Has anyone upgraded the 2003 XB belt guards to the 2004 model guards ? Will it work or should the whimpie 2003 belt be guarded by the massive 03 guard ?
Thanks,
PMC 03' XB9s

I think if you are willing, you can roll the dice and go without the belt guards. It looks better and I know several guys with 03's and 10,000 plus miles with no problems.

Percyco,
There are a couple of problems with the '04 belt guards on the '03, stemming mainly from the fact that the sprocket on the '04 is larger than the '03, so I would be surprised if it would fit.

To lighten up the look of your rear wheel, you might want to just remove the black paint from your rear sprocket, and maybe mount it with the Chrome bolts.
It would look like this:

ss

If you want to remove the guards, I think I would start with the top guard. It always seemed to me that the bottom guard does most of the work of keeping junk off the belt, but I haven't tested this hypothesis, having lost one belt under heavy acceleration, I don't care to lose another.

Going naked looks nice, your results may vary with the quality of the roads you ride on.

My profile pic shows my 03' R w/ upgraded sprockets and 06' belt with lower guard and diamond highlight rear sprocket.

I don't have any belt guards at all. I broke a belt playing wheelie king in a parking lot with no ill affects. No pain, no damage.

I have a love hate thing with the belt these days. I am scared of it braking mid corner at speed........
