Today I got really pissed off when I went to the dealership to upgrade from my 06 CityX to an SS, purely for the longer, more comfortable seating arrangement, since I am occasionally carrying a cute passenger now. I rode in, confident that I'd get top dollar for my bike, since they were soooo happy to sell it to me, with such word phrases as "it'l hold value as good as a Harley!" and other blasphemy. Of course, since purchasing it, I've been on this particular dealer's service intervals, and it is in perfect shape. Its an 06 XB9SX with black translucent bodywork, and other then the removed hand guards, removed unnecessary reflectors, removed pasta-strainer in the back and the replaced turn signals with nicer, smaller LED lights, the bike is perfect. Currently shows 2600 miles on it, and I've owned it new since 11/05 (yes I ride a lot) It has never been down or scratched. My question is: Whats it worth? Either in trade or in sell...I either want an XB12SS or an 06 Triumph Sprint ST (thats a badass bike you guys!) I really want to know, since the dealer wants me to take 6500-7000 for it, and pay full rip for the new SS. And Triumph was saying 6500 too. They say that the last buell they traded on went for exactly what they bought it at, which was about 6000, and it was an 05, with the same miles as mine, and same condition. And regarding the Harley dealer, they said no more then 7000 because they buy NEW XB9SX's from the factory for only 6800 something (this particular sales guy was REALLY pissing me off, spouting incoherent reasons for such a low price, he even related the fact that I didn't pay retail last time to the reason why the trade would be less (this confounded me,..I paid 8300 +setup +fees and such for my XB9 in November, if I remember right, it was because Harley credit capped the total purchase loan price, and they decided to go ahead and do the deal anyway...) but I can't see how getting a better then normal deal on my last one should be in anyway related to my new one...a value is a value and a trade is a trade...

Anyway, whats it worth guys? The bike on vegas strip, taking pics

the 9's drop value quicker than a 12.

I've seen low milage 9's sell on ebay for 5,000 granted they are 2003 models. but a xb9 is an xb9.

It might be cheaper to find a good custom fabricator. And just have a better tail section fabbed up. Your looking at loosing money on the xb9 to buy a new xb12 and in a few months you will have lost value of the xb12.. Potential loss of 4-5,000 in the long run. check the value of a Ss thats 4 months old/used.

I agree, they don't sound far off.

Modifications of any kind also decrease resale value.
What suits your taste is not always what another buyer will want.

Where to start on this one?
First off new ones cost us more than 6800.00(I wish there was 2000.00 in markup!)

You paid 8300.00 for the bike. The frt, setup, taxes and such have no meaning,it's just stuff you pay when you buy a bike. I know, it was money you paid but you paid 8300.00 for the bike.

You are correct that you got a good deal on it new and that has no bearing on the trade value.
If you paid $1.00 for it when new that would not make it worth only .75 cents now.
It would be the same thing if you paid 50,000 for it new, that would not make it worth 40,000 now.
What a bike is worth today has nothing to do with what was paid for it.

The 6500.00-7000.00 on trade sounds pretty fair. I do not have all the info I need here at home to determine an exact amount.
The bike is now a used bike with less warranty.

You paid 8300.00
Trade is 7000.00
Depreciation of 1300.00
Try to see of they would be willing to drop 500.00 off the new Ss or waive the frt and setup.
There should still be a little "wiggle room" on the deal if they want to keep you as a customer.

I'm going to be in Vegas this week at HD and Buell school.

I wasn't pissed, mearly curious on what my trade in for my XB9SX with 24,700 miles on it for a Uly. The sales man was upfront in that it would hurt me in the end due to still oweing on it. Trade in was lower that what I owed.

Eh, I'll just pay it off and get a second bike.

Yeah, but the sheer utility and quality that the Triumph has really makes me want to go that way instead. It is an amazing bike. Plus, the B.S. from the dealership makes me weary of purchasing an HD/Buell product again. Considering that if a harley loses its value less, but I get chopped for having a Buell...its a lose/lose situation. The same sales guy was eager to get me into a sportster too, and that should be of no suprise to you guys "We can get you into a real Harley if you'd like." Pshsshtt... I'll just go triple cylinder on this one, I think. At least a triumph DOES hold its value, instead of just saying it will.

dunno, its all a little differnet when you've had a night to sleep on it.

TOTAL PRICE $10,899

Doesn't look like Triumph does much better according to NADA.
If you had bought a new Sprint ST at 600.00 off list like you did the Buell you would've paid 10,299.00

The bike now would be worth MAYBE 8000.00 so you would've lost 2299.00
Even if they would give you top retail price for an 05,since yours in this example would be an 06 you would still have lost 1649.00

They should have never told you Buells hold their value like a Harley, they knew better when they told you that. They lied to you.
No bike holds value like a Harley and even that is slipping compared to the way it was 5 years ago.

Seems a bit low to me, KBB lists my 2003 XB9S for $6150. Why would i get $1265 more then a 2005 model when mines 2 years older. I have less miles though, 1581.

Huh? $6150 for a used '03 9S? You gotta be lookin' at retail and no one pays retail.

Wheel your 9 into ANY dealer, HD, Honda, whatever, and ask them what it's worth to them. You'll be insulted.

