Hi folks, I'm a new XB12Ss owner and have already had a mishap. Wind caught my bike cover and it melted on the 510 mile old headers. Any suggestions on how to clean off the discoloration? Thanks, |

Run the bike, heat the header up and either 220 grit sandpaper or steel wool. Take off as much as you can before you run the bike though, to minimize stinky smokiness. |

Get the pipes hot and try to wipe off the goo that is left. Fine steel wool will polish out the stains. |

Thanks guys. I was thinking a brass brush but will give the steel wool a try. |

brass will burnish a brass colored spot onto your header. steel wool is the ticket. |

I've melted jacket sleeves, one Big Gulp cup, assorted riding gear on pipes, chrome and my Buell pipes, and I've had good luck with a propane torch and gentle removal. Once you get the 'big' stuff off continue heating (using common sense) and wipe with a wool glove. It's worked for me for years. The best glove I've found is the United States Army green wool inserts. G2 |

I've used oven cleaner with great success. Spray it on...run the bike...wipe it off...just like new!!! |

OK, oven cleaner sound like the most benign method to try so far. I'll give it a shot. If that doesn't work, I'll break out my propane torch and see if I can find one of my old USMC green wool inserts and give them a try. I'm sure they will work much better than any ole Army ones |

Just how much of the cover got melted? I have had small mishaps with my riding pants touching the header after a ride, but just picked off the mess with my fingers and burned off the rest while riding. |
