I'm purchasing the Buell race muffler for my '04 XB12S and was wondering what people are doing about the exhaust valve and related gear, cables, Etc.? I'm also installing the race air box and was wondering how to lose all of the junk on top of the stock air box? Any Info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys. | ||

C, I'm sure someone who has done this will pipe up but until then: the race muffler doesn't have the valve and some people remove the valve motor and cable, some don't. If you're talking about putting an open air box then you'll have to remove the motor I belive and either pull the cable or leave it. If you think you'll ever go back to stock leave it other wise pull it. You do realize you have to either go with a race ecm or something to fool the stock ecm into thinking the valve is still there other wise you'll be throwing a code and have the engine light on... I went with one of Odies pipes which still has the valve so I left mine in. I"m going to swiss cheese the stock air box although I haven't done it yet... Hope this helps... Kevin | ||

Thanks Kevin! You answered my question. I AM going with the race ECM, but had seen another poster complain about the "Check Engine" light staying on after removing the servo, cables, Etc., which is exactly what I would like to do. Currently, I'm running my stock box "swiss cheesed". Here's a pic.  | ||

Still waiting for a difinitive answer? I've got an '04 XB12S and am installing a K & N filter with open box, Race muffler and Race ECM. Is it ok to trash the stock exhaust valve hardware? You know, the servo, cables & wires. I'm getting contradicting stories on using the race ECM. Some say it cures the "Check Engine" light when you disconnect, other's say you HAVE to keep it plugged in? Please help? Thanks! CC | ||

CC, I posted on the other thread also but: if you are running the stock ecm without the valve plugged in it will throw a code. if you're running the race ecm it won't throw a code. There isn't even any place to plug the valve in to a race ecm... Thanks for the pics.... Kevin | ||

Chris, When you install the race ecm and exhaust, you can get rid of the servo motor and cable assembly. | ||

Thanks Aeholton, you too Kevin, I was hoping that was the case. There's so little room on that XB12S, I can't even find a spot to locate the Scorpio i500 security system, and the control module is only about the size of a pack of cigarettes. I'm thinking of putting it where the exhaust servo is now. Sorry I'm so totally ignorant. Though I've been biking almost 40 years, this is my first Buell and it's a far shot different than the last Harley I bought new in '71. |
