Ok, guess this topic have been up before, i have been reading old archives so if i get this right, Mobil1 15w50 (or other brand) in both engine and transmission, do not use gear oil 75w90 gear oil in the tranny?

I have been using 80w90 gear oil in my xb12s tranny and its works great. gear oil is rated differently than engine oil. Pretty sure 75w90 is similar in viscosity to 20w50.

I am using 75/90 Gear oil in Primary, and 20/50 in oil.

Amsoil, Mobile 1, Syn3

All work fine. IMHO, it depends on the person and what they want.

15W-50 Mobil 1 in the crankcase
75W-90 Mobil 1 in the primary/tranny

Never a problem, and it runs great!

same as phantom.

Shifting got noticeably better when I switched to Mobil 1 from the HD oils.
Note: 75-90 is the gear oil

RedLine all the way. 20/50 in the motor, Shockproof Light in the primary.

What about using 15w50 in both gear and engine? Heard that the clutch may slip if you use 75W-90 in gearbox?

75w-90 is specifically designed for use with clutches, like the ones in a car differential.

Guzz .. have to go with you on the Redline at least in the primary .. have about 3k right now and checked this past weekend and the fluid is still "clear".. figured that it would have clouded up and been nasty by now .... and the only reason that I went the Redline route was that it was getting too hard to find the Mobil1 gear oil ...

Do not use gear oils in the primary of an XB or Blast. Hypoid oils contain sulfur which attacks and corrodes brass, copper, and bronze. It will attack any bearing in your tranny made of those metals, and will also start to attack the copper wires in your stator.

All reliable info states- Not to use gear oil in your transmission, it won't hurt the gears or clutches, but will hurt other things. This topic was recently brought up in the KV in the oils section, and also in the Thumperforum.

I bet if someone were to call Redline they are going to tell you MTL. MTL = Manual Transmission Lube

Its what they suggest for HD big twin primarys and its made to go into transmissions.

MTL and MT90 from Redline are GL4 gear oils and do not contain the sulfur.

Mobil 1 75W/90 claims to protect copper!

Is there an oil guru among us that can give us the real deal info?

M1 says NOT to use its gear oil in transmissions that call for motor oil.

I am pulling mine out this week and going with Red Line 20W-50.

Not worth the risk.

Syn3 20-50. And, it doesn't affect warranty! Put this in at 1000 mi in engine and trans. Shifting is supper smooth and engine is quieter. Nice not having two oils.

What does that have to do with Buells primary lube?

Did you mean 4th point under "features and benefits" that says "excellent rust, staining and corrosion protection of copper and its alloys... (for) Reduced wear
Longer component life"?

brianb - no worries, I was asking an honest question not challenging you, although upon rereading my last post, it does appears a bit terse.

There was a lot of talk in this thread about sulfur being bad for yellow metals, and here is Mobil telling us that their gear lube is ok for yellow metals. I think I'll still use Mobil1 75W50 without worry.

JLB, what don't you get about DON'T USE HYPOID OIL in your Transmission ! It was never designed to be used in ANY Manual transmission- so don't put it in one !

You'd be safer using automatic transfluid than you would GL-5 hypoid oils. I'm a Certified Ford Dealer Service tech, and not only do we have warning bulletins about NEVER putting GL-5's in manual transmissions, but I've worked on many automotive trans that were damaged from someone swapping hypoid oil into their tranny.

Btw- if you have an oil chemist evaluate the properties of H-D Sport-Trans fluid, you'll find it has similar properties of autotrans fluid/hydraulic oil, NOT Gear/Hypoid oil !

Interesting. I missed those comments.

Anyone care to explain what creates the nasty sulfur smell in the OEM SportTrans lube? I kinda figured it is the EP additive package and that it includes a sulfur compound. But I truly don't know. I just know that it smells offensive, in a pungent sulfur kind of way.

If your stator has copper exposed to the tranny fluid, is it not already toast?

Does the Buell primary/transmission contain brass, bronze, or copper components?

Please note that the sulfur in most EP gear lubricants should not be "active" and so not corrosive wrt copper at temperatures below 100 degrees C.

But maybe it is a moot point since that even without the use of EP additives polyglycol based synthetic tranny lubes provide wear control comparable to conventional EP rated lgear lubes. Thus the risk of sulfur induced copper/brass/bronze corrosion is eliminated.

I've sent an inquiry to the Mobil-1 folks asking them whether or not their 75W90 tranny lube is corrosive to copper and its alloys.

Blake, instead of asking the Mobil 1 folks, why don't you ask your Buell factory anony's ? Or even Mr.Imonabuss himself ?
And I have a fresh quart of Sport-Trans fluid opened up under my nose right now, and it doesn't smell ANYTHING like the nasty pungent smell of Mobil 1 75w90 which I also have a quart of opened.

If Hypoid oil use was ok for the primary of XL's/XB's, why wouldn't Harley or Buell just have recommended them as a substitute ? And why is it that EVERY source of info online and hardcopy -advise you NOT to use Hypoid oils in manual transmission gearboxes. And I've even seen the syncros of auto trannies toasted because of Mobil 1 Hypoid use. Just do a net search yourself if you don't believe me ?
