Anyone have any experience with both of these and have an opinion as to which one of the open air box conversions is better? The F.A.S.T. air box conversion has heat shielding which would make you think it should perform better. Anybody know? Thanks. Parry |

I have a FAST system, great power gain, noticeable heat decrease (my groin/belly says that) nice intake sound, and very nice look (toocoool) if you use a transparent airbox cover. but it is so expensive!! I've bought it used. I think you'll gain same hp using the open airbox conversion that is a lot cheaper. Someone is selling also a thermal mat kit separately so you can buy it later and place it underneat the airbox base. it's up to your tastes and $$ |

I have had both units on my bike. Currently I am running the FAST set up. The FAST provides a very noticeable power gain over the open airbox set up. All you need to order is the heat mat and velocity stack. You can source the K&N here in the U.S. a lot cheaper than having it come from Germany. The mat and stack cost me $168 USD. Not too bad. You will have to "fit" the stack to your throttle body. I had to use a dremel tool with a sanding drum to "clean up" the throttle body so the machined stack would fit right. The stock throttle body is cast and is sort of "in the rough". Also it's pretty tight clearance wise under the air box cover. I don't have the FAST air box extended cover. I am using my stock cover. The K&N contacts it slightly on the inside but it does not appear to be a problem. Personally, I would go for the FAST system. It really works good. |

Special OPS sells an insulation blanket that is similar to part of the FAST kit. The open air box helps a lot, the insulation helps, and the third part of the FAST kit seems expensive. Not to say the stack is not worth it, just to note that you can relatively easily get two of the three features with a very economical mat and reckless enthusiasm on the airbox. |

What all is included in the FAST system? All I noticed was the mat and the filter. Got any pics of the third item? |

Ejiii, Did you get the mat and stack directly from HBM for $168? |

Madsx, Yes I did. The filter I got out here in CA. It was in the $70 range if I remember correctly. If you plan on the whole project costing about $250 you will be in good shape. |

Thanks for the info guys. Looks like it's worth the extra $$$. I think I'm going to give it a go and use a Drummer catch can. Firebolteric - did you locate the breather into the mat or does it come designed that way? Parry |

IT CAME DESIGNED THIS WAY. I AM CHANGING IT SOON THOUGH AND GOING W/ A CATCH CAN TYPE SYSTEM. I DON'T CARE FOR THIS ONE AS OIL RESIDUE EVENTUALLY STARTS TO COME OUT SLOWLY. I THINK A DRUMMER IS IN ORDER ALSO! |

Does anyone know where to get the F.A.S.T. kit in the US? Seems like intake parts are kinda scarce Any help pointing the way is appreciated. |

I don't remember where I read it but I think Daves can get you one - check sponsors link. Parry |

FYI as some of us develop some of the new Direct Link MAPs keep in mind it is going to be difficult to cover every configuration. I am sure we will cover the K&N with and without the American Sport Bike Open Air Box Kit, but there will be impossible to cover every different air cleaner available. It looks like a very interesting set-up, but it's flow will be different from those with available MAPS. ... Terry |

I could not find a US source. I went straight to Hillbilly-Motors Motors in Germany. It's a very easy transaction. You can order it over the phone using your credit card just like anything else. Jens and his wife speak good english. The hardest part of the deal is getting a hold of them. They are always out racing! |

Buelldyno_guy...does this mean there is nothing on the F.A.S.T. system as of yet for the direct link? i've got the F.A.S.T. w/ a jardine and am awaiting to see who has the best dyno figures for the exhaust part of things. i plan on something different..the micron is looking very sweeeeet as of now w/ the dyno #'s. I'M READY to buy the direct link as soon as a map is ready for my combination. GREAT work w/ all this new software guys!! |

This was the first we have heard it discussed and I want to think we will dyno tune almost anything. But let's say the flow is a lot different from the American Sport Bike OAB Kit, it could take all day to get it right. Our Dyno generates approx. $100/hr for our Service Department. We try and keep it full five days a week, so I work on MAP development and our race bike during down time and weekends. Please don't get me wrong I want all your bike to just scream when you drop the hammer, but you can help by trying to holding the configurations to the most popular. On this FAST System do I understand that you can buy the blanket and stack, but still use the larger K&N and American Sport Bike OAB lid? I will contact AL this morning and discuss the issue. ... But remember is all take time to get it right and I am still have a few XB9 and XB12 MAPs in front of the development of new ones. ... Terry |

I believe the filter is an RX-4010 K&N. |

I do sell the FAST system and will have them available soon. I will also be doing some DL maps for them. It will take some time to get all the popular combos covered though so bear with me. |

The 'filter-top' style (X-stream?)filter that comes with the Fast Kit will work better with a taller airbox lid as the stock one sits very close and may obstruct that area.A 'standard' K&N will probably flow enough air for the motor anyway. That's not an informed opinion, just an opinion. I tried both the FAST kit and an xb12 airbox lid with K&N on my 9. Subjectively the 12 lid improved bottom-end response but the FAST gave slightly better top-end. I never managed to optimise the fuelling with either using a PC111 as my ecu kept unlearning the changes but the heat-blanket was definitely a worthwhile addition, as insulating the air-box bottom might also well be. |

Fed, is this a picture of the F.A.S.T. installed? What is your experience with it, did you have to go to a XB12 lid or did you just run it with the stock XB9 lid? Dave, when do you expect the kits to be in and what kind of cost? (Message edited by 007firebolt on February 18, 2006) |

I run my FAST kit with the stock (XB9) airbox cover. Yes, the top of the filter does contact the inside of the cover. No, it is not the optimal set up but it still really works good. A taller airbox cover is available and I'm sure the FAST system would work even better but again, it still works great. In my opinion it works noticeably better than the American Sport Bike open airbox set up. |

Will the fast kit be compatible with just a race ecm and a drummer ss, without any other mods on a XB12? And will there be noticable changes to the performance of the bike, and if so, any idea of the differences between a stock xb12? |

I have not tried a FAST system, so I can't comment on it. However, my experiences with POD type systems (i.e. a filter clamped to the end of an intake runner) from past lives has been that they make good top end power but can suffer in transient throttle response. It doesn't show up on the dyno, but can be felt when you grab a big handful of throttle. My experience has been that velocity stacks and still airboxes are usually better at the transient response than pod-type systems. Does this apply to the XB? Don't know, haven't tested it. It is a tougher thing to quantify than just power from WOT dyno pulls, so even testing it is difficult. It is a subjective thing, kinda like the difference between a Mikuni and a CV on a carbed Buell. YMMV (Message edited by al_lighton on February 21, 2006) |

EJiii: Why are you running the inner air box at all? I am missing something I guess. later, Bart |

i believe he means the outer air box "skin", or body piece. it will fit over the kit as ejiii says. its tight. but still works well. |

Bart, Yes, you are correct. All the "inners" are gone. The cover that says Buell on it is the component I was talking about. |
