Hello everyone, I'm new here, we have just purchased a 1998 S1W White Lightning. I have been searching the forums for recall info, and am most interested in how I tell if our S1 has had the shock recall taken care of. I have run the VIN number through the Harley check up site I got off the UK site and no recalls come up listed. How much can I trust that info? I am also looking to lower the suspension by an 1" if possible. How might that be accomplished? Thanks, I'm looking forward to learning a lot here about our new machine. james |

Look at my profile. That is the shock that was recalled. If you look in the thunderstorm head thread at lowlifes shock the good one looks like that. |

Garrett1998s1: That shock looks like the one that came on my 97S3T ... If the eyelets on either end of the shock a aluminium you should have the recall done !!! Use a magnet to check, if you do not lube the aluminum one every 5K they will break and MY ADVISE IS TO HAVE RECALL DONE ASAP/PDQ !!! There is no stop to keep the rear wheel from going "MAX" into tailsection if the shock breaks inturnaly or exturnaly(eyelet)which could get you hurt or killed !!! My eye lets pass the maget test and "i" lube them evety 5K ... |

Thanks, What I'm seeing in the two pics is the bad shock has an open spring and the good shock is enclosed? I have the enclosed shock. Next question. Did the shock lengths change at some point? If so will a shorter shock cause a decrease in ride height? Provided it can be fitted. james |

Another question. Will a rear fender(hugger) from a '97 S1 fit on a '98 S1W? james |

My recall was done. That pic is old right before I bought the bike. Thanks for the concern though. Garrett |

James, A rear fender from a '97 S1 will fit on a '98 S1W. They both use the same swingarm. |

Okay, now you all know how new I am to tubers. A shorter shock will increase ride height and a longer shock will decrease ride height, Duh! I did the magnet test on the shock and it has a steel front eye and an aluminum rear eye. Am I good to go on the shock recall? james |
