I am about to go to Mobil1 15 50 fully synthetic at 2000 miles on my 05xb12. I had the Dealership do the 1000 mile service and they put in Harley regular fluids. I have noticed that in the last 900miles on harley fluids the bike has used about 10 ozs of oil. I am hoping going to a syn oil will slow this a little. 2 questions. 1. Have people found that in going to fully synthetic oil theyre oil consumption goes down? 2. Is this enough oil being used that I should be concerned? Thanks (Message edited by sgthigg on December 26, 2005) |

1) No. 2) Merits keeping a close eye on. are you quite certain that you have been checking the oil level under exactly the same circumstances each time? My 12 does consume some oil, in the course of a spirited thousand mile day i can expect it to use half a quart. this is not a terrible thing, but would be nice NOT to have to add oil during a fast weekend ride. I plan to address the issue next fall, with a pair of 3-9/16" bore cylinders and a fresh set of rings, and i plan to break it in a little more vigorously. it was winter when i bought the bike (october) and the roads were mostly icy for the first 1000 miles, so it was broken in with very little load, and i think as a result the rings may not have seated properly. or maybe i am full of crap who knows. |

most of the oil gets shot out of the crank case breathers right into the engine. |

If you do not remove the breathers from the intake and run to a catch container you are poluting the intake charge !!! If you engine is using oil and you go to synthetic it could stop depending on what is causing the engine to use oil ??? The REASON to go to SYNTHETIC is it lubes better when you first start your engine and when you run it hard !!! If you just PUSSYFOOT around, the DINO OIL is just as good ... "i" have found the reason BUELLs use oil is the owners put too much in and they do not know how to check their OIL !!! In BUELLing LaFayette |

I've also heard of multiple bikes which are OIL HOGS stop using oil when the jugs are swapped with higher quality / more precise units. All of our Blasts have GUZZLED oil. My S2 seems pretty good - as does my 02 Dyna. But the Blasts....... -Saro |
