I would like to compile as many differences between the 2 motors mechanical specs as possible. Please feel free to list the differences between the new xb motor and the current sportster motor. I know without a doubt this is the best place to get as many detailed inputs as possible. So if you got one you know of and it isnt listed already, please post it. Thanks!!

The biggest difference would be that Erik B. has a say in what goes into our motor, that would explain why it is a much better motor.

I might be comparing an apple with an orange but...Mom has an 06 883, and I have my 06 12R. While both differnt cc class, I noticed the 12R has more acceleration power than the 883, and more all-around power. the 883 is also carb injected as opposed to fuel injected XB's. I dont know if they make a FI 883 or not. One thing I noticed about the 883 is that it has no tach so I am uncertain of its RPM properties in contrast to the XB engine.

Pretty much everythin except the configuration.

The XB has oil squirters, neater valve springs, a reed valve oil pump "scavenger"...

All XB's have the exact same cam grind as the current XL1200's. But the 883's have very mild cams, less lift than even the Blast cams. The current XL1200's make the most HP of any Evo XL. The XL1200 heads and valves are very similar to an XB's as well.

From what I've been told the new sporty engines are more Buell than vice versa. HD saw what the Buell engines were pushing and thought they would big brother piggy back from what I've heard. Can't say that I blame them.

Of course thats true, the trickle down theory. But they are ALL Harley engines ! Buell Doesn't make engines, never did, even the RW750 was a British engine that Erik bought out (and tried to fix the flaws of).
And the XBRR is Harley designed and built too. Buell is just a chassis designer, and a very good one at that. But the engines are all In-House Harley.

I agree at this point there is now more Buell in a Sporster that there is Sporster in a Buell. All Sporsters use the Buell head casting and engine case castings. The machining is different and yes everything is made by H-D, but is was the Buell Engineers that made the manfacturing designs to reduce cost and improve the performance at the same time. I understand that the XB port design has now found it's way to the H-D Twin Cam line also. It will be interesting to see what ECM H-D uses when the Sporsters move to FI? ... Terry

Terry, not all Buell Engines designs(Built by Harley) were designed by Buell...
http://www.design-concepts.com/work/projects/buell_thorengine.php
The Blast P3 engine was designed by :
Design Concepts, Inc.
5301 Buttonwood Dr.
Madison WI 53718
Phone/ 608 221 2623
TollFree/ 800 344 2623

They also designed the blast wheels.
http://www.design-concepts.com/work/projects/buell_thorwheel.php

And it's kind of funny, since "Design Concepts" designed the P3 motor, how come the XB motor is such a close design copy of that engine ?

Btw Terry, the post '04 XL's don't use the same engine case castings as the XB's. The new XL castings are HUGE to accomodate the rubber mounts.

It is absolute BS that Design Concepts designed the P3 engine. They are a contract house that was hired to do some of the drawings due to the work overload. Well, I suppose one day the book will be written that tells the whole story, but in the meantime, it sure is frustrating to have people write that they "know" stuff when it isn't true.

Well then Mr.Anony, maybe if it's not true, you should ask "Design Concepts" to remove that material from their Website then ?

Since we seem to have the horses mouth(so to speak) here, can you tell us which motor came first, the P3 or the XB ?

And did I say I "know" stuff ? I just reported what is out there in public domain. And they also state that their client for the engine was Harley DavidsonŽ- not Buell. Although they stated that BuellŽ was their client for the wheels.

Maybe you should monitor your "contract house" more carefully.

Wyckedflesh, do you have something to add ?
I meant the RR motor, if thats what you're banging your head about ? There is nothing that radical about about the RR engine, except maybe the fuel injection. Most of the hot rodding tech for that engine probably came from the same crew that does the XR750 motors ?

But I'm sure Mr. Anony will correct me if I'm guessing wrong. After all, we're still waiting for the book to come out ;)

Hey Bobby, If Julia Child comes to your house and makes dinner, are you going to claim that it's the work of "your kitchen"?

I see a carefully worded website that doesn't state exactly what they did for the project.

Josh, I'd say- Eeek, a Ghost is cooking me dinner ! Julia Child died in 2004.

Btw, I've always wondered the purpose for the "Anony" feature ? Why can't these special/ insiteful people reveal who they are ?

Nice sidestep. Fine - pick a famous living cook if you find it more likely they'll show up at your house to prove a point some guy made on an Internet forum.

Then answer the question.

I wasn't trying to rattle cages. In fact, I can't count the times I've had Harley riders tell me i'm riding a re-worked sportster. They never want to seem to race though. Sorry if I offended.

Bobby my point is not that the part numbers are the same or even the castings. I beleve that the engineering department at Buell has brought a different type of thinking to a lot of the H-D products. The XB improved shifting transmission, allowed no trap door and saved money at the same time. It was nice to see H-D pick up on many of those designs. I think "Covey" calls that Synergy and it will help the H-D Bottom Line. Also I think the new Sporsters are one of the best bikes H-D makes, so let's see where they take the Sporster Fuel Injection ... Terry

Thats cool Terry : ) And I agree about the NEW Sportsters.

BTW- I just found an email from Blake in the yahoo email account I hardly check. He said he removed my post/email from the H-D engineer, because he was worried that he didn't want it posted on a public forum. But I said it was ok.
