Has anyone had his problem... Walked into the shed the other day and noticed my '99 X1's tail light (and parking light on closer inspection) on, by themselves, without a key in the ignition. I did a double-take, as you would, and by the time I looked again they'd gone off. Sure enough, later the same day, the same thing - parking lights come on by themselves for about 30 secs, then go out. I did the usual checks, but could find no logical explanation. Bad news is, it's happened enough to completely flatten the battery (0 Volts), and I'm now in the process of (hopefully) bringing it back to life. Any info greatly appreciated. Wow. Sounds like a poltergeist in your garage. Never heard of such a thing before. Could there be a short circuit in your wiring harness? Don't know why it would be intermittent, though. Damn shame it happens in the summer time! rt |

Bad ground, switch starting to go bad or starting to short out, some sort of conductive moisture bridging a gap, a worn insulation short somewhere in the wiring bridging to a hot wire. Could be almost anything. Check your wiring very closely around the switch, and near the lights, and around the steering head, looking for cracks and worn spots. |

now this thread is just another example of mis-titled threads on this board -- we have threads about foreign power adaptors (NOT about Juntas), getting into pants, trouble getting girlfriends off, and now this -- what can be learned from the fact that Road Thang and me were the foiyst to be lured here by a tagline about weird lights? harumph start unpluggin stuff, PMC, til ya find the circuit that's being energized by those darned polterguys -- sounds like some relay is self-energizing, or there's a short somewheres that trips some heat sensitive thingie after a bit -- some judicious unplugging and note taking should have the troublesome circuit located fairly quickly, I'm thinkin |

".. noticed my '99 X1's tail light (and parking light on closer inspection) on, by themselves,..." I would guess the ignition switch is at fault. (Ignition switches are a somewhat common fault, but usually fail open, or get hard to turn). The key turns a little internal copper bar that joins the power tab to the Park circuit tab (tail and parking lamp), likely it isn't turning all the way back - and is making a poor contact. Disconnect the key switch (behind the fly screen) , and see if the battery stays charged while sitting? |
