I have been trying to figure if I want one or not. Right now I ride with a back pack but the last 2 times I have rode I had to pull over to look at that map.. Just curious about the Buell tank bag .. I dont' want something real big.. But also Sporty.. Do I need the buell tank mask to have these work?? I like the Fieldsheer products (Fieldsheer.com)but the on like doesn't have a spot for a map.. Just want your expert opinions of those who have tank bag.. Again I like something sleek with map holder that will mount to the xb9s tank.. Thanks |

I have the Buell tank bag and love it. Its functional, has a map holder, mounts perfectly to the bike, and looks pretty good IMO. Drake |

Personally I don't like tank bags. A map pocket for the tank is a great idea though. I bought a tailpack from "Rally" and it fits enough stuff to do a 3-4 day trip when expanded. |

tank bags help keep the weight forward biased on the bike and where you can see it. Tail bags and saddlebags encourage poor weight distribution, and therefore improper handling. I know people have gotten away with it, and you can set your suspension for the weight. Few actually do it. Another factor to consider, ever lose anything off the back of your bike? I have. I use an aerostitch messenger bag and a tank bag when i need to carry stuff on the bike. Works for me. |

I have seen a few tank bag map holders listed on ebay. I think I looked up 'Motorcycle / luggage' or "/bags" but the bag was alot smaller than the one on Buell website. big enough for a map, tall enough for a small tool kit, some gloves and maybe a bottle of water. I'll see if I can find it. |

I put grommets (eyelets) in the straps of my chase harper tank bag. It now mounts similarly to others I have seen for the Buells, using the front airbox cover screws. The rear strap attaches around the subframe under the seat. The bag itself isvery similar to the 750. http://www.chaseharper.com/TankBags/TankBags.htm It mounts far enough back that it does not interfere with the gas cap. Diablobrian, My tail bag never carries more than 12 to 15 pounds and I can't even tell it is there. |

This is kinda funny though. A few years ago a buddy bought a budget tail bag for his GSXR and during a high speed run it blew the zipper and ejected the entire contents about 20 feet in the air and down a hundred feet of road.... My tail bag has rear facing vents to prevent that from happening. |

Skyguy, I saw a friend's tail bag come loose and get stuck between the rear wheel and the fender. Friction actually caught the thing on fire while we were trying to convince him via frantic hand gestures to stop. He had papers and a windbreaker in it. Then there were my old saddlebags, I melted a good set of rain gear when a strap came loose and the bag rested on the pipe. Not possible on a Buell, but you get why I don't dig saddle/tail bags. This is on top of the weight distribution issues I mentioned before. I'm glad you have a well engineered tail bag, and the one Buell sells seems to be well engineered, but in general it's just not something I'll be doing any time soon. I still keep a bungee net for emergencies, but that's kind of a final option for me. (Message edited by diablobrian on March 16, 2006) |

Diablo, I had RKA saddlebags on my F2 and the only problem I had with them was the cheap plastic buckle breaking when a buddy (and relatively new rider) anticipated a pass I was getting ready to make on two cars and had to back out. He clipped my rear quarter at 70mph. I was down to about 30mph and both of us got real lucky. Broke a lot of plastic on both bikes. Darn cheap buckles lol. All bags should have vents that allow more air to pass out of the bags than can pass into the bags through the fabric. |

Riderwearhouse has a set-up that is just a map pocket with no tank bag, kind of like what Buell used to sell for the tubers. It is a map pocket with a mount kit. http://www.aerostich.com/product.php?productid=16417&cat=279&page=3 I also like the forearm map case for going without a tank mounted anything. http://www.aerostich.com/product.php?productid=16196&cat=279&page=3 |

Buellxb9s- The Buell tank bag does look a little tall. I was kinda worried about that too when I saw it in pictures. In real life, I think it fits the bike real well and does not look out of place. In its expanded form, its gonna look pretty tall to hold all your stuff. In the pictures you see of it, the bag is in its compressed setting. Its semi rigid, so it holds its shape when nothing is in it. |

I also thought it looked a bit tall. But really, the new tank bag for the XBs is awesome. Put one on the wife's XB9SX. It's also nice to lay on going down the super slab. |

I have the Buell XB tank bag and Firebolt tail bag. The tail bag is nice for taking a few things to work. It integrates nicely into the design of the Firebolt. The tank bag is indeed tall..so tall, I can rest my chin on it. I have short arms, so it does seem a bit obtrusive to me. If it were collapsible, I would find it more comfortable. I only use it if I'm going away for a few days and need to pack several day's worth of clothing. Otherwise, I prefer to do without. But when I need it it's good to have, even if I find it uncomfortable. |

Tank bag question, do the Buell tank bags scratch the plastic. That plastic seems very soft and i have always worried about abrasive scratches. |

"Tank bag question, do the Buell tank bags scratch the plastic. That plastic seems very soft and i have always worried about abrasive scratches." I covered the top of my airbox cover with urethane film. 3M's product is called Scotchcal and Avery Dennison makes some too. It's known as a "paint protective film" |

The Chase harper bags have neoprene (wetsuit material) on the bottom for grip and scratch resistance. Like anything else you have to keep it clean to avoid scratches. |
