Anyone else had this happen mine went at 8,500 miles just as the bike started to engage the starter circuit when pulling in the clutch and cutting all electrics when in neutral. Also the horn stopped working.
Dealer said that they had never heard of wheel bearing failure on the orange ones and Harley would do it under warranty but not the electrical issues as the bike had been serviced elsewhere by a previous owner.
I thought that the bearing issues had been sorted out?
They couldn't find anything wrong with the electrics and the horn was just duff.
This is my first non jap bike and I ride every day will the city X be up to it???????
Boy the Buell parts are expensive in the UK too.

I had mine "upgraded" bearings on the front replaced two weeks ago. They had been on for 18,000 miles. They didn't collapse, but they were loose and had excreted a lot of grease. I was getting my tires changed at an Indy shop so I had to pay for them.

Hmmm. I have 21,300 miles on mine with no problems. Weird...

Anyways, on your electrical issue. What service did the previous owner have done?

Just the 5000 mile one. I suppose they are following the rules as it was not a Harley dealer but it just seems a bit tough.


I have checked through posts in the knowledge base and I think the issue with the electrical could be a bad earth connection for the ECU as I believe it is grounded through one of the two bolts that locate the tail section and I had noticed that these were looking very corroded as they get all of the road muck thrown off of the back wheel and onto them.

if you ride a lot in the wet, you will replace bearings. it is that simple.

Daywalker,they cannot deny a warranty claim because you had routine service done at a non harley shop,if they did some kind of work to the electrical system that would be different story.I would contact Buell customer service.

I had my upgraded orange bearings in the front replaced at the 15K mark, so they probably had better than 11K on them. The tech who did it screwed up, though, so they were replaced again 600 miles later. All under warranty, so no hassles other than time and my having to learn to re-trust the bike. Nothing like odd noises from the front end to make ya' nervous, eh?

Anyway, I'm in FL, and have done more than my fair share of wet riding, so maybe Fullpower is onto something there.

High pressure washers [car wash] will blow water right past the bearing seals. Avoid spraying directly at them..

Over-torqued wheels will crush bearing sleeves and reduce life. Most tyre fitters would be unaware of these and vital belt issues. If you are in the UK, depending on your location there is one independent I would recommend but the best idea would be to look at the UKBEG site for good local information.

All sorted out now the bearings were done under warranty but I had to pay for the horn.

I don't power wash the bike but maybe the previous owner did.

I'm happy again with my Buell : )
