Well, after years of saving up I finally got a great deal on a used 2000 M2 with 1700 km on it. I bought it last winter and put 8000 more km during this great summer.

Last friday some "puts" in a stupid minivan (I hate f@#!ing minivans)turned into my lane at the last possible second giving me next to no time to react. I had time to brake hard, countersteer and bang... off I go to the hospital. I'm pretty sore all over but nothing broken. I'll take this opportunity to thank the following folks:

The ambulance dudes that took care of me.
Technic for my sore but unbroken knuckles, elbow, shoulder and knee.
Arai for my face. (those visors are freakin' tough)

Today I got the bad news I was expecting from my insurance company. The bike is a write off.

I live in Canada and Buells are hard to come by. I bought mine for $9500 cdn. There is one new M2 at the dealer but I can't afford the $14000.

I might buy the thing back from the insurance company and rebuild it during the winter. Most of it should be straight bolt-on (forks, tank, seat, engine covers). I'll have to check if the frame is bent first.

But then again I could buy a brand new SV1000 with the money and save myself a whole lot of assle. My M2 wasn't the most reliable bike to start with.

I sure will miss being the center of attention even when surrounded by more expensive/"exotic" bikes.

I guess I'v got a while to make up my mind while the bruising and limping goes away.

I don't know, that sv looks pretty tasty....I'd give myself a chance to heal and see what the SV is all about. Winter's almost here anyway...

ps to Tavs: nice looking Cyclone, must be a hoot up on the Crest (and probably always draws a crowd at Newcomb's, right), so why the props to the SV?

just curious.

Mario...Let me get this straight...New M2 in Canada is $14,000 CAD and for the insurance proceeds you can get a new SV1000...How much are they in CAD's?...You do know that the tube frame bikes have been discontinued?...Take a look on eBay...There's a 2000 M2 asking $3,933 CAD and no bids...So if you decide you want to stay with a Buell you should be able to do so on the cheap...

See Ya!

Thanks for the lead Bob. I'll definitely be shopping there when the time comes.

You're right to scratch your head. The insurance proceeds don't cover the $11,799 that an SV will cost but it’s still $2,000 cheaper than the Cyclone.

I am aware that the tube frame bikes have been discontinued and that is the main argument for the Cyclone at the moment. Harley usually come up with good financing rates during the winter. I might take advantage of that.

Rudebike, Blake, Ferris, Psychobueller and Racerboy; after three sleepless nights I've come to the inevitable conclusion that you guys are right. I'm not ready to give up.

Tavs, your words say SV but your bike says Buell all the way. That is one nice interpretation of the M2. Do you have a detailed description of the work done to your M2 anywhere?

Mario.

Mario666,

I was wondering would it be cheaper to come to US and buy a bike and ride it back?
As for the new SV1000. Go for it. I would have to put the Buell to rest. Buy the SV. After all it would be a new bike and it would be paid for and it would be reliable...
You could buy back the M2. But is sounds like you would have to put a lot of money into to get it running again and it would have a salvage title making it worthless down the road to sale. And most bikes don't ride the same after a head on with a wall of steel. At least all my bikes never did ride the same...

Ferris, Mario, et al.:

I've been thinking of supplementing my bike with a Falco, but the SV1000 may be my ticket to the same place at a cheaper price. Don't get me wrong, I love my bike and I've got too much work invested into it to part with it, but I love the sound of those twins as well! I don't have any special write-up of my bike, but Steve of DCBrag put some of my pics at his site:

http://www.dcbrag.org/M2Gus.htm

I'm still working on it, but its so much fun that I'm sure its going to take a while to finish it.

Geof: Bads1 is right, I got mine from ASB; they're about $30 each, if I remember correctly. I put them on right when I got my bike and they paid for themselves the time I parked my bike and forgot to put the kickstand down...not a scratch on the bike and the mirrors didn't break! Excellent product.

Mario...I have to be straight with you...There are a lot of us who are really peeved that Buell discontinued our scoots and some of us who would really like to sell and get into another bike even, GASP, not a Buell...But, in most cases, because the market has dropped from under used Buell's we can't afford to sell...So think hard, because you may be in a very unique position with insurance proceeds in your wallet...That mini-van may have really done you a offhanded favor...

See Ya!

But Bob, you'll sell just because they discontinued the tube frames? I can see selling cause it doesn't do what you need (course I'm not the one with *two* touring bikes :)) but not just 'cause they discontinued the model I ride.

Mario, they're cheap buy 'em up!

Josh
And the rumors are not true that I just sold my Firebird for the same reason

To tell you guys the truth, if I was to purchase an SV (the sensible thing to do) I’d miss the attitude of the Buell. If I don’t replace my M2 now and get an SV (or Monster or…) I’ll eventually regret it and by that time M2s will be rare and beaten-up old machines.

On the other hand, if I do get an M2 now and eventually need something more reliable, there will be tons of UJMs to choose from. But I’ll probably give up riding all together at that point because motorcycling isn’t about reliability or sensibility.

Mario.

Mario,

Last week I was in a dealership in two Buell Dealerships in Ontario and came across a real sweet deal on a 1998 S3 with a factory race kit. There was also a 2000 X1 milenium edition on the floor in great shape too. I do have a picture of the S3 somewhere on my computer. This bike was in excellent condition and very close to Quebec. I also know where you can get a couple of new on the floor 1999 & 2000 models in Atlantic Canada as well. I have been considering a second Buell so I know where a few are hiding out but I am now going to wait until the spring to make a purchase.

E-mail me and I will give you the full details where these bikes are.

Get the SV. Sometime in the future you might find a cheap Buell for a "Kit Bike". I had to make the choice to leave Buell too. Happy I did but I still have that broken down thing, can't give it up.

Blackie, on your web site you've posted pix of your Buell as recently as two weeks ago, showing work you're doing on the fairing.

why bother working on the piece of shit if it's broken down?

isn't there an FZ1 site somewhere out there you can bash Buells on?

Bads1

I have the stock wheels that have been polished on my S1. Upkeep on them has not been a problem. I took the time when I picked it up to do a real good cleaning and hand polish. I waxed them real good with a liquid wax afterwards. In the past three months all I have needed to do was wash them and re-wax when I clean the bike. It looks like a good cleaning/polish/waxing to start with will minimize the efforts expended
later. Just mho here though. I prefer the polished look over the chrome thing

Hey Mario,
Do your self a favor and check out a local Ducati shop and a BMW shop. BMW has a great test ride program and they are making some really fantastic bikes beyond the traditional cruiser/touring stuff. Ducati offers you many choices to replace your M2...I opted for a 900SS, you may like the M900's. On paper, the Ducati's are powered down from the Buell's but for rideability, dependability and WOW factor, keep the Duc's in mind.
And like racerboy mentioned, watch ebay if you simply must have another Buell. M2's are fantastic, I had one. The S3's are a notch up, waaay up and the comfort factor is remarkable.
You have some nice options, no need to jump quickly. Heal well, ride safely, death to the minivans!