I've never heard of any vehicle, two wheeled or four that holds it's value. Exception of course being a mint condition classic or sleek italian sled. The point is that the moment you drive or ride off the dealer lot, the value of your new vehicle has dropped dramatically.
I payed full msrp for my 12Scg. After waiting for almost 5 years for a chance to get a Buell I jumped at an opportunity & forewent haggling. The moment I rode away, My 10K bike became worth about 8K.

That's why I bought mine used, I guess... 2 yr old 2004 XB12S w/ 4.8K miles for about $5700. Buell do depreciate pretty quickly, unfortunately. I'll have to say 6500-7000 was a decent deal.

=)

My dealer can't give away there XB12R's they have up here. There is still plenty of new 04' 05's left.

With the amount of mileage on your bike your getting an excellent trade in value. Personally i wouldn't look at a bike that has more than 8k on it.

I'm a salesmanager at a car dealer and have been in the business for 16 years. Some things to consider:

- If you could buy your bike new for $8300 how much would you pay for a used one with 2500 miles on it? You like most would expect it to be at least $500 cheaper - maybe even a $1000

- If you ran your own business how much of a profit margin do you think you would have to make to pay rent on a nice retail showroom, pay the employees, your utilities and taxes and still manage to make a profit? Do you think you could make it work on 7-10% profit?

Lanson - sounds like you didn't get a good sales rep who probably doesn't deserve your business but don't begrudge your dealer from making a fair profit. The numbers sound reasonable - they need to sell a lot of bikes at those levels to pay the bills. Remember profit isn't a dirty word and they need to make one if they're going to be there tomorrow, next month or next year to help you when you need it.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I thank you all for your input and insight.
Good call on the Triumph value thing, but please keep in mind that 06 was a good improvement year for the ST, and they have a 2 year warranty now, which, I believe just like Buell, should help values and sales in general.
I too am in sales, and have also sold cars and lots of other things. So, no, profit is not a bad word, since it pays my bills, directly.

However...I calculated my loses, and here's what I got: I've owned the bike new since 11/05. It was somewhere in the middle of the month, but lets just say it was 11/1/05 for conversation's sake. Now, lets say I trade it in on 3/1/05, or 4 months from date of purchase. Retail is 8999.95, and indeed most people pay retail, but I sent this guy some referrals on HD's so I guess I did better then average. Now lets say they gave me 6500 on trade, which is what most of the people seemed to say. I'd never sell it for that and buy their's retail, but lets assume its 6500 regardless. That means, that in 1/3 of a year, and 3000 miles later, I've lost $2500, or about 625 a month, or about $20 a DAY. Also, I've spent about 83 cents a mile, if you'd like to think of it that way. IMO, thats terrible. Thats ON TOP of paying for it monthly at $200. Thats 800 less interest blah blah,.. So, I've depreciated roughly 3 times the speed of payoff... Now since I bought the bike a few bucks cheaper, these figures are anti-ideal..in reality it was 450 per month, 15 bucks a day, and 60 cents a mile loss... of course add interest and suddenly we're talking about the same original figures again.

So, I planned on putting much more down this time around, thanks to Income Tax Refund, ...but the math is souring me up a bit. I guess I figured mathmatically that I would get 7250-7500 for it, and They'd sell it for 8300-8400, (remember that usually they don't budge on msrp on new bikes, plus the setup, delivery, blah...its about 2000 more value then a new bike with these figures.., and the dealer is pulling roughly 10-11% plus some pack room...And the bike is still in excellent condition, and the tires are 85% or so, and its unmolested. (I have all the original parts, I could restore it to OE spec if I needed to)

Math wise, if I sold it for 7250, I'm only out 262.50 a month, 8.75 a day, 35 cents a mile. A little more acceptable to me, IMO.

I guess either way I lose, but I really dislike losing a LOT of money..I'd rather just spend it on crazy vegas nights or casino running...

In the end, it comes down to the question of: do they want to sell me another bike or not. Because, if Triumph is the way I go, or if its a Long XB, I don't want to do it again. The ONLY reason I ended up with an XB9 in the first place was that I was uncomfortable riding my first time ever in life on a 1200cc motor, and honestly the 9 was even a little daunting. Of course, as most of us know, the bike is forgiving, and I learned well and since I ride every single day, sometimes for hours on end, I've become more confident and smooth, and I'm sure that I could now pilot either of the two bikes I'm after.

Oh, and I suppose, officially... My bike is for sale, and I'm open to takers! LOL!

Thanks DaveS and other contributers for your views, as it is refreshing to see things from different points of view. One thing is for sure, this bike IS too small for me, so one way or another, it will be going soon. Taking a loss (monetarilly) sometimes is worth it if I have enough room for a significant other person with me to enjoy the essense and feel of riding. Its truely a mastercard moment:

Buell 06 City-X, new - $8300
Deprecation upon trade in - $1800
New Bike - $10,900

Being able to actually ride a bike with your girl not smashing your nuts into the tank...PRICELESS!!

You might want to look at this. Dont trade it in. Sell it to a private individual wich will definetly get you more than trade in value. Then look for a slightly used. Such as 2500 miles like what you have now and with as many months left on the warranty as you bike currently does. I bet if you patient and do this you could trade up for peanuts compared to what the dealer is gonna give you.
Good luck

the only way to not loose value on buying a bike is to buy a nice used bike to begin with...

Let the first guy loose the intial value. Let the first guy buy all the pretty go faster parts...

Sell your bike if you want a larger bike. But don't rush out and buy a brand new bike. Save some cash look around and buy a used bike...
