type ? (Message edited by kjelle69 on April 22, 2006) | ||

there has been great debate over tranny fluid. Everyone seems to agree syn3 or equivalent is what you should run in the tranny. There has been some discussion of hypoid gear oils causing problems with bronze bushings. Synthetic lubes in the 20-50 motor oil range have also produced good results. |
