My 2003 Buell XB9R will not start. I put the battery back in it and top'd the fuel off and the bike just cranks and cranks!! Any ideas? Could it be the cold weather? The little screachin sound which I believe is the fuel pump is working so I don't know what it could be. I put fuel stablizer in the tank before I stored it for winter so I know it isn't that. | ||

Sounds stupid, but did you make sure the red button on the right handlebar is switched ON? Been there...done that... | ||

Yes I have, also the bike wont crank unless its on. | ||

did the fuel pump it usual screech at start-up? Did you check fuses? Is it in neutral, or are you trying to start with the clutch pulled in? Is the kick stand up or down? did your tip over switch come loose from it's mount, or unplugged? Is your motor ground strap still attached (don't laugh, It's happened) I would also check for spark. Those would be the first things I'd check. | ||

I'll second the plug thing, mine did the same thing and the plugs were fouled. | ||

1.) Fuses Good 2.) Fuel Pump is screeching 3.) Bike is in neutral 4.) Have tried starting with the clutch in and clutch out and samething. 5.) Kickstand kill switch is bypassed so it can't be that. How in the hell do you change the plugs theres no room what so ever? Where is the tip over switch at? Where is the motor ground strap if its kind underneath the seat towards the front than its still tight. Bike only has about 7k miles on it so do you think the plugs are fouled already? | ||

on the r the tip over switch is hidden by the fairing. It is right in front of the ecm. For the plugs, you should be able to access them by removing the air box. | ||

Ok got both plugs out. Does autozone/Advance auto stock these? If so any part #'s? Its definitely got to be the plugs they smell like fuel big time and are all wet. Where is the ECM located having a hard time understanding you. Hidden by the fairing? (Message edited by buellxb9r on December 20, 2005) | ||

Pull the plugs out and clean them then slap them back in. Just to see if it runs. It should at least turn on... | ||

It WILL run, trust me, I had trouble with my '04 'Bolt. I would turn the bike on and quickly throttle it a little, like in a '67 Chevy, and it would die, called dealership, they picked it up, cleaned the plugs, good as new. Within TWO days, plugs fouled again. YOu CAN clean the plugs like Isham said and it WILL start, but new plugs won't hurt. | ||

If you get it started and it fouls the plugs again, get to a dealer have them check the AFV. It should be approx. 100% += 10. If you ever run out of gas as it gets leaner due to fuel pump cavation it can drive the AFV all the way up to 150% and will foul the plugs when you gas up and restart. . ... If a customer or someone on a trip knows he ran it low on gas, we will check and reset it for free because when Buells run well it's good for business. ... Terry | ||

You need either techno-research's software, or to go to a dealership to get the AFV reset. | ||

I'm sure you already know this but I'm gonna say it anyway just to hear myself speak & maybe some one who doesn't know will read this. Don't rev the engine after you start it. Hit the the start button & don't twist the throttle. Revving the engine while it's warming up seems to be the #1 way of fouling the plugs. | ||

Here's another good tip. If you are just starting the bike in the winter for no real reason (as in you are not going for a ride), Dont start it, just leave it alone. By not letting it get to complete operating tempature, including the trans oil, you run the possiblilty of introducing moisture into the system that would normally be evaporated out by riding the bike at full temp. If you put the bike away for the winter, do just that, put it away and leave it there. | ||

Book says to replace them every 10k or every 2 years... | ||

I had my 12 in after a year (only about 4K miles)and had the race kit installed. They said the plugs were badly fouled and replaced them. The bike had been running okay, but they gave me the plugs and yes, they were pretty bad. Kind of bums me out to think they get so fouled so easily. | ||

Like stated above, if you twist the throttle during start-up, you will foul 'em quickly (Message edited by cochise on December 24, 2005) |
