The only official word from the factory is that the XB9S will commence shipping in the 4th quarter of calendar year 2002. I did read somewhere though that the first production Lightning has rolled off the assembly line. Talk to your dealer. |

Thanks Blake. I already talked to my dealer and he says that he cannot get that information and that Buell will notify him with a delivery date! I know this may not be true and that he would prefer to sell me a Firebolt already on his floor.(which just may end up happening). I would just buy the firebolt but I am worried about comfort, I will be getting off of a hot rod but comfortable sportster and I dont want to regret the trade. Has anyone installed the handlebar risers from American sportbike on the bolt? If so were they an improvement? |

Your dealer isn't jerking your chain. None of us knows for sure when the first ones will come out. At the dealer meeting they said Nov, I asked if they meant it this time! I'll wait and see. My best guess is that they will be out before the end of the year but that's just a guess, don't hold me to it. It will really piss me off if they release it to all the mags(which is already going on, Cycle World and Motorcyclist)and then not ship me any to sell for another 5 months like they did with the Firebolt. Kind of loses the effect doing it that way. |

Thanks for the input Daves. I am starting to lean towards getting the firebolt. I don t want to get caught waiting around for to long. I am an impatient man. I am ready to get to work on making these new motors run (Nallin). |

AR15, Yeah, buy the XB9R, ride it for a few moths, have it Nallinized, then sell it to me cheap and buy a new XB9S. |

Ar15ls1: I wouldnt worry too much about comfort on the Firebolt. I traded in my 2002 Electra Glide Classic for the Firebolt (mid-life crisis!) and have nothing buy raves for the Bolt. Before the Electra, I had a Dyna T-Sport. The Bolt isnt as "cushy" but any discomfort will be forgoten when your fun-o-meter hits the redline! One test ride is all it took for me. Besides, ASB is working on handlebar risers for the Bolt. That should put it about the same reach as the XB9S and, the Bolt looks 1000% better. IMHO |

AR15lS1, I traded from a 90rwhp Sportster (Custom model) for the FireBolt. The Firebolt in stock trim makes the Sportster feel slow. In all aspects! As far as ergo's, the Firebolt rides just fine! I can ride the 'bolt as far as I could ever ride the Sportster, and the fun meter is a whole lot more. Even with the stock bars, it still offers a more upright sitting position that a lot of the other "sportbikes" I see running around town. I've read that the lower footpeg assemblies from the 9s will bolt on the 9r, and with the risers available from SportTwin?, the ergos would be almost identical to the 9s. Just food for thought. Ok You guys are really starting to pursuade me in to getting the little bolt! I test rode one and it just did not seam as fast as My sportster(Also 90rwhp). I guess it was just the torque difference! Im sure i can get used to the clip on bars especially with the risers. My main purpose for this bike will be performance(and yes I know I could buy a thousand other bikes better suited for this job) I like all of the technology put into the new buells. I even like the modernized sportster mill! If I can make an 883 into a high 11 second bike (after the buell 1200 conversion) I think the bolt will be easy to get some good numbers out of!! |

I think if you like the looks of the "S" you should wait for it to come out, even if it's not until Feb. or March. Your Sporty is a good winter time ride and next July you'll be kicking yourself if you're on a bike you can't fully love. Continue to save your money and buy the bike and speed parts you really want. |

I just want the XB9S to come out so I can get a tail section off of it for my Firebolt and a set of those rider pegs to put on the passenger peg hangers. Maybe that'll help make the ride a bit more comfy for my girlfriend. :-) Bryan |

Ar15ls1, If you shift 'em like a Sporty the 'bolt should feel slow. I know my Sporty (74Hp) pulled a lot better than my S3 (95HP)... until 4000RPM when the Buell flat left the Sporty. Josh |

All of the quarter mile times that I see on the bolt show high 11s to low 12s. This is exactly what my sportster runs. The bolt actually makes more mph. It just did not seem as fast especially riding through traffic and on the bottom end. I only rode the firebolt for about 5 miles though and only got to open it up on a straight road once for about an 1/8 of a mile. I probably need more time on the bike to really get a good feel for it! By the way does anybody want a 2002 883r sportster with buell power!! |

A lot of small differences could be adding-up to make the Sportster "feel" faster; If the Firebolt has a flatter torque-curve, that would make it "feel" slower. On the 'bolt, you have a better view of the road in front of you, so you get less "pucker factor" from the same speed. The riding position on the 'bolt makes the bike easier to control, (it puts your weight in the right place to do some good)(less effort at the same speed), and "leans you into the acceleration" instead of the hanging on to the bars for dear life riding position of a stock Sportser. Or your Sporty might just BE quicker off the bottom, I dunno..... |

Dave, Did they say anything about demos. Are they going to have the XB9S at Biketoberfest in Daytona? Joey, Yes, an 883r with Buell power would be great. But, I'm not planning on acquiring a sportster until next year at the earliest. What have you done to it? Dave Frye |

I used Buell Thunderstorm pistons, cylinders, and Stage1 ported heads by Bill Bishop at hammerheads. He did a great job. The cams are the s/e bolt in ones. The carb is a stock cv that has been rejetted and a neddle change. I use a Force ceramic coated exhaust and a modified s/e air box. With the 883 gearing it is really nasty from redlight to redlight! I really like the bike but I cant resist the new Buells. |

Joey, that's a sweet 883r. It probably has about the same power as my M2. I have the Force exhaust on mine, ported heads, SE bolt in cams, Mikuni 42. It sounds like a very fun bike. For most of the riding I do, that would be more fun than a Lightning. Too bad I'm not in the market yet. Next year hopefully! |

Thanks for the compliments on my sporty. It was a very fun bike, but not as fun as my new firebolt!! I traded the sporty in and bought the bolt for $9500. I really love this bike. It has a lot of potential. The engine is not as torquey(Iguess thats how you spell it) as my sportster but once you are up and running it would leave my sporty standing still. The new engine makes my old motor feel realy tractorish! It may be a old design but it sure is smooth and it likes to rev! Anyone who says its underpowered compared to the old buells is wrong. The bolt already beat my buddys 98 s1. Thanks everyone who help talk me into getting this bike!!!! |
