Today was a long day, and the weather was getting cooler, so I took a shortcut of sorts and decided to fit my lowers and drill for dzus fasteners after a ride to a freinds' house that is 10 miles away up some back roads. I rode with an SV1000 that used to walk away from me under acceleration, and now can hang right with him. (just fit a new pipe)

Anyway, I was on an empty road, doing 100+, and as I come to a stop sign he comes up all honking his horn. Seems my lower had come detached on the right side and was flapping hard on my right side (I was in a left sweeper with great visibility and was looking through the corner) We checked it out, and on my first real ride with the painted fairings I cracked them with about a 2" crack at the top, and they were slamming into the header down low and have spider cracking all through the new paint job. He said they were flapping out past my boot. : (

DO NOT RIDE WITHOUT THE LOWERS ON SHARKSkINS!

I bummed some zip ties to limp home from friends house, and looked at the upper most of the ride. Without the lower there for some structure it catches a lot of air and wants to flap, especially in the lower right front.

Oh well, I spose its a good cure for vanity.

My story is almost as bad. Happened a few days ago. I take my exhuast pipe down to clean and paint after installing a new O2. I installed the pipe with a shallow socket thinking it was tight enough. So I go on this ride and all of a sudden 6 miles or so away from home. My pipe unhooks and is dangling up front. I slow down and pull into a gas station. All I could get from the attendant was these long trash bags. So I used the bags to hold the pipe up till i get home. I have my headers wrapped so i figured it would hold. As soon as I got home the bag just fell apart on me.

The worst part of it is one of rear clamps was some how scraping against the belt and I lost about 2 layers of skin off the belt. I can still ride the bike but the belt will need replacing asap.

Lesson learned was tighten the exhaust down super mofo tight.

Oh great - I put mine on kinda loose, for fear of smashing the gaskets, so I have that to worry about too!

Isham, you were lucky that is all that happened. You could have been "pogo"ed off your bike! This happened to one of the Arizona crew. He is still recovering from the accident.

It is recommended (from the service manual) that the front clamp be replaced any time the muffler is removed and replaced onto the bike.

Are you going to replace your belt with the new version that is supposed to be bullet proof?

Could you clarify replacing the front clamp? Do you mean the big clamp that goes around the muffler? Or is it the clamp that clamps the muffler to the pipe?

I have my muffler off for some mods and I don't want stuff falling off the bike this spring.

B-loose

BTW,

I was having problems losing bolts on my chin faring after the first time I took it off for an oil change. I now locktite them whenever I take them off and the problem is solved.

When I got the bike I didn't have the clamp up front. If someone knows the length of It I could get something that works.

I want to get the new type belt but I haven't had time to source the parts. A stock belt is 150. To upgrade I need a new rear sprocket and drive pully. Total is probably way out of my price range. It might be cheaper to go chain.

The big clamp that holds the muffler to the bracket undeneath. Not the clamp holding the header pipe to the muffler....
