Ok heres it goes, Past couple of days my bike has been taking more than a couple of pushes of the starter switch to start it. On one occasion just as I got about 20 feet away from my parking space the whole engine just turned off. I stopped to re-start it, and it was fine. Today it seemed as if it did not want to start once I left Best Buy. When I rev the engine it will drop below the 1,00 RPM mark. My bike is an 06, and its got a sliver over 4 grand on it. I use 91 octane fuel, and wait for the little red engine light to go out before igniting it. ?????Any ideas???? (Message edited by vaneo1 on November 19, 2005) |

possibility of loose battery leads, also check the chassis ground end of the battery cable. while you are at it unplug and reconnect every connector you find on the harness. lots of wires, only takes one bad intermittent connection to give you a headache. good luck, dean |

If you've had a big change in temperature or rode at the track try riding at 3200 rpm for 10 minutes. The injection system can act really goofy when it learns during different riding or different conditions and then does not adjust well right away. I've ridden three time for 25 min each and it was still screwed until I took it to 3200 for a ten minute ride, then it started and ran great. |

Spatten, as a matter of fact it was extremely hot out today when I left BB. But that wouldnt expalin why the other morning my bikes engine killed on me, and why it was a hard start that morning. I ttok a short ride and noticed a small lowprofile back fire while comming to a stop in first. Guess I better put the fun on hold and take it into the Harley Dealer. (Damn I hate saying that, ERIK why cant we have a Buell dealer??) |

Mine was doing that and it turned out the stator was toast. Pull your primary chain inspection cover off and take a whiff. If it smells like burnt popcorn, that's it. |

Battery may need a charge or have a weak cell or two. Throw a voltmeter on it... should read 12.8 or above. |

2k4xb12, After yours was doing that was it still able to start occasionally? Or did it just stop starting all together? |

I originally thought mine was a bad battery since it would want to turn over but sometimes it would take a try or two before it would fire. Just sounded tired. I put a meter on it and it read 12.29 volts. During cranking, it would drop to 9.9 volts. Once started, it was only charging at 12.46 - 12.49 volts. Should charge closer to 14 volts. I actually got it into the dealer before it totally left me stranded. It would run, but felt like it was lacking fuel. From the time I started noticing problems, I actually rode it about 100 miles before getting it to the dealer. We had originally thought it was the regulator, and they overnighted one for me, but after installing it, they found the stator fried. I took a look at it and two sections were burned near where the wires enter it. It starts and charges fine now, but I still need to take it back because the idle fluctuates a bit randomly between 1,000 and 1,200. |

interesting, everything sounds all to familiar except the part about the idle flucuation. I notice my idle fluctuates between 800, and 1000 RPM after a cold morning start, once I let it idle for a minute, the RPM stabilizes at a grand. I presume that part to be normal. Tomorrow guess Im going to have to schedule my bike with a date at Bartels HD or Glendale HD. |

I know this might sound off the wall but when was the last time you had your TPS reset? |

I doubt very seriously the Throttle Position would have anything to do with a hard start. It's probably the battery, regulator, or stator. |

Or loose wire, ground or the like... |

Oh yeah, and along with the fluctuation, it seems to idle a bit rougher than usual (vibrates more). |

Last time the TPS was reset was when I took her in for the 1,000 mile service. I skipped the next scheduled service. Bike now has 4,000 miles on it. BTW it started up fine this morning so I cant figure it out, this problem seems to be intermittent. |
