Look closely at the photos I posted and you'll see it hiding on my bench... I'm not saying anything about it till I roll it out to do battle with James and Company =)
Erik's Blast is at a perfect point to start racing. A little more motor (which he has) will go a long way while still being reliable. The belly pan/ground clearance issue is solved by the high pipe he's using. It should do very well!
I'm not going to be doing much of anything to the motor on my Blast, instead I'm going to be focusing on the chassis and making a few tweaks to it. For a long, flowing track like Willow I think it's going to work out nicely. Stay tuned!

You guys heading out to Willow - NOTE: Sunny and I can function as your pit crew!!! Don't let the lack of pit crew hold you up - we've got you covered. This is supposed to be fun and since I'm still financially handicapped - I'm not racing the rest of the year so I'm out there with Sunny helping in the pits so PLAN ON IT - both of you.

couple of things you might not have considered yet - fire extinguisher for your pit (it's required) - and maybe we can lean on Matty and Ernie to pack another of their Glendale sunshades.

Come on out and have fun with us. The coming season is gonna be serious fun!

Fire Extinguisher was next to the tool box at all times, sir!
And there was another GHD/B tent in the back of my truck - we just didn't have any room to pop it up!

The 500 classes are starting to wake up!

Matty,
has anyone tried mounting an oil cooler on the Blast? If I'm thinking right it would give a slight increase in oil capacity. And with you racing the Blast any help in cooling would be a plus I'm thinking.

Matty, Erik and I were talking about that, thinking that It will help keep the bike from overheating on the track. You figure that the bike is basically 90%+ throttle for 14 minutes. I noticed that Jim Cochonas (racer a twin) got rid of his stock Firebolt oil cooler, and replaced it with a high capacity unit. I wonder if he still has his stock one.

Lockhart Phillips has one just like I used to run on my Sportster for $120, and JC whitney has similar stuff for about $50.

Jim likes to spend money =)
The issue isn't with the oil temp, it's with the cylinder head temp. The major factors in controlling that are jetting, compression, ring seal, and timing.
If we had a head temp sensor on one of the bikes, it would be interesting to check the temps without and with an oil cooler to see if it would have any impact on the head temp.

The cooler certainly would help keep the oil temps down and keep it from breaking down as quickly, no arguements there.

Fortunately for Jim, he has the money to spend...

I'm thinking that the oil temp will have a fairly significant effect on cylinder head temp, but like you said, we won't know until we test it. How is cyl head temp checked on the XB's? Is is like the S3 temp sensor? If so, and the sensor is on the front cyl, we could easily hook one up to Erik's bike. We could probably hook up a meter to that and get some readings that would be worthwhile. Maybe it could power a BIG red light that would tell the dumb$hit rider that the bike is about to melt a piston!!

In Karting, DigaTron digital guages are common - and they have a digital readout as well as a dumb shite flashing display with an optional dumb shite light. Head temp sensors are the under plug kind.....

Yeah the XB's check it like the tube FI models.
Saro's kit sounds very nice.
Another option that I was discussing with Will, that they have used in the past, are those handheld laser temp probes. Just zap a consistent location, like a head bolt and there you go. THat would give us all the data we'd need to determine if the cooler worked or not. And we'd get to zap our shoes, and peoples fore heads, and spiders, and ensure our end of day bottle of beer is of the proper temp, and stuff...

Don usually has his laser there at the track too.

Ditto- Thank you for the offer, I'll probably take you up on it in November. I think that I've got a fire extinguisher or two at home. I'll have to check and see if they are still good. They do have an expirition date a presume.

JIm is the cat with the spiffy full fairing XB, a talented GHD/B racer, and fine dude to boot. Now that you know who he is, you can go find him and ask him for all that money. Good luck though, I already tried
Yes, the twin is an M2 and the Blast is in an S1 frame. Next year we'll be saying the twin is the M2, the blast is a blast, the other blast is an S1 with a full fairing, and the other, other blast is an XB frame. And then we'll also have to include Erik's, James', Saro's, Steve's, and Patrick's.
Not too bad of a start.

The fire extinguisher comment was NOT meant to single anybody out - it's just that there's supposed to be one visible for each bike and they'll bring it up a couple times each year. They rarely check but it's a good $25 investment at Costco.

You do need to have a partner in the pits because you will not have time to fix anything if your bike gets bounced in tech the first time through and then you have to head to class. You'll have to leave it with us to fix while you return to class.... so... make sure you've gone over it to make sure everything required is drilled and wired.

Nice that our aircooled bikes are so much simpler to prep than those liquid-cooled types which have to have each hose clamp wired too.

One thing: each nut holding an oil line MUST be secured. Most of us use a glob of RTV silicone - it prevents the nut from backing off and still allows you to take off the fitting if you have to. Much simpler than trying to rig up a way of safety-wiring.

Matty,
I know I mentioned it somewhere else but with the temp issues you mentioned has anyone tried to come up with that combo dipstick oil temp guage yet? If not is there a BADWEB sponsor who might be able to come up with something? The location of the dipstick lends itslf perfectly for this.

Yeah, that one was built by Don and Ernie with help from Will who 1.) came up with the idea, 2.) handles the fabrication of the engine mounts and 3.) machining the cases. That's not to say we can't forget about all the great folks who help with items 4-36!

I'm looking forward to seeing your bike pictured in this section soon!

Matty ran away with the race...
I wish I had the official timing and scoring results from Mylaps.com, but they are not posted yet.

The little Blast was quite quick, running a best 1:48 lap time (average speed 83 mph). I have to give credit to Matty, with the stock suspension, the front end was chattering, but Matty kept riding in his smooth controlled way.

Patrick and Jim were a hoot to watch. It looked like they were connected by a rubber band throughout the race. They battled closely all throughout the race. It looked like a total hoot.

Another Pic of Erik's bike that I am looking forward to racing next month.

Jim on the Buell Blast Racer! Jim's a tall dude, and makes this bike look like a minibike. Jim put together this bike for under $2000. It is almost completely stock with rearsets, an exhaust and numberplates. With the underslung exhaust, it tends to drag the exhaust pipe. Hopefully a new belly pan will help out.

Notice the stock flyscreen.

I'll post more later... Gotta work now.

What exhaust were you running on Erik's bike? I don't see the fancy one-off prototype...

PS) Congrats! Awesome that there were 3 buells in that race! thumbsup

PPS) Nevermind about the exhaust, I see it now.
