I really didn't need to see a video of some poor bastard getting killed.
I'm also not real sure why I deserve it, either.

Well I think he meant it for some of us that are more enclined to hooliganism.

I do have fun but I also know to stay within my limits.

Unfortunately, We have several of those types of HWY mergings in my area and the the bad news is that could have happened to any body if there was sand or oil in the curve.

Makes you think before hammering a fist full of throttle!

Yes it was a gruesome video........

Everybody should learn to heed the speed, but I digress to the fun factor more than I should.

God Speed fellow rider.

It did not appear that the rider was being a hooligan or breaking any laws.

Why was the camera trained on him from the outset? What was the camera operator expecting? Why?

This video has an odd aroma...

Jim there are several of those type of videos around from people " showing off " that have their friend in preset locations to film them as they go by.

I have seen some of people taunting the cops and then running from them again with their friends set up at different areas to film them.

Not smart, but again to each his own.

Well I can see your point Jim but who know why there is a camera there. The Europeans have cameras all over the place and we will probably be seeing that to some extent here. Especially where traffic studies are being done on places like this where I'm sure a lot of accidents happen.
Ever done the "Fishhook" entering Hwy 1 northbound from Hwy 17 South?

Upon viewing this as slow as I could make it run, it looks like he saw the oncoming traffic and got on the brakes; then the curve decreases in radius and the front washes out.

These types of curves are killers for inexperienced and experienced riders alike if they aren't familiar with it.

Woops, That would be merging onto Hwy 1 North at the Hwy 17 convergence from northbound Hwy 1.

It's a really stupid sick curve like the one in the video. The barriers, once white, are nearly black with tire marks all along the apex.

This will be a good scare vid for my son to see since he is about to embark on the two-wheeled journey of life.
I am worried of course, but better now while I have a chance to teach, rather than to have him learn without good supervision and training on his own later.

Hi Steve,

Have your son take the Motorcycle Safety Foundation course.

It's a good foundation.

Best,

Yep! I have him enrolled for the June 1st class at Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz.

I bought him a nice 99 Virago 535 cruiser to start with. It's not real fast but it looks cool and is small enough that it will be a breeze to learn on. He won't be given the green light until I'm satisfied of his abilities to make good judgment and has the skills to stay out of trouble.

Hi Steve,

I think if I were to do it all over again I would start with a street legal dirt bike. My youngest daughter wants to ride and that may be in her future. We'll see.

You just have to make him understand how to maneuver and stop his bike. And of course that he is invisible to the cages.

Best,

Jim in Santa Barbara

Yep! Already got him signed up!
I have till June 1st to corrupt his mind with fear of hooliganism!

That's hard to do with my reputation!
Remember CAMS II or was that III? Songdog Ranch and whoop-te-doos coming out of the hills! I did a 100+ wheelstand off the top of one of those hills behind the commander on my loaded S3T!

Serious pucker factor on that one!

I do agree on the dirt bike method of starting but I have never ridden dirt and it would require a lot more equipment than I can possibly afford like trailer/truck/more than one bike, etc.

I'm committed to teaching him right which is the hard part of being a kid in a parents body....

Hi Steve,

Yeah, I remember the whoops on the 58 heading from Atascadero to McKittrick.

I'm certain you weren't the only one airborne on that stretch.

I don't know any names, but heard stories.... ; )

A good reminder why we need to take it to the track for riding near the limit like that. May his suffering and possible death not be in vain. It helped remind me to not be to aggressive on the street. That's always a good thing.

rhesus people, relax, the guys fine. :P this was just a reminder that the street isnt the track.

"I saw the show, awhile back, the guy lived. I don't remember the injuries, but they weren't as bad as you would think. If I remember right, the front tire hit his helmet, launched the right side of the car causing the back tire to fly over him instead of rolling over him." - gregc

Boy that's good to know! I could swear I saw body parts flying off when he hit the gaurd rail. Glad he's OK.
I wonder if he still rides though?

I had an accident 12 years ago that left me wheelchair bound for almost a year.
A drunk driver plowed into my rear as I was stopped on a two-lane road waiting to make a left turn. I still ride but I pay particular attention to the mirrors now!

Thanks for that info Greg!

Steve,

The convergence of highways CA-17 and CA-1 has always been a trip. I first sampled those in the early 60's and they have changed a lot over the years.

In the "Good Old Days" both of those highways had three lane stretches that included time shared "suicide" passing lanes.

Can you imagine going over the summit on 17 before they added the concrete lane dividers? Those hard diving and climbing sweepers with nothing but a painted double line between you and the oncoming traffic?

On 17, four or five feet away to your left you had 100 to 140 MPH closure rates with oncoming traffic and four or five feet to your right were cars full of people winding up for or down from a day at the beach.

What a great ride it was!

Jack
