Hey Everyone, reserve the Date! It's official! BBQ and Buell show at Tat and Maria's house in Apple Valley, home of the American Sport Bike parts and accessories.

RESERVE .....Sunday, May 27, 2001

As tradition has it, a great bike ride will bring us to Tat's house. Darryl "Sparky" Salmon has dug up an old ride that starts in Oceanside and ends at Tat's. This is the original "Mother of All Rides".

Riders wishing to begin at the beginning should be at Harleys House of Harleys in Oceanside ready to depart at 9:00 AM SHARP. To view the route, go to Sparkys web page, click on maps (found at the bottom of his page) and click on "mother of all rides I" maps. Go to the following:

http://home.earthlink.net/~dmsv2win/

For those of you not interested in the whole ride, a few of us are working on an abbreviated addition. Check here later for details.

Members of the American Thunderbike Club, the most recent issue in the mail right now (see page 11) features pictures of the last years BBQ at Tat and Maria's. We had a great time!

TAT WANTS A HEAD COUNT TO HELP SHOP FOR FOOD: DO THE FOLLOWING: CALL TAT AT (760) 946-3379, OR FAX HIM AT (760)946-3479 AND LET HIM KNOW HOW MANY ARE COMING. HE NEEDS THIS INFO NO LATER THAN MAY 19TH.

See everyone at Tat and Maria's, the home of American Sport Bike on May 27, 2001, Sunday.
Ride safe,

Scott Page

Ride Sunday May 20th at 8:30 am at San Diego Harley Davidson-Buell.
There will also be a meeting before the ride for a new Brag chapter sdhd&b is sponsoring.
Fread Finnerly is asking for volunteers to help keep the group organized. so... if you are interested in helping to develop a new brag chapter this would be a great chance for you.
Besides it should be a great ride!

Sunday Sunday Sunday!
The portion of the Socal contingent that will not be riding down to Oceanside for the Mother of all Rides is expected to join us at Glendale HD/Buell!
We will be leaving at 9am for a Super-Mega-twisty run to Tats through top secret military test sites, cyanide pits, and nuclear waste dumps. And once we finally get out of Glendale we're getting ourselves into premium roads and scenery. Maps of the top secret route will be available the morning of the ride.

The Mother of All Rides Revisited Ride Report

The SCAB ride to Tat's 3rd Annual Customer Appreciation BBQ was chosen to be a repeat of Big J's "Mother of All Rides" which is a collection of 4 previous successful rides we've done in the past. Whereas last year the 2nd & 3rd leg of Idyllwild was freezing fog and the 4th leg thru Big Bear got snowed out, all we had to contend with this year was a little white out fog & drizzle on the 4th leg thru Oak Glen.

My ride started out from Bartels in Marina Del Rey on the premise that likewise demented Buell riders would want to make a grand tour thru 5 counties of Southern Calif to go to a party. As it turned out the smart ones headed to join the BRAG riders led by Matty of Glendale HD/Buell to do a run on the Crest to Tat's.

No problem. I headed out to Temecula to intercept Jerry Johnson who was leading the group out of Oceanside Buell. I pulled into the gas station in Temecula, gassed up and waited and waited. 45 minutes later and no Jerry. 3 other Buellers showed up kinda late, mentioned something about going to ASB and then went inside the restaurant. Oh well. I knew something was wrong and I had to leave now if I was going to catch up with Jerry at the lunch stop. As I was leaving town I passed a Mobil station when it hit me. Oh sh**! I was waiting at the wrong gas station! I was at the Texaco station where the SCABs met for the first time 2 years ago to ride to Idyllwild. If I would have looked at my own map, I would have known to go to the Mobil station. Grrrr.

Now I knew what the score was. I had to make up 45 minutes in the next 55 miles on the winding R3 and the smooth switchbacks up 74 into Idyllwild. The only problem was dense fog on R3 but that cleared up when I got to Hemet. The ascent up 74 was fun, passing traffic swiftly as they politely moved over enough for me to squirt by without crossing over the double yellow. I was grateful. In Idyllwild I saw a pack of bikes parked at an outside deli. X1's, S3's, M2's, S1's wow! Here they were just finishing lunch. Cool! I told Jerry about the bonehead goof I did. We laughed.

The ride on 243 out of Idyllwild was mucho fun following Glenn H on his X1. He was smooth in the turns. Easy to follow. There were slight gusting side winds blowing light fog from a cloud that we were going through on the downhill run to the valley floor. In no time at all we were gathered at the foot of the 243 and ready to burst on the 10 freeway towards Beaumont.

