Help, I blew my belt off on the way home today, I would think 3700 miles is a little low for belt life!!! I have extended warranty, is this considered a warranty issue? I don't even ride in the rain for crissakes, I sure would expect a belt on a stock engined M2 ridden only in fair weather to last a butt-load longer than 3700 miles!! What is the procedure for replacing the belt myself? Tim | ||

Squeeking belt... I can relate to that, mine seems to come and go, I was thinking it was just something that I had neglected or such. I have some belt dressing and I was thinking of using that, but one of my Harley shadetree mech's said no way don't do that. He never said why not, so I am still stumped on how to get rid of it. | ||

Finnally did it, broke my belt. Does any one know of part numbers or kits for chain drive conversion other than the one from ASB (calm down Blake) I would love to help out our sponsors BUT... three hundred dollars is a bit much. | ||

Then we go to the point of $300 again. A 560 DID chain and Two sprokets are not $300 does any one have part numbers or know of the sprokets to match the bolt patterns and spacers etc. | ||

You can get the spacer from any Harley dealer. The spacer is a stock Sportster unit from when they used chain drive. I think you can find it in the '91 Sportster parts book. Sprocket Specialists has the rear (stock Sportster measurements on the bolts). Can't remember who's front I used, but they are easily available if you look. Unfortunatly Blake, this is one of those times when Tat was just to high for me. His conversion kit runs pretty high. I was able to put together everything I needed for less than half the money. bighairyralph | ||

I talked to Tat of ASB. His kit requires no spacer. The ASB sprockets already have the right sized hole. | ||

Ralp i did just that got a bunch of part nubers through renthal etc. I am gonna do it next time the belt breaks. I just bought another cause my shop doesn't have the sprokets and the Jap shop we own is stock full of morons. Tried giving me the number to the shop i work at. Lazy dumb squids. Spidey, you are going to need a way bigger front sprocket than a 22 to clear your aluminum swingarm. I would suggest a 25 tooth. Sticking with the belt is a much better choice. Blake, the spacer costs in the area of $20 (I made mine anyway). The spacer is just that, the sprockets have the correct tooth pattern to engage the output shaft. I like Tat, I've traded Tat my money for his stuff and look forward to doing it again. bighairyralph | ||

how long is the drive belt suppposed to last? I have a 2001 M2 and the belt snapped yesterday and I only have 6500 miles on the bike. | ||

I have 18000km with no problems YET, should I be worried. I kinda like to lift the front wheel. I have a neighbor with a Electra Glide and there was about 120 000km on his before he changed it. Bill | ||

Belt life: According to a certain Jeremy Pick from Buell and published in the January 2001 edition of Superbike (UK). "Up to 50,000 miles...20,000 odd if you`re an animal and up to 50,000 miles with a bit of care and maintenance." My 99' S3T accumlated 25,000 miles in 14 months with no drive belt issues. My current X-1 00' has 30,000 miles in 24 months and no drive belt issues. I'm no wheelie monster but I do love the drive out of the corners. YRMV Neil S. | ||

My 99 S3T has 42,000 on the belt with no issues, many 2-up and fully loaded, some drag racing, some track days. People only post when they have problems, thus most posts are about problems. Josh | ||

Tough technical Question, Does anyone know the stock gearing on a 97 S-3? I noticed in the brochure(1998), that the lightning and cyclone are geared lower than the S-3. Would like to get mine lower since I do a fair amount of around towning and this set up is a bit steep. Any help appreciated, TB | ||

Thanks Russ, just what I was looking for. I'm wondering what the lightning runs to get the 2.26 to 1 ratio. Jmartz, did going to the smaller sprocket (27 tooth), require a different belt or is there enough adjustment?? If I could get away without changing the belt size I'm interested in your sprocket. | ||

So I've got a 'bolt with roughly 3700 miles on it. The belt has developed a split down the center (along the length, not the width, thank goodness), about 2 inches long. It's getting dropped off at the dealer tomorrow, but I was wondering if any other firebolt riders have had this happen. I know the early pre-release demos had trouble with snapping belts, but I haven't heard about it being a problem with the actual release models. -Geof | ||

TB: No need for a new belt. The rear wheel will have to be moved back but only very slightly. You'll love the 26. The peice is exquisite with maybe 1/5 the weight of the original stock 27. |