There we gassed up and prepared for some wet weather as Art the Birdman joined us and told of snow, rain, thunder and lightning ahead. Well we figured that Art was probably exaggerating a little but those who had rain gear put it on anyhow. Smart move. As we headed to the Oak Glen loop we ran up into another cloud with its fog, drizzle and wet pavement. That lasted for about a half an hour. After that our vision and the smooth sweepers leading to Big Bear cleared up beautifully and the chase was on once again. It was awesome watching Jerry, Don Savagetino, Glen, & Andy on his Busa making haste in the mountain curves. Once in big Bear we regrouped. Those who wore rain gear stripped it off and prepared for the descent into the welcome heat of the high desert.

Highway 18 out of Big Bear was a spectacular contrast to the smooth sweepers, scented pine trees and cool air of the mountain roads as we soon found out with the first signs that said 11% grade and 10 mph curves. After this scenic chicane we encountered looong downhill straights where many of us saw the far side of 110+ mph for miles. Yee Haw!! This got the adrenaline pumping for a spirited romp thru the quiet, almost deserted town of Apple Valley to the festive atmosphere at Tat's Customer Appreciation BBQ. Let's do it again!

Reg Kitrelle, the guest speaker at Tat's BBQ, mentioned a BattleTrax event to be held at the Santa Monica airport in June. Today I spoke with Erich Martin, Buell salesman at Bartels', and this event has been called off. No word on when it may be rescheduled.

If there are any further developments, I'll post it here.

Motorcycle campers, this is for you!

Songdog Summer Rally, Sat August 4th - Brickyard Jones will shred the nights sky with their full blown blues attitude. Reservations are required. 1-800-766-2461 or online reservations. $60 includes snacks, dinner, liquids, entertainment, bonfire, camping, breakfast and a souvenir beer mug for the first 150 people to register! The food served is all you can eat and drink tri-tip/chicken BBQ with brontosaurus size ribs for appetizers and all the usual stuff that the Songdog provides to round out an excellent meal including breakfast on Sunday. Whew! You won't go away hungry.

Why do I keep coming back to do the Songdog Rallies? I attended one of their first rallies back in 1985. It was the overnight stop on a 2 day poker run by the TRW MC Club. The impact of camping out by your motorcycle among the junipers on that gorgeous mesa, sitting around the campfire, sharing stories of the day's adventures with a hundred other riders while watching steaks cook on the grill left a pleasant memory.

Well, it's the same these days only better. They have 3 rallies a year -- always the first weekend in May, August & October. The ranch now has a lodge, a stage, a HUGE grill, 2 shaded rows of picnic tables, 2 outhouses, running water, and you can still pitch your tent anywhere. All that's left is to plan a scenic backroad ride to the ranch and brag about it when you get there.

I've got a dandy backroad trip in mind that's about 230 miles from Bartels' to the Songdog. So if anybody wants to join me on a Buellistic motorcycle camping trip while overlooking stunning ocean vistas from atop mountain ridges and snaking through tree covered canyons, make a reservation & give me a shout.

LA / San Fernando Valley folks - there's an informal gathering of sportbike riders at a Starbuck's in Woodland Hills on the NE corner of Ventura and Topanga every Wednesday around 8pm. I've yet to see a single Buell there.

Here's a map link:

I'll be there (bikeless until my motor un-fries itself) for the next couple of Wednesdays. Leave word here if you're planning on being there.

Well, I was at Starbuck's last night. One Buell quickly went through the parking lot then turned south on Topanga. Too dark to tell what it was - an S1 maybe?

Just a reminder. I'll be at the Starbuck's on Topanga and Ventura again tomorrow night. Go to my previous post here for a map.

Once again I'll likely be bikeless. I'll try to wear some Buell clothing. I'll be there from around 8 (people start trickling) till maybe 9:30 or so.

Mark this on your ride calendar:

Sept 16, Canyon Ride to AMA SBK Race Willow Springs. Starting from Glendale HD/B, meet 7:30, leave 8 am. Possibly we'll stop for breakfast along the way.

This may be your last chance to see the VR1000 in action this year, maybe forever.

HAS ANYONE ELSE READ THIS CRAP!!!!!!!!!

The official press release follows:

Harley-Davidson announced today the Company has chosen to end its
factory VR1000 Superbike racing program and retire from the American
Motorcycle Association (AMA) Superbike series after the final round of
the 2001 season at Virginia International Raceway on September 28-30...

"Our development team took a hard look at rebuilding the program this
year, and what it would take to bring the VR 1000 to a competitive level
and replace it with a new design. Harley-Davidson has determined the
resources required to do that are simply too costly to pursue given our
other business priorities," said Baker.

Well, Maybe they will finally do the right thing and Create a Buell
motorcycle to race in its place!!!!!

Quite honestly, I think Eric Buell should demand it!!! Picotte is still under
contract for another 2 years with HD. Can you imagine the possibilities
with Pascal on an Eric Buell creation???????

Just found this on motorcycle online. please sign this and let HD know
how all the Buelligans really feel!!!

http://www.petitiononline.com/hdb/petition.html

All people who want to see an American AMA Superbike win, sign this!

thanks

Anyway, show your Buells, people!
